Today I am sharing how I flipped a 90's style orange armoire into a folk art inspired storage cabinet. I've been wanting a piece like this for years but they are upwards of thousands of dollars. Watch as i strip, refinishing and paint the details of this hutch to match the laundry room design we are currently working on.

It might need a clear wax and then a bit of brown wax in the details... ( adds a bit of age and enhances the carving) but I also think it might be the colors. The colors in the folk art painting on the beams might work better. I understand his inspiration and really appreciate how he dives in and goes for it!

especially because acrylic paint is not sun/exposure proof and will change color or fade over time. the cheaper the acrylic the faster sometimes the color even breaks off it is technically liquid plastic so it makes sense.

So, a few naysayers here. Now it's my turn : IT WAS FREE....and the style fits the space. Since it will be seen through the kitchen, I do agree that a white wash followed by a darker wax or stain will provide some finishing that it seems some folks are missing. Personally I was missing the slightest touch of yellow and red....somewhere. Also add some towel racks/holders to the sides and it will be perfect !

I get the look you're going for and I like it better sanded - distressed looking. But I agree that some wax needs to added - especially since it's near the washer. The wax will help prevent the raw wood from getting too much moisture. You might want to make sure the bottom on the floor is sealed too - just in case.

Love the hutch. After I had kids we lived in Tustin. They went to Tustin school district and I worked as an aide for 7 years. In pta all my kids life. I did all the costumes and stage craft for years. Taught kids to sew on buttons and paint and learned to use compound miter saw and more! Myself I kind of like the hutch as is or would have scuff sanded a bit and added a darker gel stain to take down the orange yellow color.

What threw me off initially, was the fact that the wood is so much lighter grain than almost everything else in your home up until now. The folk art painting really works for me in this case. it suits the area and is almost whimsical. I mean, let’s face it four dollars plus the cost of the oven cleaner is not a bad price no matter how you look at it. well done.

I’m painting a table my grandfather built in the early 1900s. Very basic, two shelf half moon with three legs. He made it from pieces of leftover wood and it’s been painted a few times. I’m doing it in green, but will paint designs on edges and maybe do a rub on stencil. Thanks for the inspiration. All edges are flat. When it broke, it pulled the edge from one shelf, but I’ll glue it, fill in as needed and sand. It’s rustic anyway. I just couldn’t get rid of it. My friend is going to put it together for me after it’s done. It’s in 5 pieces which makes for easy repair, painting etc.

See your new piece as a tribute to your trip here ❤️ If you come again you have two places you should go. ”Dalarna” where you would find the most beautiful traditions of wood working, crafting etc. A style you would love to incorporate into your home. Secondly you should go to ”Österlen” being a famous area of the southest part of Sweden. More of a mediterranean vibe… more bohemic, crafty, artistic and rustic. ❤️❤️❤️😍

I remember in the late 1980s, both Lowes and Home Depot stores carried raw-pine, "French-style," Mexican-made TV armoires. That piece reminds me of those (I'm talking "before" stage). Now...well, you've transformed that cabinet into a cool "European antique" wardrobe! I love that folk art vibe, and it looks perfect with the era of your home. I have repurposed TV armoires, too, and I like to cut foam board to size and cover it with beautiful fabric to cover the hole in the back, placing it inside the cabinet. Usually friction between the wood and fabric hold the board in place (it's a snug fit), and the shelves do the rest. Can't wait to see how everything comes together. You're the master of turning chicken scratch into chicken salad!

It is so beautiful with its new lease on life and definitely needs a protective coat especially for a piece that will be in a wet room. I saw someone recommending wax to further age it. But I’m not sure about wax in a humid environment. Maybe, and if so, clear wax first and then a darker wax for more character. Kacha on KZfaq is the Queen of adding character to furniture with paint and wax.

To your question about what the style of furniture this piece is, in the early 90's, there were a slew of furniture stores in L.A. that turned out this heavy pine stuff. Just when I think, Drew has lost his mind on this one and this won’t look as beautiful as the rest of his decor in his home, you prove me wrong!! I never know where your going with certain pieces, lol. This came out absolutely beautiful and I love all the little paint touches you did on it! ❤ You have such a way of looking at pieces and knowing how to make them work for you! You’re truly an inspiration to all of us! 💕

Hi Drew Hey Annie Sloan makes a clear wax for chalk paint that would be so Gorgeous On this cabinet! You put it on with a brush and wipe off wit a dust free rag It will protect the furniture and really Makes a great difference on the beauty of the wood.😃 Love the chest!

I had never heard of using oven cleaner as a finish remover, brilliant! You and Justin are so much braver than I would have been in painting this piece, love the finished outcome and how you had this vision for its beautiful look.

Yeah, I think MaCenna used it also. The thing you have to be mindful of is removing all the cleaner really well because it could continue to seep into the wood and really damage it. That's why Drew and Justin made a point of rinsing it off after stripping the finish.

I just love the folk art look of this cabinet. Knocking back the paint with a light sanding and adding the dot details really brought this home. Are you planning on adding any shelves to the inside where the tv was formerly housed?

The hutch looks to have a Dutch influence in both shape and the carved details

Was trying to figure it out myself but it does have an Amish look to it but by adding on the paint and the next layer it will become more Spanish looking but it's a great find and it will need a little more tweeking to get his vibe for surely your input is similar to my own .

I would say it is a piece from the late 80s or early 90s. Very nice and well kept. Lovely 👌

17:19 I absolutely love it! So much character! Laundry sucks, you might as well have something in the laundry room that makes you happy! Great job!

This goes so well with the tiles. It may also be the only time I've seen distressing I like. I think you have to really know wood and paint before you can get distressing right.

I must admit I love it--and it's nothing I would ever have thought of doing. It looks as if it's been hanging around a hacienda for a couple of centuries.

Love that you are repurposing the TV cabinet that were in almost every home in the 90s & 00s. Put some shelfs inside and boom! nice storage.
