Turrs are pretty much a staple for my family. I pick them and put the cleaned bird in a 2 L milk container. They stay fresh no problem. Good to see you pick the shell casings up off the water.

In our area we went more for the eiders, though the turrs often made a fine meal. Yes they keep good it those containers, gives the contains a second use which is also good...

I just tripped over this video. We just moved back home a couple years ago after over 30 years away. When i was a young lad in Fox Hr I was forced to eat Turrs, but always baked. My nan was a great cook and used to put on the best meals ever. The Turrs was something i couldn't stomach. Really tasted like an old drowned cod to me. Hated the buggers. Just called mom and asked her to save me one. Your supper looked some good!! BTW. She just sent some porcupine up. Can't wait to get it cooked up. You do dough boys. We do pastry on top of stewed meat. You should try it. Anyways. Love your video and will be searching for more!! Take care in the big land.

alot of your ways of cooking is the same as mind,, but this one is different, i never tried rice in with a pan fried turr even tho it looked good,,, we usually skins a few turrs before we starts picking lets them simmer in the pan while we picks the rest ,,,,big feed in the shed after they are picked ,cleaned and put away,,,

Good times can't beat it, much the same when we pick eider ducks, lots of time the liver gets roasted on the stove.. Try sometime with a bit of dainty rice, we mostly do it with eider duck, we call it rice gravy.. If someone say they are having rice gravy with the ducks then thats it a bit of rice added... Not minute rice got to be dainty...

Darn I made two batches just 3 days ago, could of filmed it then. I made a batch of white and a batch of whole wheat. After the bread cools down you can put the bread in freezer bags and put in the freezer. When you take it out of the freezer take it out of the bag its in and put in another. Sometimes a little frost is on the bag so that's why you change it. When thawed its just like fresh bread, the key though it has to be frozen fresh...

Rarely do you skin a bird. Any particular reason? I have frozen a lot of birds whole. They almost seem to keep better, longer. So turr tastes like meganzer?Thanks for the video.
@Biglandtrapper
@Biglandtrapper 3 жыл бұрын
You welcome, a lot of the fat and flavor is in the skin, the roasted skin on a eider duck would have to be the best of all... Not the same but some people avoid the fish eating birds, just mentioned another fish eating bird that's all...
@mushercdn
@mushercdn 3 жыл бұрын
@@Biglandtrapper I was curious because we have meganzers here. Both hooded and common. Depending on the recipe, they can be good or poor. When birds are scarce, I shoot them because a duck is a duck and they often give the dogs a good retrieve.
@Biglandtrapper
@Biglandtrapper 3 жыл бұрын
@@mushercdn We don't see the Hooded Merganser here so often they are more rare here but we get a lot of the Red Breasted & some Common Mergansers. Been awhile now since I had one but out of them all I would prefer the Common Merganser, they are bigger and quiet good. We call the Common Merganser a Gossert but not sure if I have it spelled right ...lol I can remember quiet well the first time I killed a Gossert, it was up around Shinnies Brook, many many years ago.... I will also add that sometimes a scatter Merganser mostly the Red Breasted ones will stay late in the fall and you might get one while Eider duck hunting, that time of the year they are the absolute best...

When I was 10, I asked Mom to cook this muskrat, I even cutout the recipe from Field and Stream. She damn near beat me to death. Then I asked her to cook pigeon. Well, that was the death of me. I never got to ask her how to cook skunk, which she ate lots of growing up, we have the pictures of Grandpa with his skunks.
@Biglandtrapper
@Biglandtrapper 3 жыл бұрын
I imagine a skunk would certainly have to be cleaned proper, probably shot as well and not from a trap... I heard that otter is ok if you shoot him when they don't know your there, like bang and he's dead, but if he knows your there and feels danger then the glands I guess get going and if you shoot him then not fit to eat...

@@Biglandtrapper I want to add my Grandma admitted to wanting to buy a Harley so she could ride. At my wedding, at age 89, she got on a Harley decker. It was funny, Best Man and I were going to lift her on, and she yelled, "get the hell away from me". The picture is on wall in my kitchen. My clients in NYC had her picture on the bike in their office. Respect.

Eider duck do have a stronger flavor but we ate so many of them growing up I guess we acquired a taste for them. Eider is great done like this and roasted with old fashion stuffing. The old fashion stuffing with salt pork and onions with a good helping of pepper compliment the eider very well.. I do believe the skin of a roasted eider duck should be worth about a thousands per square inch :) And must say I love the smell of the eider roasting,,

No offense but do you not feel wasteful like ripping them up like that instead of just ripping the feathers off and then you keep all the fat on the outside of the meat! You get way more food that way
@Biglandtrapper
@Biglandtrapper 2 жыл бұрын
NO, I pick probably more than 90% of the birds I harvest, some meals are better without the fat especially from fish eating birds. We keep all the good insides and often keep the heads & wings as well. People buy chicken and sometims remove the skin, its no different...
