I remember my first flatbed load and I had a split axle. No one told me about any of this stuff. Well I did a sharp back and the trailer started it twist. Yea, I'll never forget that

4:05 I love how he uses the term “bending” for tires and then turns sharp. I love spread axles, especially how the axles are apart and use the term “spread” and the lack of steering on the tires, therefore causing wear during sharp turns. Specifically, I love it when the tires drag during such turns, despite the quick wear.

I drove a 53' spread axle around downtown Chicago. It was actually kinda fun. At one point the street I turned onto was so short from one end to the other, I had to move into the crosswalk infront of me to get my trailer out of the road behind me. I'll never drive dry van, never have never will. Flatbed is way better, going into construction sites and down into gold and copper mines. My best friend hauls toilet paper in a dry van, I always give him crap, literally.

Good explanation on why you have to drive spreads differently than a normal tandem. If I can add another reason to avoid sharp turns with a flat bed.... When the truck is almost 90* to the trailer the 5th wheels natural movement will allow the front of the trailer to flex side to side. if the trailer is heavy it can flex so much that it will pinch down on the tractor tires and stop movement or worse the load can shift.

That's why I suggest putting a lift axle on any spread axle, if you own the trailer and it doesn't have one, if your pulling a company trailer, just make sure you're careful ..

Hence the reason after listening to many other's; Rather than getting a spread, on my new trailer. I had a life axle installed at the legal distant's from my tandems. Yes it added more weight, but then in addition to being able to axle on the various scale and not get a ticket, nor any of the exsesive tire ware or replacement when those on a spread are destroyed as they are in various turn's. It was cheaper to add the lift axle, and the saving well made up for the additional weight. The combination of having a tandem and utilizing the lift axle, allowed me to scale 99% of my loads.

Not only tire damage, but over stressing the suspension framework as well. I had a seven foot spread on a 45' chip van that I was running, and it had been repaired after another driver had broken the frame by doing 90* turns in the yard, loaded! You just can't do that with a spread axel. Always, always survey your situation before you get into it! Just like pulling doubles, don't commit yourself before you know what you are getting into, then act accordingly!

No choice some places i really struggle backing. Almost all of our trailers the outside and inside of the tires are very worn because of this

the axles are further up on the trlr and close together allowing them to follow the truck easier. I love them when I was in Iraq. 120,000 lb water tanker turn on a dime with no issues. Wish we had them here in North America

I am surprised they haven't outlawed spread trailers by now in the USA. They were outlawed in Australia over 20 years ago because they caused too much road damage as they screwed around corners and tore up the bitumen especially on hot days. Authorities allowed the same axle weights on closed axle as they did with spread axles and people switched over so as to greatly reduce tire wear & save costs.

I only pulled spread axle for 3 months... that's what I remember about it....

It's inevitable that you are going to be making left and right hand turns often in intersections if you are going to get anywhere. If your trailer cannot make these turns with the axles down, then it's time to spec out a different trailer. You have to be able to pick up and deliver where there is a divided highway and you might have to make a left or right hand turn onto a secondary divided highway or even a rural road loaded, and you had better be able to navigate those turns without bending the rims or blowing out tires or tearing the retread off the tires. However I would never run retread or recapped tires on a spread axle trailer. Every so often move the front trailer tires to back and the back to the front to get more even trailer tire wear as the front trailer tires will wear faster because they shoulder more weight and drag more often.

My fellow trucker pulls a 48 ft flatbed and he got loaded in Free port Copper mine in AZ . they did not load him right because they are used to your spred axle trailers so when he got to the scale 70 miles away he was 1000 over on his tandem. He argued up and down that he would not slide his tandems all the way to the back of the trailer and not get a ticket for a bridge law violation going to CT. after much jawing with him and his dispatcher he went along with the program and slid his tandem all the way back. He only had 30k on his drive and 11600 on his steer and claimed it would not do him any good if he slid his 5th wheel. His length from the kingpin to his rear tandem axle was 41 feet. Do you think he will have any trouble?

Can I ask what the benefits are toba spread other than the more weight on the back axle? Do they ride smoother, it can't only be that it's cooler...
@BigRigTalk
@BigRigTalk 12 жыл бұрын
when you say container trlr is it a normal tandem?? or a full spread?? The spread on the trlr in the video is a very large spread and when you turn to sharp the trlr wants to turn on the rear axle, dragging the front axle causing the tire to bend. On a small spread you get the same effect but only when loaded heavy. On a normal tandem it's minimal unless your real heavy. Real sharp turns on any trlr is bad for the tires but spread axles are the worst.

Just a suggestion, if you were to do this on gravel you would see the tires dragging in the gravel and it would leave an impression and then you would be more obvious to people watching You can see what you are talking about in your video but i know from experience pulling a tri-axle lowbed you really see it on gravel and the marks it leaves..

Flat beds have a 10 ft split means they can have up to 20000lbs over each axle where with tandems its 34000lbs so we can haul more legally flat bed can haul up to 48000lbs where reefer is some where around 43000

If you lifted the last axle when running empty the trailer would follow the truck much better, you'd also have less tire wear and risk of puncture. You could also empty the air bellows without lifting the axle for increased maneuverability when loaded.

I driven them alot them video is very informative. One thing I do not like to do is over jacking the truck past 90 degrees even in a regular van trailer defeats the point of doing that because you do alot of damage that way. When I was new I would get close to the job site and talk to a construction Foreman or who ever I was delivering too that way I was 100% sure how to enter and leave these sites. It's not always easy too to set your self up to pull in or out too! Just comes with trial and error. Experience is your friend we all started somewhere. Any time you back these up crank the wheel really hard them stop and see where the trailer is then make some turning adjustments to the wheel. If you have to pull up a million times theres no harm in that. I never try to one shot anything. Anytime you dont hit any thing and get the trailer in there then that was a successful back maneuver. Good luck you will be fine

Regulations, costs (manufacturing, parts, repairs and maintenance,) driver education, just to name a few reasons why these systems are not implemented in the US as over seas. I for one would like tires on certain trailers to be active turn, just for the better turning of the trailer following a wider path than currently, and to help those who can not back up if their life depended on it but also to assist in backing up in limited spaces with minimal clearance.

Seeing as there is a max load limite to the tires, when loaded it would be stupid to dump air in an axle thus putting excess weight on the other tires causing them to blow and go flat and now they need to be changed out. That is why you do not see lift axles on two axle trailers, but you will find on other multi axle trailers, spread or not.
