Tutorial - Fix Terrain Height of Placed Lot

When you place a lot in a world and it sinks below the surrounding terrain, or is way to high above the surrounding terrain and your sims can't use it then, if you want to fix the problem, this is the cheat you'll need.
SetImportedTerrainOffset n

I know this is 5 years old, but you are the first person who has really demonstrated how to do this. I read a forum thread where people didn't believe lots placed like this! Finally someone mentioned the SetImportedTerrainOffset cheat, but it wasn't very clear. I have played Sims 3 since its release. You are the first person who really explained it with examples. (BTW, if you want to do something like .5 I discovered you need to type in 0.5 (zero before the period) to get it to work.)

Thank you for the comment. It took me a while to work it out and then a few years later I started making these videos. I'm glad it helped. I got the game on release too and still play. My story videos often have extra information in them that people find helpful too although they are not tutorials. Happy Simming.

@@karritz1542 I just subscribed. I thought I was going crazy when I read people saying the lot raising/lowering doesn't happen because it's happened since my very first game. I always figured it was an inherent problem with the game because of its hilliness and nothing to be done.

I can't believe I've never even seen this on the various TS3 wikis or cheat lists. It's so helpful! I've given up on placing so many lots because they'd automatically be too high or low in the terrain. Thank you for this!

Oh wow! Thank you so much for this tutorial! I didn't know about this cheat & there's a lot I've wanted to place and when I do it "shoots up" way into the air. Not knowing how to fix it, I've left it out but I want the lot in this world as it would be perfect for it. You explained everything beautifully by the way, I understood perfectly what you meant and now I can't wait to try this cheat out. Now I really want to play TS3 so I guess I'm going to run off and find a "cure" for the freezing and crashing. Thank you too. I thought this cheat might be a revelation for some. I'm pleased you found it useful. It can be a bit tedious as it involves trial and error but sometimes it's worth it.

Oh it will be well worth the tediousness for me to be able to place The Duke of Bows Renaissance Faire on the "hillside" in Barnacle Bay! There is so little to do there & I thought this fair would fit in with this world. I'll have to tell you my story about BB one of these days!

Thank you so much! Spent like an hour trying to get the boardwalk to sit on a Bridgeport beach and it kept being super sunken in and unusable, and flattening the lot just broke the whole thing. Had to set the cheat to 11! thank you so much for uploading :))

How do I actually APPLY the cheat though? Where and when? When you're given the option to rotate the lot? In build/buy mode? Selecting it from Edit Town mode? Where? I'm confused. I type in the cheat and literally nothing happens.

You type in the cheat before you place the lot on an empty lot.

If you need to change the offset number you must bulldoze the lot and place it again after you change tge number.

@@karritz1542 AH I figured it out. On a blank lot, I (selected it, didn't know if that was necessary), typed in the cheat while in town-edit mode, then placed the import on the lot. Then I'd back in and out repeatedly until I got it level. This is a very confusing "cheat" to actually figure out how to use. A little too essential to be a cheat though, wish there was an in game tool for this.

I agree. It's a very annoying process. When I place a lot and it isn't quite level I have a little argument with myself and sometimes I decide it'll be easier to just put up with the lot not being quite at the same level as the surrounding area. But knowing about the cheat is essential or you will occasionally not be able to use something you really want to use where you really want to use it.

I so not understand, do you put the cheat in edit mode before placing the lot?

It doesn't matter if you're in edit mode or not. But you do need to use the cheat before placing the lot. As shown in the video, this process may need to be done a few times before you guess the right offset number to use. Each lot will probably require a different offset number to be used.

Check the number you enter at the end of the cheat. There must be a space between the cheat and the number. Try a different number. Try negative or positive numbers. This is a tedious cheat to use as it can take a while to find the number that works for you. Also check the spelling of the cheat that you typed in. I hope you sort it out.

@@karritz1542 do i have to type the cheat when i’ve selected the lot i want to place in edit mode? or am i supposed to do it in edit mode with no lot selected or am i supposed to do it when i’m able to rotate the lot? i’ve been trying to figure it out for an hour 😭

You need to enter the cheat before you place the lot. Once you have successfully placed your lot you need to enter the cheat one more time and set it to 0 so any future lots you place won't be affected by the cheat. I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I was exhausted last night and was in the process of turning off the computer when I found your question. I'm much better this morning. I just tested the cheat in a fresh game and it worked for me first attempt. I hope you manage to work out a solution.

Which world is that?

Yes - I made the castle ages ago. It's on the Sims 3 Exchange and available for download. www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=7653727 The world in the picture is Dragon Valley. It's a store world. I like to build up on the empty plateau. The sims can easily get into town and there are no roads up there. I have a whole village up there in one of my games.
