This movie actually made me cry a lot. I'm American (not Canadian) and not asian like the main character. But she and her friends are VERY accurate to real gurls in the 2000's especially. And the way I used to think of my mother as my best friend when I was young, and the way my mother was also overbearing to the extreme like the mother in this, hit very close to my heart. But unfortunately I didnt get to have a talk with my mother that resulted in us coming to a balance and maintaining our relationship. Who I was as a person ended up disgusting my mother so much the older I got that she disowned me and now I never know where she is at any given time. I feel like this movie may have helped us if I had it when I was younger. Because even though I've moved on and I'm 25 now, the little girl in me misses her momma.

I feel like as a child it is easy to say you won't raise your kid the same way you were, but harder to actually follow through. Ming is far from perfect but she is also dealing with a teenager that USED to be easy. Not rebellious, polite, filial, completely well-mannered, etc. Within a span of a month she did full 180 and wasn't her mini-me. She doesn't see the harm because Mei was able to adapt be perfect and was amazing. I feel like it is more about the directors experience as a first- generation immigrant in a Western country than just mom-daughter issues. Your parents want the best for you and don't see benefit in "outside" things. You can be like Meilin and stand firm and find a balance with Ming or be like Ming who buried most of her true self to reach non-confrontational balance with her mom. She kept the boyfriend but let everything else go.

ALSO, speaking of periods, if anyone here has a daughter, it is important to introduce girls to the idea of periods and consent as early as age 8. PLEASE.

As someone who was a preteen/teen girl in the 2000s/early 2010s, this movie is pretty accurate lol. Middle school/early high school is when girls start getting major crushes on boys and not knowing how to control their emotions, they act very cringey and do embarrassing things with their friends. You should see the fanfics I wrote at that age 😂

The theory on why the mum was so big was because by the time her panda came out she had accumulated alot of rage and negative feelings as she was growing up where as mie actually enjoyed and had a relatively good relationship with her mum and enjoyed her life

She kept the panda because it showed her that she didn't have do be this aspect of mei that her mother and other mother's created. She wanted it because it helped foster a healthier relationship with herself. It may have had good and bad outcomes but mei understood that her panda was apart of her identity. The film is about generational trauma passed down to women and it explains why ming wasn't a great mother. Ming resented her mother but never wanted to break her connection nor disappoint her, so she kept her distance to avoid the reality that is their lack of healthy love; it's why she was ginormous, she represented the 2nd generation, at least the one that is between traditional and contemporary. She is caight in the middle and it's why she was so broken and emotional in the end. Although it is interesting how y'all viewed the panda, I could definitely see some dependency issues with the panda as an alter ego/escape.

I truly love the recent pattern of movies about intergenerational trauma in immigrant and refugee families, and how our parents might hurt us out of love and their own fear, and how we can heal and move forward. And I definitely love how this movie captures being a second-generation Asian immigrant in a North American country, and being a child/pre-teen/young teen in that era and all the awkwardness and "cringe" and uncertainty that entailed. I also truly love how puberty and periods are becoming more normalized in our culture, rather than being yet another way to shame people and make them feel disgusting for natural things. What I love is that this movie so clearly shows that there was no one right way to be and no one choice that was empowering for everyone. The best choice for Mei to be true to herself was to keep the panda, but the best choice for Ming to be true to herself was to transform it, because they were both very different people with very different pandas. For Mei, her panda was a source of happiness and expression and fun and authenticity, but for Ming, her panda was a source of trauma and pain and made her LESS authentically herself and who she wanted to be. And I'm so glad the moral of the story wasn't that "they all just needed to learn to love and accept their pandas and let them out." Because while that was demonstrably the right choice for Mei, it was demonstrably the wrong choice for Ming. Even Sun Yee presented all of them with the choice, and behaved lovingly towards all of them, whatever they chose, without judgement or disappointment - she held the portal letting them transform their pandas if they wanted to, and flew with Mei when Mei chose to keep hers - she helped ALL of them in their choices. And what I love is that Ming DID learn to love her panda, when she was able to take the choice to transform her panda into something that couldn't hurt or traumatize her anymore, so she got to be herself and love on her panda in the tamogotchi. It doesn't make Ming fake or wrong or "not accepting/loving herself" or not being authentic, and I'm so happy that both choices were presented as equally valid and empowering when they truly were made as each individual's CHOICE, and not forced or expected. Ming's first panda transformation, when she locked it away as a child, was suppression due to her mother's expectations, but after she healed from her trauma she was able to transform her panda the second time into something she could acknowledge and love. Keeping the panda out wasn't the right choice for her to be able to love it, transforming it in a non-suppressive way was how she could be her authentic self and love her tamogotchi-panda, and that's okay. It's so important to me that this movie shows that making the empowering choices that are true to yourself and allow you to be your true self may be opposite choices to the people around you, including the people you love. By the very end, both Mei and Ming respect each other's choices, are not judgemental or disappointed, and recognize that their way wasn't the only right one. The right choice for one person may be completely opposite from LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE and that is okay, and making the "expected" or "societally approved" choice doesn't mean you are any less authentically yourself than the person who is breaking the mold, if that choice is truly authentic to you.

It's not that she 'needs' the panda to be popular or to be strong or anything. Many children grow up having to hide who they are or supress their talents or interests because their parents don't approve of them - a famous example in media being a kid who wants to be a musician but their parents think it's a waste of time and force them to study instead. The panda is essentially that, a part of Mei that she embraces and wants to express freely, and her family disapprove because they don't understand it themselves. By the end they accept that it's her choice and let her live her life how she wants.

Oh, here's a movie suggestion for you gents: Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Fair warning, it is gloriously absurd. As for Ming's panda being so damned huge, keep in mind that she was also a painfully repressed person. Her anger, individuality, sadness, all of that? She repressed it. She purged her panda because, despite all the pressure she felt from her own mother, she still loved her mother. She blamed herself and her panda for physically lashing out, for giving her mother that permanent scar on her eyebrow. She got rid of the panda to make controlling herself, forcing herself to comply with her mother's wishes easier. Unfortunately, people have a nasty tendency to repeat the past without even trying to. My old man once bragged about taking a two-by-four (a hefty wooden board) to his father, and I personally saw my older brother knock our old man on his ass. Some people just don't learn, or learn the wrong lessons. Patterns of abuse tend to get passed down from one generation to the next. It sucks, it's the wrong way to do things, it damages ourselves and the people we care about; and those that do it don't even realize what they are doing.

This movie, actually, displeys a tipical asian mumzilla (no offence, they are heroic women, trying their Best to make a better future for their kids). Wery common in Japan, China and Korea - since there, if you want a good job, you need a good school, if you want a good school - you want a good kindergarden... And you need to work yourself REALLY HARD!!!! And yeah, family is a very big thing there.

I think this ups the ante and the standard for other animated movies to follow. Whip smart, brilliantly funny with killer lines, beautifully warm and human friendships without being saccharine or twee, poignant and really beautiful. It's ridiculously good. I've heard rumours of a sequel to this. I'm in two minds about that, because this hit such a high standard, I'm worried a sequel will be disappointing and take away from the legacy of this movie. At the same time, if they can apply the same excellence, I would love to see a continuation of this story. ☺
