Tutorial - How to make a mini-map in Unity

In this video I demonstrate one method to create a top view mini-map for a game level. This method is using a separate camera and a render texture. I also show how we can use different layers to filter out objects from being rendered when using multiple cameras in your scene.

is there a video you have made where you make a map like the minimap? what i mean a map is like gta when you press the m key and being able to see the whole terrain

Dope, however if using HDRP, having multiple cameras tend to slow the computer to a stop. What would you recommend for that?

I haven't messed around with HDRP very extensively but, I would think that by applying layer and or volume masks, and occlusion culling, you would be limiting what is being rendered by the second camera, thus saving on performance. It all depends on your project and what is being rendered in your mini-map (if you were to choose this approach). I have not tried this yet, however you might be able to save draw calls by using a custom render texture and set the update to 'on demand' and update the texture on an interval like every .5 seconds for example with a script. If after doing all of that there are still significant performance issues, then I think you might want to consider a different approach to creating a mini-map. The biggest thing is to make sure you aren't rendering your entire scene with post processing effects with two cameras at the same time.
