Sam turns a small container for holding toothpicks. He uses a method that does not require a tenon for chucking the box.

Excellent video, many thanks. This is about my third time of watching, as I want to make a couple today, but putting needles and threads in them for emergency sewing kits. While I was watching I noticed how many little tips you threw in there, and for me as a new turner that’s absolutely brilliant.

Great video. The shellac you mentioned, is it your own special formula? Do you do one on one teaching?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 10 жыл бұрын
Terry, That shellac is from Blonde Shellac flakes. i also use the cans right off the shelf. I do classes in my shop and they are usually with one or two people. I would be happy to have you come by. You can look on my website-- wyomingwoodturner com for details and cost. Sam
@PaulLockwood
@PaulLockwood 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam. Your Shellac in here is it just a normal blonde shellac flakes mix? I've used it a few times on pine but sort of in a french polishing way of rubbing it in, oil and toping up for about 10 coats. I know some use it as Shine Juice but always looking for different finishes.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 7 жыл бұрын
Yes it is blonde shellac. I often use an oil over the shellac as well. Sam
@PaulLockwood
@PaulLockwood 7 жыл бұрын
That's interesting to use the oil over the top as people usually use the oil to penetrate the wood. I will have to check out your finish videos again listening better to take it all in.

@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 6 жыл бұрын
I do not have a video on making the saw blade tool. Just grind it to the shape you want. The hard part, perhaps, is making a handle and attaching it. The jaws are small pin jaws. Sam

About 14 minutes in you mention using a twist drill bit since we can't see the bottom what is the advantage of a twist bit over a brad point bit? Or a fostner bit?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 5 жыл бұрын
Along with other turners, I feel the twist drill is they best drill for drilling end grain. I do use forestner bits or brad point bits. But I find the forestner bits dull too easily. Sam

This might be a silly question but does a higher number sandpaper make a shinier and more defined finish
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 8 жыл бұрын
+GradeCUnderC Well, the way sandpaper is "graded" in to coarse to fine grits is maybe backwards. A very coarse grit might be 60. That would be very coarse to start with. Then grits go up to 12,000. I have a set of very fine grits that go up that high. So working from a place where you can remove the visable scrates then proceed to a much finer grit will real make the surface look polished. Sam

I actually made a couple of these a few years ago. I don't think I will do a vid on making a cigar case. It is pretty much like the toothpick holder only larger. Plus I would have to buy a cigar to use as measurement for making it. I must stay clear of cigars: Cause I like to smoke 'em Sam
