In this weeks episode, I end my two month long Hiatus and get back into deer mode. I check a few cards that I have put out in the last few weeks, and I actually make a new food plot. I dive into the process, and what I chose to do in order to keep this plot cost efficient, but still productive for the deer to utilize this fall.

Ethan, where have you been son? That pull behind mower was a first for me. It got the job done. 😂

Great to see you back out in the woods! I think the main reason you were not seeing deer on the one side of the farm vs the other is the AG. Here in NJ, once those beans get that height, they HAMMER them. Yes, deer will eat the corn but if they have a choice, they will go to beans all summer. There is a massive swing on our farm when there is 30ac of beans vs 30ac of corn next to the house
@ethan_stubbs
@ethan_stubbs 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm sure that's what it was. There is a pretty decent mixture of corn and soybeans throughout the entire farm. I'm sure during the season the deer will migrate back towards the bigger timber for security. Thanks for watching!

I found and followed you thru BW channel. Always looked forward to you updates and struggles last year. Permission farmers are more relatable to many public guys out here. I live in ND fortunately over many years I have gained and lost many properties par for the course rite. Never been one to be married to any one property for this reason. Kayak bow hunting river bottom is by far my favorite way to bow hunt giant upper Midwest bucks before early ice up

Permission farms are my go-to for the time being. I have a very high priority of buying a property someday, but I’m currently in the process of saving and trying to find the right piece. I am definitely going to try a canoe hunt on this piece this season! Thanks for watching, I appreciate the support!

I gotta be honest from what I've learned food plotting for a while now especially if I'm going for best yeild and least money is plant late summer like after Aug 15th and before labor day most of your competition from weeds in gone you don't need to waste money on herbicide after it's established because most of the weeds have ran their course for the year as long as you get some rain or have a way to do some watering this works way better imo
@ethan_stubbs
@ethan_stubbs 2 ай бұрын
That’s a great idea. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll have any way to water a plot in the terrain that I hunt. Over the past 3 years it seems that we have gotten several good rains during the 3rd week of July. That’s what I’m going to aim for to plant these brassicas.

Should be interesting to see if the side of the farm where you saw the most buck activity remains that way as the deer change their range going into fall. My guess is that rut funnels downwind of where does are bedded would be where the bucks will be in the fall so this might change the buck activity. While there were a lot of doe photos, there may not be as many individual does as the photos show. It could be a lot of the same does with multiple photos. It was great to see where you are in your discovery process. Looking forward to seeing more.

I’m sure there’s probably 3-4 local does that are frequenting that area throughout different parts of the day. My initial thought was hunting that field in the rut due to the higher doe density, but I would imagine that after the crops are harvested, the deer will transition into the timbered areas looking for additional cover.

Ethan i’m really looking forward to follow you this season. Just want to maybe let you know something about spraying. This is something i learned by failure. Be very careful spraying a freshly cut field. Plants go into a very hardy regrowth period after being cut. In many cases weeds can survive a GLY spray because they are in overdrive trying to grow back what you cut. If this happens and the weeds survive the spray they have a high chance to become GLY tolerant and won’t be able to be killed by GLY. Next time i would advise waiting a week or two before burning it off with GLY. Maybe if you notice certain plants surviving you can make a “hot” batch of spray with a back pack sprayer and burn those plants off. Or use a different chemical like 2,4d or butyrac those 2 will kill broadleafs only. Clethodim will kill grass only but mix with crop oil so it binds to the plant. Hope this helps buddy! Good luck this season.

Thanks for the solid advice. This was really helpful. After the first spray, I did get a really good kill. I wish I would have mixed some sort of a residual in with the spray. One of my good friends is an agronomist, so I’m sure he would have had some sort of recipe I could have put together. I visited the plot a few days ago and it is still primarily dead. I will spray it with 2 4D or GLY once more before tillage.

@ethan_stubbs 2 4 D will leave a residual in the soil and may affect what your planning on planting

@@ethan_stubbs i never heard that before about 2,4-D being an issue post spraying as it is considered a post emergent spray and not a pre emergent spray. But maybe look into it some more. Not saying he’s wrong i just never heard that before. You might wanna use a surfactant with 2,4-D as well should you decide to. Like i said though you also can just respray GLY or there’s always butyrac.

Hey man big fan of your videos, just a tip I have once you mow you'll get a better and quicker kill if you wait a week after bush hogging. The plants go into a mode I guess you call it once they're in trauma and don't take in the chemical like they would if they weren't cut prior to spraying. But just a thing that helps me man. Killer content goodluck this fall.

Thanks for the advice! I went in the next day and sprayed and got a really good kill. I wish I would have added a residual to what we sprayed, so I may have to touch it up once again before we till it to plant. I’m thinking brassicas in that plot.
