Turn Your Wii into a DOS Gaming Machine | Nostalgia Nerd

Күн бұрынYou can pick a Wii up for a few dollars/pounds, and instantly put it to use as a fantastic emulation machine. Here I'll be exploring using the Wii as a DOS Gaming machine, to play classics such as Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem, Commander Keen, Monkey Island, Leisure Suit Larry and many many more.
We'll explore installing the Homebrew channel on the Wii, setting up Priiloader, using the Homebrew browser, installing custom forwarders and getting the Wii to autoboot straight into a DOS environment, with it's own menu system, so you can navigate straight to your chosen DOS games. You could even use it to run DOS screensavers if that's your thing.

To clarify, this setup should allow actual mouse support. You can also mount both USB and SD devices, including as a CD.

@@leepshin As far as I can tell, it just does the same as the red one. It's largely cosmetic and purely a joke on the bomb theme. Other than the message (which is probably written to include the exact date and time it's produced) there's no difference in any of the files.

also even if we have a laptop with i7 which plays all dos games without fps issues, still we prefer to install dosbox to a poor wii and use its inconvenient for dos games controller. go figure...

The great thing about wii is that it's got excellent 240p/480i/480p analog output for CRT televisions and even VGA CRT monitors. For emulating vintage hardware on a CRT it's damn near perfect.

As for BootMii, be aware that in older Wiis with a boot1 vulnerability (which was patched in later versions, unfortunately mine, like yours, is patched) it also offers an option to install as boot2, which I absolutely recommend because it’ll protect you from all software bricks, no matter what.

Yep, mine too has been patched, every Wii manufactured after mid 2008 is. Which is sad because this will, as you mentioned, allow you to protect you from all software bricks as installing this as boot 2 will allow it to boot before the Wii menu which means that you can backup EVERYTHING, so you know if you somehow managed to completely corrupt your Wii, as long as you had a backup on your sd card you could just restore that backup and be completely fine.

@@everythingpony The boot 1 vulnerability is a hardware vulnerability it cannot be patched by software updates.

Even if you cannot install as a boot2, as soon as you install BootMii and have access to the Homebrew Channel, use BootMii to backup the entire system NAND to the SD card. Even if the hardware boot fails, you can find another virgin Wii, install the Homebrew Channel on the replacement and restore the backed up NAND, and be back in business.

Yeah, for Doom, you should use an actual Wii port of Doom from the Homebrew Channel browser, rather than the DOS version.

Something important to note with the Wii Homebrew Browser is that you'll need to edit settings.xml on the SD card and change "setting_server" from 0 to 1 to make it use the backup server. The main server will lead to DSI errors and crashes.

This brings me memories... I “hacked” my Wii a couple years before they discontinued online gaming, some channels and the mailing service (which are fortunately replayable thanks to Wiimmfi and RiiConnect24). Still working perfectly...

Great TUT. I got everything I needed to know for modding the wii from this well made, informative, and dare I say entertaining video. Plus gotta love how my man just emulates DOOM on it at the end of the day. Nothing compares to the DOS version honestly though considering all the ports they made of the original were objectively worse.

Ha takes me back. Did this back in the day and used WiiMC for playing video too. It was amazing because it worked over the network and turned the dvd drive into a dvd player. I also installed ScummVM. Worked great on the wii for those classic adventure games. Thinking about it now its amazing how a community can rally round and create such wonders for users like me. I thank all those who made the homebrew software on the wii. It really enhanced the console at the time and is the best free software I've ever encountered on a modded/hacked console.

I have bought (and re-bought) older consoles specifically for the purpose of soft-modding, e.g. 1st gen Xbox, PS2, etc., and now it looks like I'll probably be re-buying the good(?) old Wii to add to the soft-modded console collection. I had a Wii back in 2008, and I probably used it for 3 months before selling it, as I didn't really get into any of the games that were around. It never occurred to me to investigate whether or not it could be soft-modded, so nearly 11 years later, I'm learning new stuff about the Wii.

Hacking Wiis is one of the best things in gaming~ There are better ways to get DOOM running on the Wii though, there's a proper homebrew port of it, so you're better off playing it that way instead of through DOSbox...

The WII uses a Power PC chip so in theory could run Amiga OS 4.1 and thus become a next generation Amiga at a fraction of the price

As does Xbox 360 and to some extent PS3 (cell, which is PowerPC derived). The WiiU uses PowerPC too I think. Nintendo moved to arm for the switch.

Superb Peter. I did have the Homebrew channel years ago when the Wii was current, but an OS update killed it and I’ve never looked to see if it could be got back. My SD card probably still has all the stuff on it from back then! I’ll certainly be giving this a go 👍

I don't recommend using the Homebrew Browser, I'm pretty sure a lot of the programs on there are out of date, & the thing barely works in my experience, much easier to just grab the apps you're after from their original creator & put them on the SD Card yourself.

That was my experience as well. It clearly has not been updated/supported for several years, and most downloads I tried ended up giving me a Screen Of Death. Probably the only reason to grab a Wii U nowadays is that the homebrew scene on Wii U is still heavily supported.

@@notthegoatseguy Hell, even back in the heyday of Wii hacking, the Homebrew Browser was one of the worst ways to get homebrew. Full of bloat, outdated, honestly quite ugly, even back then. You were almost always better off finding the original app, rather than grabbing it from the Homebrew Browser. However, back then, it wasn't nearly as bad, so it was still a recommended thing, as it was still way more convenient to grab an app from the Browser, rather than doing it manually.

Great tutorial! Remember if you have a pre 2008 Wii, it's far better to install BootMii as boot2 rather than an IOS. Provides much more protection.

Wii is a great emulation machine in Europe (and Europe alone as yakns don't have RGB in their TVs) mainly because it's one and only console capable of outputting RGB 240p 60Hz signal onto our CRT TVs.

If you use component you can go up to 480p with the Wii, while using RGB/SCART 480i is the limit. But as far as 240p gaming is concerned there is no difference whatsoever.

Windows 98 can run in DOSBox at a decent speed(at least on my 2009 PC with a 2007 CPU), with 3DFX support too, but maybe that's just ports like the SVN Daum build by ykhwong. But if you meant it runs pretty slow on a Wii, then yes probably, I doubt I would try it.

I modified my Wii years ago, I think it was back in 2007-2008 ish, I was probably one of the first to do this.. I originally chipped the system with a solderless chip called Wasabi, then a old work friend mentioned a soft mod that had just came out online but was only available for the few as it was not common knowledge yet.. I have a version that you can not brick even if you tried "Boot2 version".. I have never tried Dos Box on it.. I know about it.. Emulation is not to bad on the Wii for a low powered system. WAD files are the things like WiiWare and VC games and front loaders etc.. If you try some of the console emulation like NES, Master System and others that have a light gun you can use the Wiimote as a light gun if set up in the emulation..

What a great Video. I modded my Wii U to play Gamecube games off a USB stick. Now I have all the games I want for the Cube without worrying about disc wear laser problems.

Thanks for nice tutorial. Had some problems with IOSes, but installed ciOS and it works perfectly. Playing Commander Keen with ngc controller will be a bizzarre experience.

@@jade_capricorn hateful? Well he's actually right. People today are either in two basic camps: the traditional "there are still only two genders", or the recent "there is a continuous spectrum". Nobody thinks "gender is a thing of the past".

@@Gideon_Judges6 Yes and no, Gender is a relevant topic and the old-school man/woman mentality has to die, but in the case of the gender select screen you could've went the Microsoft way, just customize your Mii without picking a specific side, every option for every Mii

@@Suuhls I don't think that male/female has to die, as that is a biological taxonomy. Probably they should not call this gender, but keep in mind if I were making a Mii and sorting through normal sexual genetic traits, I would expect to find for example facial hair under male. Yes there are some truly chromosomal non-binary sexes, but they are clearly genetic abnormalities and so exceedingly rare as to not invalidate the sexual classification. You're not one of the crazy ones who believes that there are no biological and statistical differences between male and female of the species are you?

Very good video, and quite interesting. I never realized that the Wii had so much flexibility. Kind of makes me wish I had gotten one, and I most likely would have gotten one, had I known its full potential, years ago.

This video reminded me how fast time flies. When we got our Wii I was 11 years old and the only way I remember to hack the Wii was by using the twilight princess exploit- I was way too young back then to understand it so I never bothered again. And now all you have to do is open a letter on the Wii. How times change.

Running DOS on a WII is actually pretty smart, given it's relatively low (~20W on full load) TDP.

2:17 First thing you'll need - A PC, which can do all this DOS emulation far, far better than a Wii. But we're still going to use the Wii instead. Because, reasons. This is such a silly video concept. I love it.

I gave my son a Wii some years ago, but his mother gave it back to me because he played "too much". I set up the Homebrew channel, used a 16gb usb drive for games. Now I'm thinking that I should be able to run DosBox with very little problems. I'll get me a keyboard and rat, and I'll be playing Judgment Rites in no time! Yes, I really do have a copy of JR. A real legit copy. But I never installed or used it. Looks like I will.

WII was ahead of its time .. I remember letter bombing that years ago ... testing the emulators mainly back then the N64 emulator .. such a good little console unfort I dont have it anymore my daughter lent it and sort of claimed it and i moved to Asia and I not seem them here so ... ill just have to get another when i get back to UK!!! good video ...

You totally can! You can run all wii homebrew on it. You can also enable "native" gamecube gaming and with more emulators, you can basically play the entire Nintendo catalog of games. In fact if you really wanted you could run dosbox better because you could overclock it beyond wii specs. The Wii-U is a great, cheap emulator machine.

I had the idea to make a Wii into an emulator just yesterday, great minds think alike. I don't know if it's super important but wii(dot)guide links to a slightly newer Priiloader than the google sites guide does. 3DS and Wii dot guide are worth checking out if you're playing around with these systems.

Oh it is the wii is a emulation machine. There's like 20 emulators it supports, as well as being able to play gamecube and wii backups.
