Very encouraging to see your post here. I have a local paint store here in Memphis called Ferrel Calhoun who makes a competitor to Kiltz II. I bought a pint on a whim a couple years ago just to see if I could make a canvas act like Yupo. Never got around to experimenting and so with your KZfaq here I'm encouraged to do so now. Part of the fun of Alcohol inks is to find ones own methods and canvas can be a more an economical option now because of your instructions here. Thanks for you help. I also see where Grafix has a new "Opaque White Plastic Craft Plastic" too.

I'm so pleased it's encouraged you to go and try it out. I suppose any kind of water/stain blocker should work really. I don't see why it would only be Kilz 2. I love that you can use alcohol inks on canvas. It's such a beautiful medium and I love seeing it on a bigger scale. I hope you have fun experimenting 😁

How long do you normally wait for inks to dry before you add more? and what do you use to protect the finished product?? Im starting to use inks as a side hobby and just looking for some more tips
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 3 жыл бұрын
Inks can vary in time to dry depending on what surface you do them on but if you are using alcohol inks then they shouldn't take too long to dry because the alcohol will evaporate very quickly. I use new ink after a few minutes but if you are using acrylic inks, it could take a few hours. @EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest using 90% or above. You can use 70% however you might not get all the lovely effects that the higher percentage of alcohol will give. This is because the lower percentage will have a mixture of water and oil in it which can affect the overall "look"and blends of the inks.

@EmmaRave 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how the inks will look on top of epoxy, I haven't tried it. You could try it on a really small section of epoxy but then you would need to seal it again after with epoxy. Most water repelling paints should roughly work with this technique, it doesn't need to be this particular brand.

Hi I’m wondering if you think gesso or even a decoupage medium? Would work to prepare canvas
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, I'm afraid gesso isn't really going to work because it's not waterproof. I'm not sure about the decoupage medium. You could try it but it would have to be quite thick. I think the main thing is that you want the canvas to resist the inks soaking a lot.

Hi, I'm assuming you can but I'm afraid I haven't tried it with the markers myself. I just use Isopropyl to cleaner the brushes. I put a bit in a clean jam jar and leave the brush in it for a while but this is my favourite method if I have time - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9mgpJWS073Pj40.html

Using BIN does prepare the canvas well but each time I get settlement marks (don’t know how else to describe them) like thin rivers after it dries all over the surface. Happens on large and small canvas. Does this happen to yours and how to prevent? Thanks
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 2 жыл бұрын
A few ideas to help you with this - sand down the canvas before you start. It could be that the texture on the canvas is causing this to happen. Another idea is to use a foam roller instead of a brush to create an even texture. You could also paint a layer of standard white primer underneath before you use the BIN primer to help with taking away some texture. Lastly, make sure you mix the primer really really well - like maybe 5 minutes as it could be that it is not mixed properly and is separating on the canvas. I hope that helps ☺️👍🏻

Hi Thanks for sharing - however - have you had any issue with the primer being stiff once it dries? i.e. slight cracking if pressure is applied to the canvas (not that you should be applying pressure lol). Only asking as I've used a product in Australia called Blitz Quick Seal and it gave a beautifully smooth surface for alcohol inks on the canvas, but you would need to treat the canvas with extreme delicacy to avoid permanent embellishment or slight cracking from unpredictable pressure.
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for your comment! No, I haven't had any issues with the primer cracking at all. I don't do more than 2 layers of it so it shouldn't be too thick. The only thing with this primer is that it is slightly shiny looking but other than that it works great 👍

One more concern that was raised by another artist on KZfaq was that the oil based primers where you need to clean up with methylated spirits, the white can turn yellow.. have you heard the same and experienced it?
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 3 жыл бұрын
@@annamorton3508 I haven't had it done to mine but I know it can happen after years and years. If you are worried, you could do a coat of white over the top and you can buy sealers that are UV resistant or you could resin it 😁

I'm really sorry but I don't know. I've never used it before but I'm assuming it wouldn't react well with the inks - it will probably push them away (dispel them) but maybe it would work if you are usually it on the painting once the ink has dried.

Zinsser is an American company. You can get B-I-N at any hardware store in the US. My question is this: since alcohol is a shellac solvent, wouldn't using alcohol inks break down the primer?
@EmmaRave

I'm afraid I don't know the chemistry side of things but I and a lot of other alcohol ink artists have been using this primer with alcohol inks and it seems to work well and the primer holds up. Maybe it's the double coating that helps It to work ☺️
