Twenty four years ago Turok Dinosaur Hunter released for the Nintendo 64 and became an instant hit. This prehistoric retro fps dazzled gamers with its open, explorable environments, hard hitting weapons and fearsome dinosaur foes. While Turok 2 and Turok 3 kept the series relevant it was the lukewarm reception of Turok Evolution and Turok 2008 that caused the series to become dormant. Now, by way of Nightdive Studios, Turok Remaster has come to introduce a whole new generation to everyones favorite dinosaur hunter. Is this Boomer shooter still worth playing today? Or should this N64 retro shooter stay extinct? Find out in this Turok Review.

The fast movement was awesome! For tight spaces you could press the d pad to toggle Walk/Run.. Mostly in those portal bonus areas

Turok scared me as an 8 year old. The monster screams in the distance always had me ducking for cover despite the face they were just part of the soundtrack. I continued to go back and play it as I got older and really love it. I should check out the remaster some time, thanks for the review!

I played this game as a child on the N64, and I still play it regularly to this day. On both Xbox One and my N64 (If there's a console I will never stop playing, its my N64. I love that thing to death. I keep all my N64 cartridges and memory packs in their original boxes WITH the game manual.)

I really missed the fog during the t-rex fight. How it emerged out of the darkness really made the boss memorable for me. It also forced you to close in and actually expose yourself to danger to hit him. Also, nobody ever mentions his AI in that fight, how he will crawl after you if you try to hide from him in the little nooks. There is also the one shot mechanic of the tek bow using normal arrows, where if you draw it for like 1.5 seconds, it will flash, if you then loose it kills damn near anything in one arrow.

Pro-tip to make the platforming easier: open the map. You can use the maps top down view to help judge distances

NICE!! This game was the first FPS i ever played when i was a kid, and replaying this nightdive remaster a couple years ago is what got me into boomer shooters today!

@@KIRKCOLLECTS I think that having to rely on the knife in the hardest difficulty was done on purpose since there's a secret ability with the knife that most people never notice, you can one hit enemies if you knife them perfectly on the back like in dark souls, the illustration on the cover fighting with only the knife hints at this in my opinion

As a child, there were three FPS games that I played constantly. They were Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, DOOM 64, and Halo: Combat Evolved. I still enjoy playing these games on the original hardware (I have never gotten rid of, or stopped using any of my consoles. I have my original Xbox and my N64 hooked up in my room, and all the other consoles hooked up in the living room)

I miss the time when games used fog to cover unrendered areas. Sometime in mid-2000s most devs collectively decided that it's better to use ugly placeholders that visibly snap into proper models as you approach them. I always found that jarring. Fog at least added some atmosphere.

it made horror games really creepy too 😂. even this game creeped me out as a kid cause i never knew what was gonna come out of the fog/shadows. i feel like after GTA3 came out every studio wanted to have huge far draw distance style games but early 2000s rockstar was a skill level above 90% of industry and many games did what you said and made ugly pop ins etc.

I had a chat about this back in 2006 with a game design teacher, developers collectively decided around the time the Xbox, PS2 and Dreamcast were in development alongside the arrival of 64-bit PCs allowing for greater memory capacity than 4GBs that systems were powerful enough to do away with fog and try and push render distances as far as possible. This was never a decision made by corporate parent companies, these guys legit do not have a single clue about how stuff gets done nor have they ever suggested such things, devs just show off what they can do and get a "oooh that would sell" in response. Devs liked to experiment a lot in that time to see what they could get away with. In the 90s you really had two choices ... fog or blurry textures. You had to compromise; Suddenly they were given options and decided it is better to fake realism than to use fog and because render windows were still small at the time, no one would notice from a distance the low resolution models in the distance. This worked on consoles because they still rendered at TV resolutions - consoles included, I think the max resolution of the Xbox was 720p but upscaled, so it was blurry. Problem is we've now reached a stage in technology where screen resolutions are high enough that you notice low res background models, the snapping system doesn't work anymore, which is why there was a massive sudden jump in system requirements and games shooting up to taking up 80+GBs all of a sudden from 2018 onwards, it isn't because games are unoptimized, it is because of 4K. The problem is you need to redesign the game entirely for the old smoke and mirror systems to be active in the game for lower end systems, they just don't bother, so instead rely on scaling tech from graphics cards to do the heavy lifting instead.

I love this game. I had all of the Turok games for the N64, they were some of my favorite games on the console. I have played through both of Nightdive's ports of Turok and Turok 2 and had a blast with them.

This was my first FPS I ever played, I’ll never forget getting a n64 for Christmas and having this game never beat it as a kid but came back as a young adult and found everything I still play it till this day so much fun and absolute classic and that first level soundtrack is ingrained in my mind

@ 16:10: On the N64, you could switch out the type of ammo by pressing up on the d-pad, there probably is a hot-key for this on the remastered version.

The only Turok game I ever played was Turok Evolution on the GameCube. Still have some nostalgia for that game I’m currently going back and playing old school shooters and I’m on NightDive’s own Quake remaster. Knowing they remastered the first two Turok games is a sign that I should pick up these two remasters as well

The triangle thingies are Talismans. xD Also with the Bows, if you hold the charge for a second until you see a tiny yellow gleam come off of the arrowhead, it will fire at maximum possible damage for both arrow types. Loved the vid! Turok 3 got announced recently! Get hyped!

Just finished Quake 2 remaster recently and loved every minute. Now I can't get enough 90's remasters. Turok 2 was my entry to the series and really impressed me back in the late 90's. Need to add this to my collection. Top review!

So.... 1997, When I was just a 14 year old kid, I found a game magazine at the market sale, and inside it had a 20 page strategy guide for TUROK: The Dinosaur Hunter on this new console called the N64, Wooooaaaahhhh!!!!! I bought the magazine just because it looked super cool... These new screenshot graphics looked so amazing, crystal clear and full of detail, fully 3 dimensional geometric landscapes with hybrid Dinosaurs, temples and huge guns... I was totally obsessed!!! I must have read this guide front to back like 50 times, dreaming of the day when I would get my hands on an N64 and this crazy looking game... hahaha My only experince of FPS up until then was DOOM and QUAKE on my friends PC, this was just the way it was back then... when I finally got my hands on an N64 months and months later, suffice to say I was blown away!!!! WHAT AN EPIC ADVENTURE!!!!!!!! Sadly TUROK was overshadowed somewhat by Goldeneye and other big Nintendo hitters, but The Dinosaur Hunter always had a special place in my heart, especially due to that long long wait to get my hands on it!!

Im honestly so tired of people feeling like they have to spoil story points on reviews. Unless youve got something interesting to say or interpret a twist, a book report isnt necessary or interesting. Im beginning to think people do this to pad their video length. As for the game itself, my journey started in early 2000s with Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. It scared the everliving shit out of me, but I loved it. I've only played the first installment after the HD remaster, but it didn't quite 'get' me like Seed of Evil did.

I played Turok 2 Remaster for the first time a few years back, on the Switch in fact! I really liked it too, I was surprised at the shift in structure but thought it felt appropriate. Plus the gore is so over the top. My only issue was I kept getting lost lol

My parents bought this the year it released. My siblings and I always got so frustrated with all the jumping challenges and the timed trial, but I loved this game, I played it all the time just because I liked the scenery and atmosphere of the game, then we got the ultimate cheat codes and it was game over, I must have played it everyday for a year after that, just running through levels exploring to my hearts content.

I downloaded this the other day, since I didnt know it was remastered and rereleased (im not a heavy gamer like I used to be). It did bring back nostalgia for me, but you can really see the difference in the AI between todays modern games, as opposed to back then. IMO, Turok was almost the beginning of how FPS shooters ought to be. Granted, I did grow a little bored just here and there, primarily in the catacomb level, but the level designs (most of it anyways) and the enemies that come at you (I wouldnt say in swarms but at least a few at a time from all directions), and the large choice of weapons kept me interested enough to keep going to play it all the way through. I do wish there were some actual story line elements added into the game so you know why youre doing what youre doing, because lets face it, the majority who played this game back in the 90s never knew Turok was a comic book character (neither did I). I would honestly say if you never played it, go check it out. Its not impressive by todays standards, but it was impressive back in the 90s

Little tip for those that want to play the game, in order to get WAY more use out the bow's normal arrows, if you hold down the button to fire it, you'll see a small white spark from the arrow tip. This INSTANT kills most enemies in the game. You'll be entirely vulnerable during the chargeup, but it's great for hiding behind a corner and peeking an enemy to insta-kill them to save other ammo types.

I played the original N64 version of this classic, and to be frank to was one of the most rewarding, and revolutionary to its FPS genre. There was a brand new action/ adventure inspiration feel to its visual concept, in an area when crude octagonal pixel games were only in their infancy. Not as well developed in its sophistication as Turok II (its game sequel), but more of a primal and gritty standout classic in its own right!

You can one-shot most low-level enemies with standard arrows if you use them right. Just gotta hold the fire button until a sparkle jumps off the tip of the arrowhead - that's your cue to release.

I know this is an old video but I can't help but comment for the sake of completion: I don't think you mentioned the mortal wound drop if you kill enemies with your knife and standard arrows adding to your total health. I forget how much it goes up to though 😅 (might be 120 but I'm too lazy to look it up right now lol) Definitely a great review you've made haha Thanks for your time/effort.

Awesome game. Very quick notes about two relativelyw hidden things: Regular arrows: When you charge the shot completely, the arrow blinks white for a couple frames. It deals way more damage if you shoot at that time, and can spawn a PERMANT +5 HP (maxes at 125). This makes the bow a pretty good weapon to save up on ammo, and definitely better than the Pistol throughout the early game. Platforming: Tal Set can jump almost one second after leaving the edge of the platform he was standing on. This allows you to make crazy long jumps and makes everything waaaaay more comfortable.

Turok was my introduction to FPS back in 1997, was one of my favorite games in the N64, the platforming was a second nature to me due to plenty experience on the SNES games.

The save system was something that was added rather late into the game's development cycle, weeks in fact before release so there wasn't time to remove the lives system already there; When the game was originally in development the intention was to have a lives system with a complete game over you have to start from the beginning again like a lot of games from before 1996 as console games were basically viewed the same gameplay systems from arcade but with free play mode. It was after 1996 that console games started adopting the same game design which was common in PC games at the time as more game designers were exposed to new approaches to game design.

Never grew up with the Turok series but having played both games recently I still had a pretty good time. Something about the mix of Native Americans and Science Fiction in this franchise is really fascinating. The only other game I can think of that is in a similar vein would be Prey, the 2006 FPS. That game is seriously awesome and to me, the closest thing we get to playing a good version of Duke Nukem Forever (since it was originally developed by 3D Realms before moving to Human Head Studios).

I think the animation in the first two games is better than some I see today, better than most from the previous decade.

All of that with only two CGI capable machines, and some emu's to be mocap stand ins for the raptors.

I remember this was the first fps I ever tried on my cousin's N64. I loved the music, sounds, and the character being a native looking dude. Since I grew up poor and lacked knowledge of how games have limits depending on the hardware and stuff like that I thought my friends turok game for the gbc was fps as well and I traded lots of games and stuff like pokemon cards for it only to find out it wasn't like the N64 game. 😂

For the difficulty, yeah it's a bit iffy. However you probably could have completed hard if normal was too easy. I hit the same wall with ammos and respawning enemies. However, not only do some enemies don't respawn (the biggest toughest enemies usually don't) but you end up having to adjust. I ended up using the knife for anything that allowed it (the jumping reptiles when they weren't too numerous, the dart shooters, the small raptors and such) and kept weapons for bigger enemies or hitscanners and projectile shooters. I also kept the biggest weapons and special ammos for enemies I was pretty sure wouldn't respawn. By the end of the game, when I went to hunt the last few missing pieces of the Chronoscepter I was usually able to just rush through the levels taking little to no damage from respawnable monsters. It's all super weird, and it takes adjusting one's playstyle a lot, and not always in a comfortable way, but it ended up being something different !

So glad you mentioned "coyote time". Once you realize you don't have to jump as far as you think and you get the timing down platforming in this game goes from a headache to an enjoyable aspect. Especially playing the remaster. Unpopular opinion, but Turok > Goldeneye.

Dinosaurs are the reason why I had interest in Turok. Too bad the sequel of the reboot got cancelled.

They need to remake this in the same way as Doom. We don't need aim-down-sight or difficult combat scenarios, we just need a fast-paced, no-holds-barred shooter that calls back to the era from which it hails.
