I'm cool with this as long as this turtle has a proper basking area and tank. I know a few too many people would act as if their turtles were dogs while neglecting basic requirements. Heck, I my coworker just had a box turtle did after 15 years. I wasn't surprised, dude had no idea or interest in providing a proper basking lamp. Sure, maybe if there's a sunny room with a normal window they could basking under natural sunlight from indoors, but unless they live outside in the yard, they need proper lighting.

+30 years with my slider here in Brazil and happy about it ! It's considered exotic around here, since we've got our own native, Amazonic species - called "Tigre d'Água, or Water Tiger, in Portuguese, Green and Yellow, just like our National Flag. I can guarantee it's anything but "boring". Fella does everything that cutie in the vid can do and quite a lot more. Yet, I don't advise folks on getting one, since it might be expensive or otherwise hard to raise it well and appropriately. How did you get the turtle comfortable with handling? It would be amazing if I could take my red eared slide out even just for tank cleanings because she will not tolerate being held for more than a minute. She also hates shell touching, my mom was taking her out and was touching the algae and she literally propelled herself out of the hand and back into the tank. Luckily she was not hurt but I just want to make her more comfortable with handling in general. She’s an adult, maybe a bit older and we got her a little more than a year ago. I have just learned to not waste time in getting her up and out into the temp tank.

I had a turtle like this, Slow Poke. I used to use a toothbrush to scratch her shell and clean it. She reacted just like this guy, she LOVED it! Slow Poke was the size of a 50-cent piece when the neighborhood kids gave her to me. She was a Western Painted Turtle. Slow Poke went from a 10-gallon to a 20-long, to a 55-gallon tank. She had everything in her turtle condo. I filled the tank up within three inches to the top as they love to dive and swim. She would create a small tsunami in the morning when she saw me get out of bed as she wanted her brine shrimp. I would let her out to roam about when I took the tank down and cleaned it. She would walk around, follow me, or the cats, and then bask in the sun with the cats. Slow Poke was like this fella, very human-oriented, never in her shell, and a turtle that was really a pet like a dog. When my friend came over with her dog, the dog would sit nose pressed to the tank, Slow Poke would see her, dive down and stick her nose to the glass to greet her furry friend. One day, after cleaning her tank, I put her back in after she wandered around. She was acting funny, so I kept a close eye on her, then she fell off her dock, into the water, and passed away. I was devastated because she was perfectly fine before I cleaned the tank as I had done for 14 years! I believe they can live up to 30 years, I even had a very loving home for her if I passed away before her. My grandchildren, my friends, and my neighbors all miss that sweet girl. So, I know how smart turtles are and how they can get attached to humans!

Well, actually, there is a reason why that turtle cannot love his human like the human loves him; a difference in biology. Just, the attachment that turtle feels towards gis human is something vastly different then what people feel towards each other and animals; I think. See, mammals experience deep feelings of love and companionship because of our maturation cycle. We drink our mother's milk, and she protects us; and then we are particularly social animals as well. Because we have to care for our young, and cannot abandon them like: turtles, frogs, and snakes, do, we have paternal and maternal instincts to care for things that are "cute". Turtles don't have that. They never experience someone protecting them, except pre-birth. They are rather lonesome creatures who are not used to having anything care for them, so Mmy guess is that this turtle is either feeling a strange and ancient feeling of protection and comfort(like pre-birth), or he's decided that his dad is his mate(which is not as bad as it sounds, because it's more about the behavioral patterns; like deciding you want to spend the rest of your life with someone curled up on the couch).

I used to work at a pet store, and we has a hermit crab that was like this. This lady that came in for dog food, was so.taken by how cute and lovable he was, got him.on sight, and got the most expensive highend food and tank etc for him lol. But really you put your hand in the tank hed come out of his shell, run to you climb up, bring him to your fave and hed look at you kinda feel your face. And you could give him pets he liked it. Its like being around his own kind made him nervous, but second he sees a human hand its game time lol.

Yes, like mine! I found a turtle in the forest when walking my dog. The vet said it either fell off someone's window or someone abandoned him. Turtles are so clever, he always admired flowers in a vase, sensing it's a piece of nature indoors and he loved sitting on my chest or tummy, feeling the warmth (as if it was a warm rock in the sun), we always touched nose to nose, I never thought turtles are like that, he was so clever and so cute ❤️🐢

Really think about it. Some breeds might outlive you. Iirc the longest recorded for this one (red eared slider) is 70yrs but you should expect about 40 at least. Sale and purchase are also banned in some places because they're highly invasive. Unfortunately, ppl abandon them after realizing how much upkeep they need.

Please don’t get a turtle just because they’re cute and you want one. Think about it long and hard. Look through different articles (I recommend “The Spruce Pets”). Turtles are extremely hard to take care of and require your full focus on them. They might even live longer than you!

Now I miss my box turtle Spaz! 😭 She acted the same way. RIP 😢🤧 There were cars purposely running over box turtles that were crossing the road. My Dad stopped the car in the middle of the road, hopped out, and grabbed the last remaining turtle. My younger brother suggested the name and it stuck. She was friendly to my family but ended up bonding to me. If she wasn't already waiting at the door when I came home I could hear her "running" to greet me. If I went upstairs she'd tap on the bottom stair with her shell until I retrieved her; she'd also tap the kitchen refrigerator if she was hungry 😄, and tap the bathroom door when she wanted water/to go 💩 🤣. If she was outside with me she would act like a turtle but inside she would crawl in the bougie sleeping 'tent' I made her and sleep (small 🐢size: thick dark cloth on top of a cloth covered spongy foam for insulation against cold floor). She'd always sleep with everything STRETCHED out- her: head, arms, legs. If she was tired/woke up she would give one BIG yawn. She loved being held and for the back of her neck to be lightly rubbed. You could tell she was enjoying her "neck massage" because she'd start blinking frequently before closing her eyes and stretching her limbs out. She would stay sleeping sprawled out on me until I moved her off of me. She was such a great little turtle ❤.

Our black lab found and rescued two tiny red sliders in our yard in suburban Dallas, probably not long after they hatched. Two was all we could find of however many there were. We raised them up, took care of them, and eventually released them into a pond nearby, but the whole time, we never really thought of them as animals we could interact with, and who would interact with us. There are definitely ways of interacting with creatures in the animal world that we are in general, only vaguely aware of, if at all. I was amazed watching this video, and felt bad we never thought of them as having any interests outside of their little turtle enclosure. Sorry little turtle friends. We done you wrong.

You certainly didn't do them wrong. You kept them safe fed and gave them the biggest gift; a life in the wild. Well done. I have had my terrapins for over 30 years, my friendly one died on Friday (she sadly didn't come round after an operation). She was friendly. I have one left, they lived in the same tank, same care, but he'd take my nose off if I did what this chap was doing. So they're all individuals. You and I may not be able to replicate what this chap has. His terrapin is happy, mine are, and the ones you rescued have the best outcome a life free to swim and explore the wild. You did good : )
