I travel to a volcanic desert in Utah to collect volcanic glass (obsidian) and then learn the stone age of knapping to turn into single molecule thin blades and use them to construct a primitive bladed weapon! This begins my latest series where I will be exploring making weapons from scratch, starting from the stone age and working my way up to modern weaponry.

Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

Oh yeah, youtube, wouldn't want to show people how to make a gun from absolute scratch. You never know when some crazy person will have hundreds of hours on hand to mine the metals, isolate the chemicals for gunpowder, and make and test it all until it actually works safely and properly. Much safer that they just buy one the normal way.

Marc, right? Usually, they're more like pipe-cannons, just really simple versions of muzzle-loaders that are fuse or electronic-match triggered, and take hours or days to make even very simple versions. And often they're almost as dangerous being _behind_ the barrel!

pulpnonfiction, that's all a gun really is. A metal barrel that can contain and direct an explosion used to propel a projectile. Literally all you need is a metal tube and an ignition source.

@MajoraZ 6 жыл бұрын
+christian mccualey: The Aztec's fall has little to do with their use of obsidian weapons over metal ones. The Spanish only actually had much initial military success against smaller towns and villages in Mexico/Guatamala. The first actually decently sized state (not tribe: the region's settlements were predominately urban cities with populations in the tens of thousands that had actual state goverments with courts, civil offices, and organized armies) the Spanish got into battle with, Tlaxcala (which was a confederacy of mainly 4 city-states that ruled via a collective senate), where the Tlaxcala beat them, even though the Spanish had already allied with the Totonac city of Cempoala and had a Totonac army helping them. The Tlaxcala decide to spare the Spanish at the last minute, and ally with them: Tlaxcala had been suffering due to wars of attrition and blockades by the Aztecs for decades, and saw an opportunity. Even this combined Spanish, Totonac, Tlaxcala and Otomi (I'm not clear on the details but they picked up some otomi soldiers as well) force are badly beaten and driven out of the Aztec captial with major losses, it is only after smallpox strikes, crlipping the Aztec captial, that the Spanish are able to flip many other Aztec cities, eventually getting a combined army of over 200,000 native soldiers, launch a long siege against the starving and sick capital that it falls; and it takes the Spanish over 200 years, while still relying on native armies, and while native states continue to suffer over Black Death level population losses, to fully conquer the region. The Spanish were able to win because the entire region was inflicted with the deadliest case of epidemics in history due to exposure to European diseases, and because that, combined with the existing geopolitical situation, allowed the Spanish to enlist hundreds of thousands of native troops to help them (who were often manipulating the spanish as much if not more then the Spanish manipulated them) to topple the Aztecs and then conquer other city-states, kingdoms, and empires around the region as they were sick and dying of said diseases. The Spanish's use of calvary, firearms, and steel weapons and armor was a factor, but it was a relatively small one, and was only able to prove useful after having native allies allowed them to negate the absolutely massive gap in numbers and logistics they had vs native states, Even with guns, horses, and steel armor, 800 Spaniards couldn't and weren't able to beat, say, a native army of 20,000 soldiers with more primitive weapons. I'd even question calling their weapons primitive: These weren't simple clubs and such: These were designed, manufactured weapons that often were quite expensive and laberous to make: They had varities of swords, knives, maces, clubs, spears, other polearms, and various projectile weapons. Likewise, these weren't bands of warriors just fighting in individual combat, these were trained armies with a chain of command, formal ranks, and that wore armor, fought in formation, and used stuff like flags, standards, and drums to coordinate troop movement and relay orders from commanding officiers. Their lack of use of metal weapons has more to do with geographic and cultural factors then a lack of ability as well: Mesoamerican cultures actually had rather extensive metallurgical practices, having fairly complex methods for smelting and alloying gold, silver, copper, tin, and bronze, and used it for a variety of religious, ceremonial, and domestic objects: They just didn't use it for weapons or armor. Consider that they didn't have horses, so all supplies and weapons must be carried on military campaigns by hand: Heavy, hard to replace or repair metal tools would be logistically disadvantageous; and furthermore metal was seen as a holy, religious material: It was wasteful to use it on a tool that would get damaged: This is why most of their metallurgy advancements were used to produce alloys of different colors, sheens, and tones when struck/janglees rather then for mechanical properties. Lastly, the climate was ill suited to metal armor: Even many of the Spanish that had metal plate armor chose to abandon it for native armor as a result of the heat and humidity.

sharpbluntobject hmm yeah. Doesn't wood shrink after seasoning? Which would mean a tighter fit with the obsidian
@gramursowanfaborden5820
@gramursowanfaborden5820 6 жыл бұрын
depends on the wood and how it's seasoned, but wood gets less flexible and more capable to hold weight, you want seasoned wood for hammers, buildings, and anything that needs to be stable. if it dries too fast, it'll split, and it will definitely split if left to dry around a chunk of rock that's been shoved into it.

The name of the update is the slashing and bashing update 1.15 where theres obsidian weapons now and theres a new thing called "daggers". You can make a diamond dagger with a diamond in the mid and put a stick on the bottom to make a diamond dagger! But it does 6 damage but its cheaper than a diamond sword. And theres a new enchantment called bleed which goes up to 5 levels. Bleed is poison but less letal but the max bleed enchantment is like the poison effect 5% faster than the poison 2 effect. Thats just the snapshot so theres more coming out soon

+How To Make Everything if you look at Aztec obsidian blades, they are very, very smooth, straight edged, and consistent in shape, vs your irregular, jagged edges and random shapes., additionally If you look up the surviving Aztec wooden drum we have, the relief work on the drum and the pattern carved into them are super fine in detail and artistry as well: I suspect you, in addition to being inexperienced making the blades, isn't using them to carve wood the same way. I don't know how the Aztecs used woodworking, but for metal, stone, and jade jewelry, they mainly only used obsidian blades to outline/mark where they wanted to carve, and then used abrasives, much like the sandpaper wheel you eventually used here, to actually cut into the metal or stone to make the pattern or design they wanted. I suspect it was similar for wood.

The scary thing about obsidian bladed weapons is that they were intended to break chips off in the target on impact. They were often used for draw cuts, where the blade makes contact and is dragged across the target like a saw. This cuts deeper and breaks chips of obsidian off in the target. As the target would move around, the obsidian chips in it's body would continue to cut into their flesh as they try to fight back.

The hide glue is still in use for the manufacture of musical instruments, it's particularly useful as it can be dissassembled with steam and fresh hot hide glue will reactivate and adhere to old glue which makes repairs and adjustments much easier.

I'm not sure if you know this now, but most of primitive technology wood was usually pre-shaped while still "green"/"wet". While knapped stone and glass are very weak against dry wood, green wood can often be easily shaped with stone tools that aren't even very sharp, but need to be heavy enough. It's less finesse and more grind, but it works. I know that from making wooden bows - while you need to finish the bow after the wood is seasoned, you are best off debarking and pre-shaping it while it's freshly cut, the wetter the better. Hope this helps for next time :D

I was recommended this video by a steel forging video and shamefully assumed from the previous video that you proposed to forge obsidian. Completely coming here to watch and say to you it can't be done. But by watching this video fully and re-reading the title. I am pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it. I would even try to attempt a similar project myself. You've earned a like from me.

Knapping obsidian will make a fresh edge, it is the sharpest object known to man, it is so sharp, but be careful, some prices in Utah can leave you with a felony charge if you take it. I have survived 3 months in the middle of Utah where there is nothing because of the help of obsidian. You can find blue, red, green, gold, clear, and other obsidian where you went. It is very useful in surgeries

Have you considered soaking the wood? Then dry it over a fire, after it's split. Or else maybe make an axe before this obsidian blade? Or use two smaller pieces of wood, bound together around obsidian that is sharp on 2 sides? Or use 2 smaller pieces of wood, with obsidian sharpened on only one side, with an extra twig between the dull edges of the 2 rows of obsidian?

Sci-fi and fantasy often depict obsidian as being a lot harder than it actually is. With the Aztec macuahuitl weapon, having the blade made of lots of smaller obsidian edges made sense because if one or two of them broke, they could simply be replaced without replacing the entire sword; this is also because it is almost impossible to create one long blade with obsidian, because it is so brittle to begin with (which would also make a sword made entirely of obsidian a bad idea, seeing as it would just shatter when put to use. However, a wooden club or mace with obsidian edges sticking out of it seems to be an interesting idea.
