End-of-Steam locomotive servicing is featured at Denver's Rice Yard on the C&S Ry Northern Division HO scale model railroad. Engine number 6308 arrives at 5:23 am and needs to be serviced -- "turned" -- before it can depart with its next train. The Engine Foreman walks us through the action as he readies the 2-10-2 steamer for train No. 41, departing at 9:20 am.
See how animation and sound effects make the Engine Foreman job popular with regular operating crews. Action includes the animated coaling station from the July 2004 issue of Model Railroader magazine.
See the C&S Northern Division website for track diagrams, photos, and more: csrailway.com/

Excellent camera placement. Obviously a lot of thought and planning went into visualizing this outstanding presentation. I like how you introduced the yard paperwork into the proceedings, a nice touch of realism. Very enjoyable and satisfying to watch and hear

Very well done video and I agree with everything you said about the locomotive and other subjects. I had the Bachmann J3 on pre-order for around a year and a half and when it finally arrived I was hoping it would look good and work well. As a New York Central fan who considers the NYC Hudson the most well proportioned, and beautiful steam locomotes ever built I couldn't be happier with the model. As demonstrated in this video it is a real puller with sufficient detail to satisfy most modelers and great sound. Bachmann outdid themselves with the J3, and I hope all their future steam releases will measure up to this one.

Nicely done. Having been born and raised in Denver and a frequent visitor to Rice Yard and 7th St Roundhouse and shops during the later steam era, it was very refreshing to see an excellent model work that for some of us, brings back great memories of when that area was a real railroad. It was very interesting to have seen most of what was there at the time and those experiences have not been forgotten. Thanks for the memories!

Thank you! I was not in Denver in 1958, but I'm very happy to hear that the modeling rings true to you. That's the ultimate compliment for an eyewitness to offer. My thanks go to all those that were here back then -- and photographed and filmed what they saw. And to the publishers and museums that have made that information available.

Tender got water twice? Once going in and again heading out?
@CSRYfan
@CSRYfan Жыл бұрын
Yep. No telling how long the engine would be simmering in the roundhouse in case they found something wrong. It was easier to fill it from the water spout. And if the turnaround was quick, the fill was shorter for outbound servicing.

Is the rice yard coaling tower built from drawings or just guesstimated? I've wanted to build a model of it for a while and was wondering if drawings may be available somewhere
@CSRYfan
@CSRYfan 8 ай бұрын
The RY Coaling Tower was guestimated from photos, on-site foundation measurements, and an 8x11" 1948 C&S Ry drawing of basic measurements I found at the Colorado RR Museum. My July 2004 Model Railroader article describes how I built the animated model, and includes the scale drawings I created. This iconic structure is in a ton of locomotive photos from the 1950s, so no depiction of Rice Yard is complete without it. It was well worth the effort!

@@CSRYfan awesome! July 2004, gonna have to pick that one up. I've always been more of a UP guy and I'm still learning all the sources for Q/C&S reference material. I have a 902 just begging to be photographed and this scene seemed perfect. photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-mKp9JS3/3/O/i-mKp9JS3.jpg

Yep, that's a famous (among C&S fans) photo by M. C. Trent. No. 902 is under the coaling tower on the night of November 21, 1958. This photo was used on the album cover of "All Steamed Up".
