Some just have different levels of manganese. Put them on the roof in constant sunlight. That's what I do. Love the vids. Cheers brother, Mark from Australia.

I use a germicidal bulb to start the process then outside in the Arizona sun

Here in Australia most clear glass 1900-1920era will turn dark amethyst in 1-5 years depending on how much manganese is in the glass, sauce/pickle and Codd bottles seems to go dark quickly here, I just leave mine on the corrugated iron shed roof and the Uv from the sun does the job.

you should reconsider artificially irradiating glass. i have been digging/collecting since 69 and i can instantly tell you which bots are natural sca or not. artificial color will also decrease the bots value. you perfectly explained why its not working for you when you said its been months. it takes years to get light sca and decades to get dark sca. a good way i've found is a bottle tree in full sun. you still get to enjoy them as they take time to turn. also the deeper shades are acquired in bots that contain the most manganese. you can tell with a blacklight the ones that glow brightest green. i hope some of this helps....patience :)

I wish I could show you a bunch and see if you get it right about sun purpled vs artificial purpled.

@@swbottles it's easy. sca is amethyst color and the other is purple with a slight tint of blue. side by side is very obvious.

You can use germicidal bulbs but it's kind of complicated for me to explain how I figured out how to get them the darkest. Try to find someone that has an autoclave that's large enough to fit a bunch of bottles you know the sterilizing machine for medical equipment

Way out there thought, what about a tanning bed?? Probably would cost a fortune to leave it on for a week though

I've heard that some plants that radiate food..will sometimes allow people to send a pallet through at a cost

Scott, I have the same issue with wanting my bottles have a little more purple. I do keep them near a window, but would be concerned putting them in a microwave to heat up. The ones we dug are treasures to me and I would be sick if something happened to them. I hope you get some great feedback back. 👍👏😀

Dependent on manganese content and time in the sun. High manganese content can turn within just a few years I always lay my manganese glass on a large mirror in direct sunlight on the roof of my shed I have done an experiment through the years and the glass on the mirror has turned quicker than the ones just setting in direct sunlight

You need to use UVC light for the natural purpling effect. The darkness or lightens is determined by the amount of manganese in the glass if there's not much manganese it will never get dark no matter how long you leave it in the sun or under UVC light. As far as the Cobalt 60 irradiating your best bet would be considering trying to get a job at one of those places that processed food using Cobalt 60 it happens quick so put your boxes on the line and run them through and you will achieve your goal before they have time to fire you LOL

sun colored amethyst glass is dependent on manganese, too little, very pale a lot, almost roes color 18803 and 90s stuff.

I tried a ketchup bottle in a microwave. It turned the color you want. Don't put one in that is cracked. I did it a minute at a time. 3 minutes in total.

I would think it would heat up so fast that the bottle would break.

Does it turn dark or lighter purple due to the amount of manganese in the glass? darker equals more and lighter equals less? or is it just time and amount of UV and they all will get really dark given enough time and UV

Takes me 3 weeks with a uvc bulb. The light touching the bots so the heat speeds it up so a month should be just right

Thats odd, the guy who dose the irradiating for me swears that heat turns bottles back to clear. He says to put out the too dark bottles in the summer sun for a couple weeks to lighten the color. I've done it and the heat made them lighter.

For me they seemed to work faster if the light was near touching compared to them a few inches away! I just assumed it was because they got warm. I hate the light because of the ozone it emits I got really sick around that time but it could of been something else.

But the heat I have seen to make them clear is almost melting the bottle to turn it back clear! I think that's why the bottles that sit on the Desert floor seem to get darker.
