One of my favourite ways to turn a slimline pen! Turning them like this gives a unique profile and they're easy and fun to make - there's just a few things you need to keep in mind.
In this video I cover the basics you need to know about how to turn these great looking alternatives to the traditional slimline pen. I didn't include all the boring details on turning, sanding, finish, etc... but you'll see the steps required to make a pen like the one in the thumbnail.
The great thing about this is that you can still play with the profile. Create something of your own!

I guarantee you and I are not alone in having a messy workshop after massive projects! I have since moved into leatherworking, as you’ll see in my newest channel content. This has reduced the size of messes I make now, mostly confined to a single workbench which can be cleaned up in under 30 minutes most of the time!

My workbench is always a mess but I know what’s what I’m eventually going to get shelves so I can organize everything.

Thanks Robert! You totally should. Look up Don Ward - he's the father of modified slimlines and has a book with various other options for making this type of pen more interesting.

Mike, that was awesome. You know where you can start cleaning? My garage! Love it. I really enjoy how you approach an idea and aren't afraid to jump back and restart again. That's a difficult task when you've already put the work in and some will finish it and shrug it off. Stopping, straightening out the ship and not giving up or allowing it to crash into the rocks is a skill some never find. Really loved the feel of this video, the music, the presentation.

Thanks Rob! Before I can hit your garage I've got the rest of my shop and now my office to clean up first, lol. I used to think "oh, well... I'll get right the next time!" but found out there was rarely a next time - so now when I have an issue with something I'm creating I fix it right then and there. Works best for me and I don't have a pile of half made projects that need to be completed or fixed!

I’m new to pen turning. So I appreciated the show and tell on the modified slimline. I am not a fan of the hourglass shaped pens just yet. So, I see this as something I will certainly do. Thanks for taking the time sir.

Thanks Tracy - I don't remember exactly where I picked up the process on this one or I would have stated it in the video, but I can't take full credit for the process... I learned it from someone! I do love the outcome though - they're a great looking pen and I've been picking up some pointers on my posts on other social media so will probably revisit this one down the road with a couple of updates.

I realize this is an older video but wanted to comment on your great ideal...myself new to pen turning am already tired of the "slimline classic" and I have several kits still in their bags of them. Definitely going to try this out. Subscribed, I hope you're still active on here.

The modified slimlines got me back to liking this kit again and I still order a few every now and then. Hope you're able to follow the flow in the video! I have some new content coming very soon 👍

Great pen, it looked really good when done, but would it be possible for you to put stills up at the end of the video? I've seen other people do that, and it makes it easier to get a closer look at it.

Great idea, I've moved away from the slimlines as I don't like the custom refills or the way you get to them.

Thanks Paul, what do you mean by "custom refills"? The slimlines that I get are all Cross refills available at any stationary store.
