the trick to playing 4:3/3:4 polyrhythms is to circle or highlight the notes that are played together. then work on playing them slowly until u get the rhythm itself. in the case of fantasie impromptu, you would want to highlight the 8th rest on the 5th measure on the treble clef and highlight the Lower C on the bass clef. with it, you would know which notes are played together.

But that doesn't work here since you have 12 notes in the bass and 16 in the treble. Therefore the notes never meet logically like in a normal 4:3 polyrhythm every 12 beats

@@yuridanylko , it seems to me that should work as well as you divide both 12 and 16 by 4 then you got 3 to 4, meaning, just break them into 4 sub-groups then you still get 3:4. Is that right?

@@stevenlin6106 Since posting I've realised the error I made. I got the 4 part the wrong way round. I thought it was confusing that 12 devided by 3 is 4 beats each and 12 devided by 4 is 3 beats each.

I remember my parents paid big bucks to buy a mechanical metronome for me years ago... then i was so happy to buy a pocket electronic one for half the price, with a flashing LED light. Wow that was hightech... now i can get a free app for my smartphone. How life changed

I need one that touches me because hearing a click does not jive with my brain. When I was in high school I had to play Jesu joy of man's desiring. And the intern teacher tapped my back and I could keep in time. My timing was horrible until I got to my senior in high school. That teacher knew how to get me in time with the chorus. It was an experience , I never did music after 3 years in college. My junior year at UCF ended my musical career. With the internet now I probably could learn this piece. My keyboard has a way to slow down the demo then I could play along with the slowed down demo.

I haven't clicked on your channel in a while! Back in 2014/2015 when I was 18/19 I learned how to play Fantaisie Impromptu by memorising each key for the left and right hand from one of your visual tutorials. In the end I memorised in such a weird way that it was my hands remembering where to play rather than knowing the keys visually, if that makes sense. I'm so rusty now as well haha. Might have to learn to replay it on my 88 key Yamaha Mox F Synthesizer. I also used to be able to play at 174bpm (Drum and bass xD) with a metronome with minimal mistakes.

The reason your teachers refused to teach you this piece is most likely because they cannot play it themselves. The polyrhythms involved in playing this piece are very complex and are an example of irreducible complexity. Meaning if you take any part of it out the rhythm falls apart. That's the tough part of learning this piece. You can't simply take it left hand then right, or work on parts, but rather for it to work you must practice it all together. Just like one cannot drive a car using only the pedals. You get the idea. The progressive metronome and 4:3 :3:4 polyrhythm video by BachScholar here are very instructive and work. Keep at it. The wonderful thing about these kinds of rhythms are that all of a sudden it is like BAM! and the whole thing comes together under your fingers but it takes a while for the brain to sort out and split time and translate this to the fingers. I believe I'll have this piece in another few weeks. Thanks for the wonderful video!!

I stumbled upon your tutorial after doing a search for the Fantasie to post on Facebook. This is a wonderful service you have done for pianists like myself, especially with this piece which deals with those tied triplets in the left hand. On my own I could never find the way to make the right hand's 16th notes blend into the left hand's playing - I just couldn't. The way you broke this down made it so easy for me visualize and feel. This is brilliant! Thank you. When played at virtuoso speed, it sounds fantastic but the timing on this is so hard that it's hard to learn even with the sheet music because the notes become a blur and no longer seem related to what's on the page! Hearing it at this speed brings my ear into the equation when I'm reading the music and makes it so much easier to learn! Thank you thank you thank you!

I'm 59 yo, just starting with piano, had my very first lesson. I really appreciate you doing this because it's so interesting to see the notes that are being played instead of just eating the trail dust of the right hand. Yes he does, it should be in the side-bar about 11 videos down or so, I think it depends on your youtube settings. If not just go to his channel and search it, he's not quite as good as some of the masters, but plays it very eloquently and thoughtfully.

Thanks so much for your very insightful tutorial. My problem is the speeding-up process: i'm able to play the scale and the impromptu at quarternote 54, but when i speed up the tempo, i'm unable to maintain the together-rightleft-right left-right-routine. It is really amazing how accurate you're able to play this at different speeds! Appreciate your advice...

I find the slow part more difficult because of the various ornaments together with the polyrhythm, but most of the videos teach the fast part.

Great tutorial . I am probably up to 84 bpm so far . But my edition is marked as 84 per Half Note . I am a bit confused -does that mean I am supposed to play at 168 per quarter note ? Did Chopin really want it to be that fast ? Could you tell me what the time signature is on your edition ? I despair of ever getting to the speed I have heard on some recordings -but it is fun trying .

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in your 54 beats per min version (four quarter note clicks per bar), you only hold the opening G#'s for 4 clicks (i.e. ONE bar). But should it not be 8 clicks, 2 bars??

I started even slower that his slowest to get the 4 against three even slower. First I worked it out with tick marks on paper with two sets of marks one set marking the 4 beats and the other with three beats. I practiced drumming them with my hands until it became every easy, then it was easier to approach the actual piece. The lowest common denominator is twelve minibeats that match up both hands. It's funny but two accomplished pianists advised me to just play the two hands fast, "mashing" together the 4 with the three. Bad advice.
