You don't want to mix sawdust and wood chips into plant soil. It leeches all the nitrogen as it decays. Put a few inches of it at the bottom of whatever you're filling with soil (I like to add a little organic fertilizer that comes with healthy bacteria and fungi that helps to decompose it), then add whatever soil you're using, with any organic material in it already composted, plus a few earthworms. Your plants will do great and the following year the sawdust and chips will have mostly decomposed. Whatever hasn't goes in the bottom of next year's planters.

Sawdust, chips, rotting grass clippings and "chicken poo" is what I shoveled out of our fenced chicken yard - 5 full wheelbarrows full. (4 years worth of chicken poo)! It yielded approx 100+ square feet. I spread that with the old 4-tine hand cultivator. Tilled it into the soil a couple of times, and ended up with about 4 or 5 inches of new top soil. Next time I'll try your method. Because I certainly need, more, More, MORE ! I have 4 more gardens to amend ! Can't wait to plant !

I did this last summer with 40 yards of compost and a dozen large bags of perlite. Next time try a backhoe or excavator instead of trying to scoop and drop, at least for the first bit. In less than 5 minutes, probably 2 minutes, I had a 20 yard pile ready to fill some raised beds. Just use the bucket and dipper to stir the pile like you would a cup of coffee. It works surprisingly well and quickly.

Ok, so I think she was thinking of vermiculite when she said it was a mined volcanic rock. Perlite is in fact volcanic glass that is superheated until it pops like popcorn, making it much less dense and lighter as a result. The advantage of perlite over pea gravel or something similar is that the lightness makes soil compaction less likely.

Hi Emerald and the person behind the camera, since you are using nematodes another great thing to add to your production might be a worm farm. Properly setup it can produce a liquid that is the perfect food for lawns, gardens and growing beds. A friend started small and over a few years filled his garage with a system that produces 20 gallons a day. He used it on his dry barren lawn and it now looks lush and has survived severe winter weather. He also bottles the liquid to sell. It can be mixed with water and sprayed. Commercial product is available and can cost a bit. Of course the alternative is to become a reseller of such products helping to expand and supplement your business. Anyway glad the weather is warmer for you, and nice to see you enjoying the sun, and you are correct seaweed is good for humans.🙂🌻🌻

Little suggestion: (If you have the space), pull the compost away from the back wall of the bin 6 or so feet, back drag it to make a flat even area of compost at a consistent depth, then spread the amendments across the whole top as even as you can, then start pushing it back bucket by bucket, lifting the bucket up high and shake the bucket as you dump it. It will be more evenly mixed by the time it is against the back wall of the bin. I too mix hundreds of yards of sand and road salt in the winter, and loam compost mix for starting new lawns in spring and summer. Have fun!!👍

Great information ladies. I live in north central Washington state 60 miles from the Canadian line. Bought a house in town but the soil is Rocky have several raised garden beds and if close I would purchase bulk of the soil. Also we have very little hardwoods here and I do woodworking so your hardwood would be. Remodeling a 1920s house. Very expensive as the closet is California or shipped here. Does rain much here as this is the east side of the cascades. 10000s acres of apples, pears and soft fruits. Every thing is harvested green for shipping, no tast.

Look up "Coot's mix" and Clackamas Coot. That guy can teach anyone to make better organic soil, and where to source amendments so you pay less for shipping. He also teaches people to farm their own worms for compost and worm castings. Properly fed worms make such good castings that you don't need much else, it's all in the poo. Plus awesome bonus dog paw squeez'ins. Don't forget, that bonemeal ads calcium too which, like for human skeletons, ads strength to structure (blades, stems, roots). Calcium also helps control dandelions (they don't like to grow is calcium rich soil). Calcium also pulls the winter salt from sidewalks, driveways and streets down to the hard clay layer where it's flushed out into streams and diluted to tolerable levels
