In the latest episode of our “Barn Find Hunter” series, Tom spends the day at Turner’s Auto Wrecking in Fresno, Calif., where he’s given free rein to explore the 70-acre property’s barns, sheds and hangars and discovers classic ‘60s muscle sedans and wagons, a perfect ’34 Ford, California ’57 Chevy and a 1910 Flanders.

You are spot on about Mr. Turner in the early 80’s I bought a 68 Gt Jr Alfa Romeo and Turner’s had a 69 GTV that I was buying parts when low and behold the car was gone!! The buyer left a business card so I called the number and 40 years later I’m still into Alfa’s and still have the best friendship with the buyer of that Alfa that was turned into a SCCA GT 4 race car that I helped with. Best years of my life for a 22 year old at the time. This episode sure brings back memories of his wrecking yard.

Jerry Turner has hundreds of classic cars and antique motorcycles that have been stashed for decades. Dozens of old Harleys, British bikes, and others. He was a good friend of my dad's.He lost a bunch of beautiful cars and motorcycles to a fire a few years ago. He told the fire dept. "let the house burn, but save those barns!"

Jerry was the nicest guy around. He had ne'er do well employees who he coaxed into being solid citizens. If one got drunk and failed to show up for work, Jerry would sit down the next day and quietly discuss how the ne'er-do-well's mother needed the income and how he needed to sober up and show up for work for the sake of mom. No yelling or screaming (that I ever saw), just quiet compassion for guys who were trying to do better under Jerry's tutelage. each employee was given a stripped down car (no hood, doors, trunklid) with a set of tools to search out the needed parts. I needed a drive shaft bearing for my 61 Cadillace and I remember Jerry telling his boys to fetch a "mid-ship" bearing for a 61. I usually got to ride out with the employee (Jerry kind of liked me). What a trip!

Jerry Turner is one of our elder Indian Motorcycle buddies and came to our annual Indian gatherings every year and even hosted some of them at his Bass Lake get away. He rides a short frame Chief and always wins the slow race at our field events . I enjoyed seeing him in this video and yes he is a very nice fellow.

In regards to the 57 Chevy. You could have gotten a six, a v8 with a two barrel carb, or a v8 with a four barrel carb with dual exhaust which was known as a Power Pac. Then for extra an coast you could order a Chevy with a 245 HP Corvette engine with 2x4s, dual point dist., double diaphragm fuel pump and a stock cam and hydraulic lifters, or a 270 Corvette engine which was the same as the 245 engine except it had solid lifters with a high lift Duntov cam. You could also order a Fuel Injected Corvette engine. At the age of 18 I ordered a Bel-Air with the 245 then a year later installed the Duntov cam which I bought over the counter at the Chevy garage for $25. I paid $250 extra for the 245 engine when ordering the car. Took delivery on 24-May-1957. Sold the vehicle on 19-July 2015. A lot of great memories made in a historical time period.

My dad bought a 48 Jeepster in the 50s and we kept it in the family for 30 years. The flathead 4 was first replaced by a 312 Thunderbird V8, but it was just too much. So in went a 265 Chevy V8, and it was just right! Just as they said it was a great family car, convertible and fun. Notice the step in front of the rear fender, used to jump directly into the back seat. When we got to high school age, my older brother got the Jeepster, but it was OK cause I got the 58 Dodge short bed step side pickup my dad put the 318 V8 in. Had to put a 12" wide x 1/4" thick channel iron bumper on it to hold the rear end down, an epic bumper that got respect from tailgaiters!

Love it! Great series and awesome to see these barn finds. I loveeeed that '57 Chev near the end. Never got the answer if that was for sale or what he was asking for it...a real beaut! . Yes, Mr. Turner sure is a nice man and his prices were more than fair. He's certainly a breath of fresh air and others can learn a thing or two from him. Definitely subscribing to this channel. Even though I am not mechanically inclined, I do appreciate all the fine automobiles of yesteryear. They are beautiful, stylish and certainly made better than the cookie-cutter cars of today. Great video series, I love seeing what he discovers. A small nit - a 352 is not a Y block, it is in the FE family. There was another video where Tom was looking at a Edsel that had a 400 and he made the same mistake. Not a biggy as many confuse the engine families. But Tom, if you read this, please note the difference. The Y blocks started in '54 and ended by '62 or 3. FEs started in '58 and went to '76, with the most famous engines being the 390, 427 side oiler, and 428.

I believe the color was called sierra gold and a power pack 283 was a 4 barrel, dual exhaust and bigger heads indicated by the triangle marking on the end of the head. A two barrel carb was the standard 283. The 2 four barrel motor was rated at 270 HP, the FI was rated at 283 HP. Don't remember the other HP ratings. Nice car and thanks for the memories.

Tom, I know that you're interested in VW's. and Pintos. I had a 1970 Pinto two door and one of the things that I found interesting is the fact that the distributor on the 2.0 LTR was the same as on the VW. When I bought points, rotor and cap, they were the same P/N as the VW. BTW, that engine was VERY strong. Shifted it when it wouldn't go any faster in that gear.
