These Deluxe Mills have long been customer favorites due to their high-quality components and rugged design. The Deluxe Pepper Mills feature a stainless-steel grinder and the Deluxe Salt Mill uses a ceramic grinder. Thanks for the tip at the end about shortening the rod. I was seriously sweating the length and was basing my whole design around that.

I followed the directions. On both the pepper and salt mills, the stock was longer than the square rod by 1/4". Luckily, by using a collet chuck with a 1/4" bolt, I was able to take a 1/4" off the bottom of the tops which made the inside tenons a little longer. I would add a step to check the overall length of your project in relation to the rod length before finishing and assembly.

You didn't mention removing the tenon from the bottom of the body. Probably should be done before mounting on waste block. Great design.

Good observation. While turning the mill body to shape at 6:31 we incorporated the tenon into the shape to maintain our overall length.

Mike: how do u deal with eccentricity on the coupling of the top to bottom pieces? No matter how careful I am in aligning pieces, there is always some run out. When I move the tailstock in and out there can be a problem with slop of 1/10” or more from centerline which does not help. Is there a mandrel similar to pen mandrels but for larger diameter from 1-3” or?

Great video, what did you end up doing with the tenons you cut earlier?

I know this an old video and I'm just starting to turn a mill. The problem I have is I see no instruction as to when to get rid of the tenons you cut as described in the instruction sheet (v 8.16). my guess is that once you drill the holes in both the mill head and mill body you can remove the tenons. Would this be correct. Thanks for the help and support.

Nice and very informative video. Couple of questions about Deft Clear Wood Finish: 1) is it food safe? 2) is it used as a sealer only or can be used a a final coat finish? Are you shipping to Canada? Thanks

I haven't turned salt/pepper mills before and want to make a set as a Christmas gift. To people typically make the salt mill smaller than the pepper? Or is that just personal preference?

It's mostly preference, but keep in mind that we offer more sizes in pepper mills, so that can affect the set as well.

If the body ends up too short, why did you cut the non-threaded end? I would think an easy solution is to cut the top to size and rethreat using the appropriate die?

Most turners don't have the correct die, so we showed the easiest method.
