Turning a Taper using the Monarch Taper Attachment Part 1

This is a two part series about the use of the taper attachment on the Monarch lathe. John Saunders of NYC CNC asked me if I'd be interested in making a custom tapered mandrel for him which turned out to be a great job to show and talk about tapers and using the taper attachment on the lathe.
In this first video i go over the taper attachment on my Monarch lathe, and then I get it set and indicated to the required .900" taper per foot.
I also start the machining of the mandrel in the Victor lathe getting one end turned and the centers drilled.
Be sure to check out John's channel! / saunixcomp

You have no idea how much help and inspiration you have been. This week I bought a small engine lathe to start building stuff that I want to play with. It is a rockwell 10”, 25-700 lathe. It came with the cross slide attachment and the gearboxes to cut threads. Needless to say this video helped in a big way of understanding the cross slide. Your tool grinding videos have been a great tool as well. Just wanted to say Thank You.

OK, this taper attachment looks very robust and simple, but only for single angles. Keith Fenner's contour attachment is more complicated, hydraulic driven, but can make all kinds of angles, dangles and radii in one shot.
@Abom79
@Abom79 7 жыл бұрын
+rkoz55 His is a tracer attachment, it works differently for different types of jobs. Taper attachments are for one angle at a time, like when machining prop shafts and pump shafts.

Once again you have explained another machine/machining topic in an excellent manner. The fact that you mentioned taking up the backlash before measuring (or starting a cut obviously) should tell everyone that you have cut many a taper on the lathe. The TA on the Monarch is the cats ass. Roller bearings and the gear rack for adjustmenting the bar is so much better than what most older lathes have. This wouldn't apply for your Monarch BUT for folks like me, with lesser quality lathes, it is extremely important to use A LOT of oil on the TA and lathe. I would use a synthetic motor oil on the TA AFTER giving it a thorough cleaning and regular way oil on the lathe. I have an Sheldon from 1954 and it came with the telescopic TA somewhat similar to yours however without rollers etc. Sometimes, depending on the taper, it seems to work best to run the taper from headstock to tailstock. It seems easier to get the backlash out?? Any idea why this may be?
@Abom79
@Abom79 7 жыл бұрын
+howardtoob Thanks for the comments. I have never had problems with the Monarch TA's unlike the other styles. I agree, use plenty of lube! I don't I have ever cut with it from left to right. I need to get into my cross slide and see what's going on in there.

Nice procedure for setting up for taper turning. The use of the indicators would work with other types of tapers as well. Great teaching content!!! But then, I've always found good teaching content in your videos. Thanks for the straight forward show and tell. About magnifiers, I use one of those that straps on your head. Believe it or not, the Harbor Freight ones do a really good job and have three levels of magnification built in, and they are cheap! Well worth the investment and probably one of the best deals at HF. Around $5.00 and sometimes on sale. Even if you don't like it, it's cheap.

Sure! www.harborfreight.com/magnifier-head-strap-with-lights-38896.html 1.8x, 2.3x, 3.7x, 4.8x If you need more than 4.8x all the time this may not do it for you, but for the things I do this works very well, for me anyway. As far as I'm concerned, this may be one of the best kept secrets at HF. BTW, if you use the lights on it, that will take a little getting used to as I usually open the battery compartment instead of turning the light on. Just turn th lights on before you strap it to your head. Still not going to complain about it for the cost.

I had to cut a 1:12 taper on a couple of 8" stainless rudder stocks. Fortunately, the lathe had a Z axis readout so I used a good dial indicator run 10 inches along the parallel section of the shaft I had cleaned up and dialed in the taper setting. I checked it the same way when I was done and the taper was within 2 tenths per side over 10 inches. You need to make sure the indicator is positioned at the same height as the the cutting tool to check the taper or it wont give you an accurate reading.

if you have a v-block or other of known length that can be be laid right on way and understood to be repeatably / reliably parallel to way, can be more accurately used for a checking block in any case.

Keith Rucker recently talked about the taper attachment in his LeBlond restoration part 13 video. Maybe you can add a link in the description for people that want to see a bit more on that. Also, you mentioned that you needed to put a very small center drill on one side. Why not leave some extra metal and part it off later? Edit: I think I see why, since you wouldn't have a good way to hold it while parting it off.

just watched part 2. some play in the taper attachment required you to pull the tail stock to go past to above steps in the park. is the swivel channel worn , the sliding block worn.. i can see some screws in the exposed top .. is the side spring loaded to adjust tension in the groove like a gib to remove play.. just curious.. i know you may only use it rarely but a hour or two now to locate any play might save hours later when you are rushed for a taper. happy new year to you also. wish i was east coast to enjoy some of those pork roasts you showed earlier. i was just laughing to myself thinking about the issues trying to UPS a freshly cooked pork roast. every drug sniffing dog along the way would nose it out for inspection. let alone for the driver at my end. i know it would not be a toss and dash.. it would be a knock and can i have some please.. wayne in lost angles..

Noob question: why didn’t you start by machining the tip first with the work chucked deep into the headstock and use a live center with an inverted tip for the rest of the taper?

Good question and I haven't seen it before that I can recall. On Keith's lathe anyway I was thinking his taper is a separate cross slide and hydraulically controlled on the far side. More properly a contour follower, you drop in the contour you want and the wrong side of the lathe cuts it out. At 19:38 I can see one knob pulled out and turned so it stays out but I think there may be two half nut 'pullers' engaged to pull and lock the half nuts apart on the cross slide? Didn't know those were even there so you know that's just a wild guess on my part. Nice eye for detail there, that dial is NOT turning and the tread pitch would be quite a load without half nuts in there.

Thanks Adam, what amazes me is that a machinist that is making precision parts would take so little care of such a precision, very expensive machine and not treat it with kid gloves and abuse it when he or she is trying to make a living with it and risk losing it's ability to make precision parts, blows my mind. I realize that accidents do happen, but looking at the cross slide on your Monarch looks like someone beat the living tar out of it, not saying it was your family. Happy New Year Adam.
