Dude your instructions were spot on! thanks for making this so incredibly easy! everything worked. I would add an edit however. Tell people to back up their storage with a separate file. Going to settings > system > back up restore. This makes sure to get all the settings and capture gallery and other things that uploading to the cloud doesn't back up.

My son's PS4 HDD died the death, so I was left with a pretty puzzle, how to fix it on a nonexistent budget. Being fairly techy but unfamiliar with PS system I have no time to tinker and figure it out. Your tutorial was a godsend! Thank you! The new firmware (4.50 - as of March 2017) does everything for you. It detects the new drive, realizes it needs to be updated and asks you to toss the USB drive containing the 800 mb update on there. Thing is, if you have a chubby usb stick, it won't fit into the slot - you'd need an extension cable to do so! I used a 1 terabyte sshd drive and I ended up with 861 gb after the required system stuff on it....

I replaced the 500GB hard drive to a 2TB. I followed your instructions to the tee. I get to the reboot and install the new system update, and it keeps telling me that the update can't be found. Please help. Update: After I realized that I installed the 300MB file (it's easy to get confused with there being three links) instead of the 900MB file, I corrected the error and the system has been updated and the gaming has begun. I been searching alot on a solution on how to do this and more specifically how to completly remove the partition table and start completly fresh with a new formatted drive. If you are trying to find a solution to this and can't figure out why applications won't format PS4 protective drive and your hard drive is just either bricked or badly curropted then this tutorial is for you. Generally this tutorial is used for people that have almost like a dead hard drive in other words the safe mode built into the PS4 won't even work or you can't access any bios repair function from the system. So I just want to share what I have learned. The Playstation drives have what is called a GPT file system on it which stands for GUID Partition Table which is a Protective file system. Generally these types of file systems use like over 20 partition tables on the drive. That is why many users are running into trouble trying to format this type of hard drive because most systems and applications will not allow you to format this type of disk drive. It is encripted and protected. Something I figured out is what you need to do is "remove the Protective partition" GPT before you can use partition recovery software to sucesfully format the drive. In order to do this you must use the "Diskpart Utility" This is autmatically embedded in windows and you can run the tool directly from the command prompt. It is a powerful tool that over rides any other application and removes the partition even though its locked or protected. The steps are as follows: 1. Open a Command Line Tool, type in DiskPart and Press Enter 2. At the diskpart prompt type "list disk". ... 3. At the diskpart prompt, type "select disk x", where x is the disk number that you want to remove the protective partition. 4. Type “list partition” which will display a listing of all the partitions on the selected disk. 5. Type “select partition n” (where “n” is the partition number you want to have removed). 6. Finally, Type “delete partition override” which will then permanently delete the partition selected. This will allow your drive to no longer be locked by windows and if you look in the disk management, the disk should now say "unnalocated space" in which you can proceed to format it with a fat32 or exfat file system to be ready to run on your PS4 again. Or if you prefer a NTFS to run on your windows Operatying system. Note: In order to find the disk number, usually its listed in disk management but if your operating system is not able to identify it due to serously bad curroption of the drive, this may be a bit tricky so you want to download MiniTool partition wizard which will allow you to see the drive and what Number is designated for that drive. Hope this proved valuable for anyone that has had alot of difficulty figuring this out.

Mystic - you rock! Thanks a ton. My son's PS4 had a problem. Getting the error code SU-41336-7. I searched and found that it is the problem of hard disk. I went to authorised Sony service centre and they told me that this PS4 is not repairable. They got me a 50% discount to buy a new PS4 as it was only 2 years old. I then watched your video and got the hard disk replaced and got my PS4 back to normal. Thumbs down to Sony service centre.

For some reason every time I do this I have my phone connected and can’t find the link, I have a newer version and it’s a ps4 slim. Every time I boot it up it says the storage device is not connected. Is there a solution to this?

You saved me a lot of headache, thought I was gonna have to buy a T8 torx screwdriver, but this was easy to do. Took the 860 evo ssd I had in my computer, formatted it to exFAT and got it into the ps4 without too much screaming lol

I just took it out then made sure I put it all the way back in then went to option 5 on safety mode it worked perfectly. I bought a portable storage box for 40$ to prevent this problem it worked easily

Never been dropped, never spilled anything etc... one day I got a error code ce-36329-3 and I couldn’t put my PlayStation in safe mode. Took it to a computer store and they said $130 to fix it. I went on Amazon and bought a 1TB Toshiba internal hard drive for $50. Followed these steps and my PlayStation is back working. In other words, You can fix yourself if you get that error code and this video WILL HELP! Thanks again man!

Thanks for the vid! I got the error no installing file found but it's because I had the smaller 3-400mb file instead of the larger 900mb file. Make sure you scroll down to the bottom of Sony's website where it says "Perform New Installation" and download that version of the file :)
