Tutorial: how to do ruler work with the BERNINA ruler foot no. 72

Күн бұрынThe BERNINA ruler foot # 72 was specifically made for ruler work on BERNINA sewing machines.
In this video we show you step by step how to prepare your BERNINA machine and how to use the ruler foot with to create attractive lines and curves - with unparalleled precision.
The high-sided edge allows precise quilting around all edges of the template. The adjustment dials wheel allows the height of the presser foot to be customised to the thickness of the quilt. This means that the ruler foot can also be used with BERNINA sewing machines which do not offer the option for adjusting presser foot height. A patented invention exclusively from BERNINA!
Markings on the presser foot help to produce accurate seams. The notch at the front of the ruler foot allows you to keep an eye on your work at all times. I have a 820qe. I 've had the #72 foot for about 5 months and have been using it without the settings you suggest. I have been adjusting the screw according to the thickness of my batting and did not adjust the presser foot pressure....left it at normal (50). Stitch quality was great!! Tried your settings and not so good .....am I doing something wrong? Will the way I have been sewing damage my machine?

Hi Annette, no this will not damage your machine. If you are satisfied with the stitch quality please go on with your settings! For 7 and 8 Series machines, we recommend fully lowering the sole with the height adjustment dial (screw) for maximum stability of the foot and then adjusting the height of the sole with the presser foot pressure settings. It is however also possible to only work with the screw.

My machine (770QE) doesn't recognize the ruler foot, so what foot do I put it in to do ruler foot quilting? Thank you in advance.

Dear Linda, thanks for asking. The B 770 QE has a presser foot recommendation only. Therefore, it is not possible to actually select a presser foot like on a B 790. Of course, you can still use the Ruler Foot #72 for your quilting projects! Just make sure to select a straight stitch.

I'm one of the lucky ones, my foot has come in and I've picked it up from my dealer. I also have a foot w/adapter from another manufacturer so I also have a number of the rulers. What I would like is to know if there is any dealers that have the practice fabric that is used on the video. I would love to get a couple of the panels to test my new foot on. Any idea who has it???

Hi Linda, yes, your local BERNINA dealer should be able to get the practice fabric shown in the video through our US subsidiary BERNINA of America or through Brewer Sewing (wholesale company for notions, fabrics etc.). Maybe your dealer even has the fabric in the store already. Kind regards

Is there a foot that can be used with the stitch regulator and templates? I have an 830.

Hi Maggie, it is theoretically possible to do ruler work with the BSR. However, we strongly recommend not to use the BERNINA stitch regulator with the BERNINA rulers, for the following reasons: a) you will not be able to use the rulers to a full 360 degrees around the BSR b) due to the shape of the BSR sole there's a risk of hitting the ruler with the needle. This could possibly damage your machine.

Hi Dianna, thanks for your comment. The ruler foot has been designed specifically for ruler work. For free-motion quilting we would recommend using a foot with a spring (hopper) mechanism, see kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9eKZat5yNjbgXk.html. The spring of our "hopper feet" presses the foot down onto the fabric and ensures that the fabric does not pull up. The spring of the ruler foot serves a different purpose. It cushions the blow of the needle bar and makes sure nothing gets damaged when the foot is in a raised position and the needle is accidentally lowered. Ruler work requires a fixed (non-hopping) position of the foot.

Hi Wilma, the BERNINA Toolbox software will work on PC and Mac. It supports many different embroidery file formats, including ART, EXP, VP3, JEF, Tajima, VST, DST, XXX - and, most importantly for you, HUS. You should be able to use it without problems. Things are totally different though when it comes to accessories that are attached to the sewing machine. Presser feet and other BERNINA accessories are not tested on our competitor's products. We don't recommend using the BERNINA ruler foot on your Husqvarna. Kind regards from Switzerland

I need to order the Legacy version of this foot for my Vintage 830 & 1130 machines. Where can I find info on the accessories available for the Legacy Adjustable Ruler Foot? Particularly interested in doing echo quilting. Are there clear echo disks to go with this foot??

Hi Susan, there are 2 options for basting with the B 880. You can select stitch no. 21 or straight stitch no.1 and activate the long stitch icon in the “i” button.

Hi, what foot setting should I be using? The 72 is not listed. It looks like 1c is on your machine but my 790 won't let me put the needle down with this setting. Thank you

Hi Alison, thanks for asking. Foot no. 72 is brand new and therefore not yet listed in your machine's firmware. A firmware update for the B 790 is expected for December. After the update, ruler foot No. 72 will be visible in the presser foot selection. Until then, please select presser foot No. 9 (darning foot). It is similar to the new ruler foot.

I have my 820 on the Bernina quilt frame - I'd like to do ruler work, but obviously need a ruler base for the machine. Is such a thing available?

Hi Linda, unfortunately, the adjustable ruler foot no. 72 can't be used on the older BERNINA quilt frame ("Grace" frame). Due to the position of the BERNINA 820 on the frame, there is a risk of your hand getting caught under the machine's Dual Feed when holding a ruler. You will be able to do ruler work with your BERNINA 820 and the new ruler foot though when using the machine without the quilt frame. Kind regards from Switzerland

Thanks for your comment and question. With the BERNINA longarm machines, it is possible to use the ruler foot (96 or 72) and the BSR at the same time because the two BSR sensors are located in the stitch plate. With household sewing machines, it has to be either the BSR foot or the Ruler foot 72. It is not possible to use both at the same time, and we haven't found a way yet of combining the height-adjusting mechanism of the Ruler foot and the BSR technology in one presser foot.

@@thepinkstockbrokers Hi Penny, Hello Penny, to have your B 830 recognize foot #72 you need to do an update of the machine firmware to version 34.21.56. Please go to www.bernina.com/en-US/Support-US/Machines/BERNINA-8-Series/BERNINA-830 Here you will find the files and the download instructions. On page 44 of your manual you can find instructions on how to update your machine. If you are not able to manage yourself then please contact your BERNINA Dealer. A workaround is to select foot #26 and you will be able to work with Foot #72.

When will this ruler be readily available throughout the world? I'm hearing that some US dealers are only being shipped 1, possibly 1 at a time, whereas dealers in other countries do not know when they'll be able to get them. BTW - The text in this video was not easy to read. I think partly the font itself, but also the color, size and where it was placed was distracting. Something to consider for future videos.

We expect these products to be available throughout the world at the end of January 2016. Yes, we agree, some of the text overlays in the video are not placed in the perfect spot. It's because this foot is highly liked and wanted so shops are having troubles due to high demand and being backed ordered. Some shops had this foot ordered back in July during BU. It's like when the #97!was released!

Dear Primrose, thanks for your feedback. You can deactivate the Japanese subtitles by clicking on the "closed captions" (CC) icon in the menu bar of the KZfaq video player. Dear Tineke, thanks for your comment. The BERNINA ruler foot #72 is not a hopping/hopper foot though. Once you have adjusted the position of the foot according to the thickness of the fabric or quilt sandwich, the foot stays perfectly stable. The spring mechanism (which looks somewhat like the spring on hopper feet for free-motion quilting) is there to cushion possible blows from the needle bar when accidentally sewing with the presser foot in a raised position. Unfortunately, the adjustable ruler foot no. 72 is not available for your machine as it is not compatible with older machine types listed in category A of our accessory catalog, see page 2 of the PDF at www.bernina.com/en-US/Support-US/Product-Catalogs (the Favorit 840 is a predecessor of the 940 which is featured in this list). I think your video"s should have voice instructions like the HandiQuilter video"s do instead id written instructions instructions are toofast

Dear Carol, thank you for your comment and suggestion. We use written words instead of voice-over on some of our videos because that makes it possible to stop the video and still read the instructions / information. Plus, text inserts make our videos understandable for the hearing impaired. That being said, I agree that some of the text inserts in the video above are too fast. We will try to do better next time!
