Join me on a journey as I finally complete a long forgotten project: a 1975 Seiko Diamatic - 7006-6020. After encountering a setback with a misplaced upper balance shock spring, I temporarily set it aside, and sadly forgot about it for quite a while. But fate intervened, and now, fueled by a sudden recollection and a surge of enthusiasm, I'm ready to breathe life back into this vintage gem. Witness the magic unfold as we bring this timepiece back to its former glory.

I have that same watch, it's become very rare. It was my first and most difficult vintage watch i've done yet. I have it on a medium brown leather racer style strap and it's gorgeous. One of my favorite watches.

@@WeekendWatchRepair Yeah, I lucked out as my chapter ring and dial are about 95%, maybe 99% on the chapter ring. There's two lume pips missing from the dial but the lume is dead on the thing anyways and there's a nice patina on the dial that's barely noticeable. Wha ti'm jealous of is the hands on your example. the hands on mine look mostly ok but it's definitely the weakest link on the total package. I also polished mine's case so all the surfaces are pretty shiny and it looks just beautiful. I actually wasn't ever really sure what the original finish the case was supposed to be it's so hard to find an untouched example picture.

As I watched your video, I realized that how you work on watches and how you shoot your work led me to thinking of you as “Marshall II”. Really enjoyed your narration and the length is just right.

Thanks a bunch. I'm not trying to copy Marshall. I'm wanting to do my own thing, but there is only a few ways to record a watch repair up close! I believe he once said that he took Mark Lovick's courses starting out. I did the same thing, so we both learned a lot of the same techniques from the same instructor. I greatly appreciate the comment and consider it high praise.

I'm a recent subscriber and so far I like what I see. And since you asked, I'll add my 2 cents worth regarding the videos. Personally, I like to see the 3D aspect of the movement, which can be seen using a camera angle of 45 degrees (or less), as opposed to the 2D directly overhead shot. Keep up the good work!

@WeekendWatchRepair

It's a handy little technique. Even if it doesn't get all of them, it will usually get most of the pivots aligned. Just make sure that you do not hold your movement tight. Let it bounce around a little bit as you are tapping it. Thanks for watching!

I personally enjoy log form video content, at least with restorations. Reviews and buyers' guides work better as short form, but restorations really need space to breathe. And you needn't apologize for your videography skills, as that continues to develop and improve as you go. Keep doing what you're doing, and you'll find your "sweet spot."
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair Жыл бұрын
That is a really great point. There was so much more information that I wanted to provide through the narration on this video, but I just couldn't get it in. One example is that there is a neat trick on these movements with regards to the barrel. This watch got a full replacement barrel complete (because the original was in such bad shape), but the original part number is very difficult to find online. There is another Seiko part with the exact same barrel dimensions, barrel tooth count, spring, arbor, etc., with the only different being the shape of the very tips of the barrel teeth. They are just slightly more rounded on the other part (for a different movement), but the tips actually do not engage with the second wheel at all when they interact, so it is a perfectly suitable replacement part that works flawlessly. I wanted to get into those details, but there just wasn't time. I really appreciate your thoughts on the long form vs short form content, and will take it to heart moving forward.

@@WeekendWatchRepair I think you're on the right track with editing down some of the repetitive stuff like screw insertion and lubrication. Showing us a couple of each spaced throughout the rebuild gives us a sense of continuity without having to witness every single screw go in or every single pivot and jewel get lubricated. It's like watching a movie: if you see someone get into a car in one location and see them exit in another, the brain can fill in that there was a drive in between the two events without having to witness the entire 9½ hour trip from El Paso to Dallas . Of course, anything of special note with either of these things ought to be documented, such as similar but slightly different screws being easily confused or special techniques applicable to a particular movement. But overall, I feel like you're finding your footing and will continue to improve.

Can you give details about the barrel swap. It may be a lifesaver for someone in future. Part numbers and caliber no would be great. As to the length of video, I prefer longer, more detailed videos. Some channels just cut too much making it very hard to follow the strip down or rebuild or both. 45 mins is a minimum for both and around an hour is ideal. Best regards.....

Great video, the length of the video is not a problem. What type of cristal do you use when you have to replace it on a vintage Seiko 5 models, NOS or you find by size mineral or sapphire cristal? Thanks
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair Жыл бұрын
Thanks a bunch, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It depends on the specific watch on whether I try to find a NOS, replacement sapphire, etc. Mostly with these vintage watches, I'll try to find a NOS factory part first. Many of these, including this particular watch, have tension rings, etc. and aftermarket options are limited. Thankfully, with Seiko watches at least, there is generally a few options available for NOS replacement crystals.

Im gonna toss out a guess on what the watch he was talking about is..... Vulcain cricket. (Which i hope it is since i just got one that need a lot of tlc)
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair Жыл бұрын
Haha!! Interesting guess, but no that's not it. I'd really like to work on one of those some day, but I don't have one personally at this time. I'll say that finding reference material on this watch is proving difficult, and I may just have to end up figuring it out as I get into it. I'd really like to find some sort of walkthrough or servicing guide beforehand, but it just may not be possible. I have a 7002 and a 6309 Seiko diver in my possession that both belong to a friend of mine that he's wanting to get a bunch of work done on. They were on eBay and ended up not being as advertised (big surprise!). I can make a video on one of those in the meantime if necessary. It's my backup plan in the event that don't start on this next watch soon.

Is it possible to fix loose rotor somehow on this type of movement? Thanks
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair Жыл бұрын
The easiest fix would be to just replace the rotor for one with that has a good bearing. If you can find Seiko part # 500904, that should be correct. Several other 7000 series movements share this same part number as well. As far as tightening the bearing, I'd assume it could be tightened back up with a staking set, although I haven't done one of this type specifically, where the screw is part of the bearing itself.
