Reasons for fighting & mobbing and how to help cats to get along.
My Siamese Cats Otani & Yozora had a big fighting phase more than 6 years ago, but I could bring peace into our home again & since then there were no fights ever again.

I simply scolded my male cat... it worked.... kind of... Now the other cat(a female) is way too cocky and now is beating up the old male cat. I defiantly screwed up somewhere there. Luckily for me there is no blood, the female cat is really aggressive while my male doesn't know how to socialize properly. We've never had another cat in our house for his entire life. As you can see this isn't a great mixture.

So much wisdom from a kind and gentle soul. Otani and Yozora are truly fortunate to have you as their human. I would never in a million years have guessed that there was ever any discord between them. They're always so affectionate with each other. The truth is that by the end of the video I was crying with joy from watching them. Otani and Yozora are so sweet and kind with each other, and this can only come from living with someone who is herself sweet and kind towards her kitties - and I suspect towards all living creatures, including people. Well done Rita. :-)

Thank you very much! Happy to hear that you liked the video so much! 😺😺 Well, in the end it was my doing, that they had fights. Otani was just bored & frustrated, that's why he became a bully. I played with them only once a day & we went on walks only once a week. That wasn't enough for him at all. But, I'm very glad that I didn't give up & worked on the solution as much as I did. In the beginning I didn't thought, that I could stop their fights or rather stop Otani's behavior. I didn't understand why he was behaving like that at all & just thought that he was a jerk "naturally" & nothing could be done about that. I didn't know that the solution was so "easy"...I just had to give him a happy & fulfilling life & then he wouldn't have any reason to be negative towards anyone. I really hope that this video will help other owners & will prevent cats getting re-homed or living in a home with bullying & fights.

Sadly often people think that nothing can be done, when cats don't get along...or that cats aren't trainable either. I want to show, that it's possible. I wish you a lot of success with your cats. :)

Thank you 🙏 for this!! My boy kitty definitely is very social and requires lots of play time. He has been constantly chasing away his smaller sister and is too rough with her. She definitely is more cuddly, nurturing, and gentle by nature. I can definitely tell she’s lost a lot of confidence. When he’s not pouncing on her, they’re generally cordial to each other but it would be amazing to see them one day become close friends. I’m going to implement your strategies. Thanks for this! It’s helped me understand my two girls a little better. I have an 8yr old and a 9month old that barely tolerate each other. The older one is trying to but she doesn’t understand how to socialize whereas the younger is desperate to play and changes to stalking and hitting her when I leave the room. This has given me a bit of hope! It’s been a massive uphill battle with their introduction process as they are both strong characters but have such a big difference in age. I’m on my 8th month now of the introduction and hopeful that they will get along better without the constant growling from my older girl

thank you for this wonderful video! ive had my first cat yuki since she was 3 months old and she is now 4 years old. i adopted a male kitten named salem 2 weeks ago and he is now 10 weeks (he was rescued). yuki is not scared of his scent and she can live peacefully with him. but he is a very very energetic cat and wants to constantly touch and play with her. she is not comfortable with touching him yet but he constantly touches her and chases her. she will hiss at him and slap him but they have only fought twice. i am hoping that they will both learn to live with each other
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it. Well, the kitten needs more play daily...because he has too much energy. This can go really bad, when he gets bigger/ an adult. Meaning that he may start bullying the female. When having a male & a female the risk is very high for this to occur...so you need to pay extra attention to exhausting the male with play every single day multiple times. It's not a good sign that the older cat has the need to hiss & slap him...you should be the one correcting the kitten's behavior. Don't let cats fight, because it often will get worse at some point. Make sure he is castrated with 5-6 months of age, don't wait longer.

Such good information available on your channel. I have watched this video so many times in the last 4 days and your advice is so clear and precise. You should write books. A stray kitten came into my yard and I decided to keep her. Long story short, I think I need to go back and re-introduce her to my 1-year old cat following your instructions in part two. I kept them separated for about a week, but there were some steps in your videos that I didn't know about before that would have made a difference. Thank you for showing everyone what potential cats have! Have you ever had two female cats before? This is my first time having both females.

Thank you very much! Very glad my videos were helpful. I wish you a lot of success with your cats! Yes, I had 2 females before. Years ago my female Norwegian Forest Cat lived with my Siamese Boy & Girl together. She didn't live long though, because she was born with a severe heart-defect. I also lived once with my sister together, who had 2 cats as well (boy & girl). So to sum it up, there were 5 cats in the house. 3 females & 2 males. Recently I got new kittens & have now 3 cats again, but this time it's 2 males & 1 girl. Best Regards, Rita

Nice video and great tips! One thing I didn't know was about the laser pointer ... I never knew that wasn't a good idea and didn't know WHY is wasn't. I know they both need stimulation and exercise, but from the video I can see Otani needing more than Yozora. She is definitely more laid back. Yozora still loves her kleenex!
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The laser pointer has actually even more negative points. If the owner accidentally points the dot of light into the eyes of the cat, it can damage the sight or even blind the cat permanently. Also there are many cases of cats getting restless & obsessed with that dot of light, starting even searching for that randomly for hours or chase light reflections from the window & so on. They also completely lose interest in "real" toys & lose their natural hunting instinct. So, it can actually lead to a mental sickness. That goes for dogs too. I know cases from dogs ripping doors, walls & so on to shreds because there was a reflection of light from the window pointing there. It can be even so bad, that they search that dot of light on a walk, being completely consumed by their obsession & disregard owner, other dogs & so on. It's a really sad thing to see. Of course not every cat or dog will experience something like that, but the risk is high & really hard to reverse. Plus, there is no bond between pet & owner while playing, no interaction & eye-contact at all. With real toys you have always an interaction & the pet connects the owner with the activity the whole time. Both sides learn about each other, their body-language, movements, emotions, how to be mindful to each other, what the other likes & doesn't like & so on. Which is, in my opinion, the function of playing, so both sides can bond. But with the laser pointer the cat gets completely detached from the owner, the moment it's chases the dot of light till the toy gets put away. So, it's like the cat plays alone. Yes, Otani needs a lot more exercise, he is nuts...haha. Yes, Yozora got calmer with 3 years of age, Otani is still like a teenager.

The chaser going after my cat corners my 2nd cat then meows in a friendly way, the other one gets scared and attacks and a fight starts.
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 4 жыл бұрын
I hope you will work on the situation with your cats, it's definitely needed. It's clear that it's bullying. Cornering is always meant as a threat. Also the meow is most likely not friendly either, because it doesn't fit the situation. A cat that corners another, isn't in a friendly mood, it wants to bully & fight. Also the cornered cat gets scared from the meow, so she clearly knows it's not meant friendly either.

@@TravelersGarden_dgdr Thank you, I'll work until it's corrected. The problem is my fault, I need to spend more time playing with my youngest cat. Two are older and very laid back, but he's younger and needs to play. I've been suffering from depression and animals suffer for that too. Things aren't terrible and there's never any blood shed, but one is being picked on and bullied a bit. It's gotten a little worse without the play time. They are very good cats, I just need to provide more stimulation. All the shelving is great and I'm going to do that and get more cat trees. This video is full of great info! Soo similar to the advice Jackson Galaxy would give. I adopted my first cat when she was like 4 weeks old, abandoned in a car. Took her in and spayed her but because of the lack of interaction with other cats she became shy and possessive over her stuff (or territorial i should say). After a few months i adopted a second cat and the introduction process was a pain. The first cat was the one who would growl, hiss and even avoid play or eating simply because she would hear the other cat cry through the door. Ultimately after 2 months, they finally liked each other (not love just like haha). Recently i adopted a third and it has been worse :( my first cat absolutely doesnt like the third she will hiss and growl at the smell or sight of her. My second cat is the sweetest thing she just wants to be friends with the third cat and will often stay away when the first starts hissing or growling. Here's the thing though.. my first and my third cat hiss and growl at each other. They have the same negative energy towards each other. But independently they are both very sweet with me or anyone else. I've tried the slow introduction of keeping them in separate rooms, trade their belongings so that they get accustomed to their scents, place a gate in between them when i feed them so they associate each other with positive things but nothing really seems to work out. My third cat really hates my other 2 cats and idk what else i could do to improve their behaviors toward each other. Edit: i should also mention that i trade cats into their rooms so they can smell each others scents. I also play with them separately but equally so they all get enough attention. I dont free feed. They have enough litter boxes, access to water and toys. Not sure if im missing something but im just surprised that after all that work they dont seem to get along and i just feel discouraged 😞

Hi. I don't know if you are still helping people with problems with their cats, but I watched your video and it was very helpful to me. We had one female cat, then we adopted a male kitten. At first they didn't get along real well, but eventually they were like two peas in a pod and our female cat really takes care of the male kitten. Then we adopted a one-year-old male cat comedy star female cat does not like him at all. We have him in our bathroom and female cat will chase him in there. Anytime he tries to come out of there, she chases him back in. We feed them together sometimes and play with them. We let her know that it is not okay to bully him, but the situation is not getting better. I didn't know if you had any advice for us? Thank you for your time!

Thank you! Glad you liked the video. I think you need to do a proper introduction with them. I have tutorial about that. After that is done, you can use the tips from the current video. You can also look into my 2 introductions which I did 2 years ago (I have 2 new cats.). There you can see from day 1 till friendship, how I did the introduction, dealt with negative behavior of the cats etc. I think, seeing that "live" is very helpful. Here you can find everything: kzfaq.info/sun/PLz2-JM3q5bi62nhJ6rABidyRFYIv_479r Video Nr. 2 is the detailed introduction tutorial. The 2 videos after that are the 2 introductions "live". I also recommend: If not done yet, neuter all cats in the household. If that`s not done, then the chances don`t look good. Make sure that you play with all cats multiple times day, so that they`re tired. A tired a cat has no energy to bully anybody. I recommend that you play with your 2 resident cats, especially the female, more than usual, because their life is currently more stressful than usual. Many other tips are found in my introduction tutorial etc. Best Regards, Rita

I need help. We have two rescues, both cats were taken from the street so they are strays. We’ve had the kitten since he was 3 weeks old as he was very sick and laying in the middle of a road. We took him in and he was nurtured back to health. He is now around 12 weeks old. A few weeks back we found a cat in the same area as the previous and took her in. We kept them apart until they were both fixed and healed. She is around a year old, very docile, sweet loves being petted! The boy is incredibly playful and we play with him for hours on end! We have been trying the slow introduction, feeding them with a door or covered gate. Keeping them in separate areas meanwhile they can hear/smell each other. We also let the cats explore each other’s areas without confrontation. When we finally let them see each other the female is very scared and always hissing and running away. While the kitten is very playful! He wants to play with her tail and paws and she doesn’t like that. She’s let him come near her but then he wants to pounce or paw at her. I’ve tried distracting them with toys and treats, but the kitten will NOT budge! He won’t even eat if she’s around. All he can do is stare at her. He won’t eat treats, he won’t even play (with a couple exceptions). I don’t know what to do since he keeps chasing her I’m guessing wanting to play but since she hisses and hides I know it’s not welcomed. We keep them separate when they do this and thankfully have enough space where they can take turns on the main floor. It’s been about 5 days that we’ve been attempting. I’m not sure if we’ve rushed the process, they are very different cats but we are not going to get rid of them as they are both so different but so wonderful individually. Any help is appreciated!!!
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you rushed the process. It's only been 5 days you let them already come in direct contact. When you say, that he doesn't eat when she is around or doesn't play, then he isn't ready to meet her yet. They need to meet at a gate for a while for now. Eating & playing while seeing each other, but without direct contact. Only if that works without problem, they can met each other. Also it is very problematic that you kept the kitten separate from other cats since he was 3 weeks till 12 weeks old. That is a highly crucial time for kittens to learn how to communicate with each other & behave respectfully. He never learned it, that's why he behaves so anti-social & abnormal. It isn't normal that he chases her around like that & ignores her, when she says that she doesn't want something. He also needs another kitten of his age to play & learn from. The kitten should be a little older than him, never younger. And it should be a male & a confident kitten. The older cat is too shy & lacks playfulness...so she doesn't fit to the kitten you have. The only way this works, is when he has somebody else to play with, that can keep up with him...like that the older cat has more peace & isn't bothered all the time. Also if you free-feed, meaning the cats have access to food all the time, then don't do that anymore. Free-freeding is very bad for training. 3 meals a day is better. Also treats like dry food or treat-sticks are bad, give high-quality wet food or cooked meat if you want a cat to react properly. Also: Play with both cats at least 3 times a day till they are exhausted & lay on the ground tired. In this tutorial you find many tips on how to get a cat exhausted. Like Agility, many cat-trees etc. Did you watch the whole tutorial? Also Part 2 of this tutorial? In Part 2 you can see how to introduce 2 cats the safest & best way.

My cats eat treats together. The hissing also has stopped. But when one of my cat goes near the other and tries to play fight begins. No one is cornered. But each time they touch each other they both get scared and start fighting. I don't know what to do. It has been 3 weeks since I adopted the second cat. One is male other is female. Both are spayed.

How old are they? Which one was first at home & how long was it solitary (kept without a cat buddy)? How often do you play with both cats per day & with what? Are they tired after the play-sessions? Do they have access to the outdoors? (balcony, secured window, garden etc.)

@@TravelersGarden_dgdr hey. One is 1 year and 5 months. Female. She was the one whom I adopted and was in solitary since she came to me. So almost a year and 2 months. The other one is 1 year who is a male who I adopted 3 weeks back. I do have a balcony but sadly I have to get it netted before I allow them there. I play with both of them atleast twice or thrice a day when they are not sleeping and when I see them becoming active and running around.
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 4 жыл бұрын
That there are difficulties with this combination isn't unusual. Here is why: - The female was solitary for her whole childhood & beyond. Cats that are kept solitary develop anti-social behaviors towards their own species due to being isolated from their own species. They forget how to communicate & understand their own species. Especially when they are kept solitary since they were kittens, their have severe mental issues in that area. One of the reasons why kittens (& cats) should never be kept solitary. The question would be if the male was solitary as well...which would make it even more difficult. Cats like that still can learn "to be cats" again, but it takes time & enough help from the owner. - Males play more rough than females & tend to scare females with their very direct approach & a lot of body contact while playing. This can only be solved by playing with the male *a lot* multiple times a day till the male is exhausted & simply has barely any strength/energy left to annoy the female. He surely will still try to play with her, but his lack of energy will make his play way less intense & scary for the female. Which is very important. I had the same problem with my male & female years ago. Of course it depends on how much energy a cat has, but with my male, only playing didn't cut it. He needed the outdoors to be happy. Meaning going on walks multiple times a week. (my female tagged along as well, which was very good for her confidence). So, maybe you should think about trying that, if the playing doesn't bring the results you want. If you don't want to do that, then offer at least the balcony as quickly as possible. Cats needs fresh air & direct sunlight daily to be happy. I also think they still need to be separated for certain parts of the day, especially at night or when you're not at home. Only let them together, when you play with them, they eat or they want to sleep. The moment they get active & you have no time to redirect them, separate them for now. What toys do you use? I hope you don't use a laser-pointer, because they increase frustration, which can cause aggression, restless behavior etc. I recommend using a stick/wand with feathers or similar. Also Agility is a really good way to exhaust a cat quickly. Furthermore I recommend more mental stimuli like trick-training, intelligence puzzles & definitely giving access to the outdoors. If you can, then I recommend getting also a third cat...another male (a kitten, definitely not an adult). Then the 2 males can play rough with each other & won't bother the female with their boyish behavior. You can get peace at home without the third cat (as I did), but I can definitely say, that it's still not ideal for the male. He will be missing playing with somebody, who is just like him, his whole life. Just like my male did. Though recently things changed & his sister died of cancer. Since then he is living with 2 new kittens. One is a male, the other is a female. And it became clear, that he missed wrestling with another male the whole time. (Of course it's always friendly & not fighting.)

You have a lovely soothing voice, almost ASMR, but you need a mask over your microphone to prevent the breath thumping and causing distortion. I'm no sound engineer, but that's my advice. Love your channel.

Thank you very much! :) Yes, I agree with the microphone problem...it is bugging me for a long time as well. I bought a while ago a thing that you can put infront of the microphone (a round disc out of some fabric) that should prevent distortions due to breath, but I don`t think it does the job good enough. Not sure if I used it in this video already or later...but even in my newest tutorials there is a problem...it`s less than before, but still exists. I hope I`ll find a proper solution for that soon. Funnily enough he wears a harness to the vet & likes it. I will also see to improve the confidence of the targeted cat. Thank you! Have a long way to go. i love your video! one of my recently adopted cats is always a food thief! he seems to have a never ending stomach and eats his food faster than i can empty the can, haha. i have to feed my cats in different rooms and as soon as i open the door, he darts in and checks if there's any leftovers from the other cat. I'm trying to figure out how to give them both treats while next to one another without my food obsessed cat always pushing the other out of the way because then i can implement some of your other techniques. they fight a lot :(
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The behavior of the food obsessed cat doesn`t seem normal to me...something is going on there. Did you check that cat for hyperthyroidism? Cats with that illness eat like crazy but never seem to gain weight. Diagnosis is done with big blood test at the vet. Another symptom of hyperthyroidism is aggression (towards other cats or humans). The cat could also have intestinal parasites (worms, giardia etc.)...which can cause the same symptoms. Diagnosis is done per stool test (collect poop for 3 days), bring to vet...he will send it to a laboratory. (You need to tell the vet what you want to be tested.) So, first I recommend checking the health of the cat. If health issues are ruled out, then you should take a look at the food, you`re feeding. Food with not enough meat content can often cause crazy eating behaviors...because they isn`t enough animal protein, fat etc. in the food. Usually the case with food that has grain, rice, soy or similar in it. But also any type of fish flavors can cause obsessive behavior. So, what kind of food do you feed? (Brand, Flavors, Dry or Wet food?) Also how often a day do you feed? (Feeding not enough meals per day, can cause negative behavior too).

Hi, good advice. I have 7 cats, when there was 6 they got along fine and then I fostered 2 brother cats and my black cat started bullying the 2 foster brothers and then the 2 foster brothers ganged up against him and started bullying him and he was always stressed and scared. Round about the same time as having the 2 foster cats I then got another cat but he was also supposed to only stay for a bit but then he had no home so I decided to keep him. He is a very vocal cat and after the 2 foster cats went back to their home my black cat started relaxing but then a month or 2 later he just started to get into fights with the vocal cat and now it is at the point where I have to always have them in separate rooms because they had a serious fight and I can see the black cat is always on edge even though he's the one bulling the new cat. I think he was traumatized by the two foster cats and somehow associates the new cat with them. I will try get more cat things and will move the litter trays as that was definitely a trigger point but the problem is I can't allow them outside at the same time as they could kill each other and opening and closing doors is also a stress for my cats. Do you suggest the first starting point to be getting more cat trees etc and moving litter boxes plus try feeding them nice things on opposite sides of a glass door? The black cat gets so stressed that he keeps getting bladder blockages which is dangerous so I need to urgently get peace back in the home. I also have a new dog in the house which I think adds to the stress.

I have a video about how to introduce cats in detail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fK5pZJB1ybiUmXU.html Combinate that tutorial with the current tutorial & then you have all the tips you need. I also have 2 videos about 2 introduction with new cats, there you can see live, what I do etc: kzfaq.info/sun/PLz2-JM3q5bi62nhJ6rABidyRFYIv_479r Video Number 3 & 4 in this playlist. Make sure, that you have a lot of things like cat-trees & shelves, where the cats can climb up...away from the dogs. Ideally they should be able to navigate the whole rooms without needing to trust the floor, especially important rooms like bedroom & living room. Also the hallway, because it's usually narrow in hallways, which adds to the stress. Consider even elevating the litter-boxes, if the dogs distrub the cats while using that.

How often a day do you play with them & what kind of games? 5. How many big cat-trees & other cat stuff do you have? 6. Do they have access to the outdoors like a balcony, backyard, do you walk them on a leash or off leash, are they outdoor cats etc? 7. Are there outdoor cats around your home & do your cats see them out of the window etc? If yes, how do they react? 8. Are there other pets at your home? 9. Do you have small children or often visitors? 10. How long is this being going on? When was the first fight etc. So, you need to give every detail about what you tried & for how long etc.

Thanks so much for this video. My two litter mate sisters are fighting and nervous for the last 2 weeks after a neighborhood cat came up to our screen door. It was really horrible and scary to see, and I definitely made things worse by freaking out. They were both very aggressive, with neither trying to hide or run away. We separated them immediately and tried to bring them back together a few times, but they fought terribly and made the most horrible yowling sounds, it happened maybe 4 times over the next few days and was so disturbing. Its now been about 2 weeks. We currently have them eating 4 times a day maybe 6 feet from each other with the blanket raised so they can see each other, but I am so terrified that something bad will happen I am having trouble moving forward. That first day I was so upset I cried for hours. I was in the process of training them to walk on a harness, and now it feels like not only will that never happen, they may never get along again. I am horrified at the idea of re-homing one of them, they are like my children. How do you get over the fear in order to progress? I am considering hiring a behaviorist, though it will be difficult to pay for. Also, where did you get your door gate from? We are using triple stacked baby gates because that was all we could find, but not only are they not very effective, they are a massive hassle to get in and out of. Anything that might reduce the horror and frustration of this situation would be appreciated. Thanks so much again for this informative video and all of your content. You are an awesome pet parent.

Thank you, glad you liked it. How old are they? Are they castrated? I got the door gate on Amazon. It's easy to walk in & out, but it's not very high (1m). I didn't find a door gate yet, that covers the whole door area. First I think you need to make sure, that never ever another outdoor cat will come up to your screen door. Fence your garden if necessary. If you get a proper door gate, then you don't have to be afraid of something happening. They can't hurt each other through that. Take it slow (as shown in my tutorial about introducing 2 cats / multi-cat household Part 2) & be patient. Play a lot every single day with both cats, till they are exhausted. Makes sure to rub your scent (with a t-shirt you had on a day) on both cats every day. Make territory swapping every day, so they get used to each others smell again etc (they shouldn't see each other during that). So, everything I show in my tutorial Part 2. If that worked out, you can move to Part 1...so this current video. And make sure to do things that calm you down. Like taking walks in nature, hearing calming music etc. Being tense & afraid doesn't help yourself nor your cats. I know it's not easy but try. Recently I introduced a Bengal Kitten to my 2 other cats. She was quite difficult & showed aggression. I filmed the whole progress very day. Maybe that will help you. There you can also see my set-up (door gate, separate room etc.). I didn't had to be so careful, since my 2 resident cats aren't aggressive...so you would need to start first with a blanket on the door gate. (Just as explained in my tutorial Part 2...I would say you should do every single step I show in that video. In the end I say, that in some cases not all steps are important...but in your case all steps are important, since you have a difficult case & both cats show aggression.) Another tip: There is surely some difference in both cats & their aggression. I doubt they are exactly the same intensity. One of them surely is more prone to attack first. So, put your effort first mostly on the cat that is the worst. If you can calm it a little bit down, concentrate on the less worse. Of course you should take care of both, but when letting them meet at the door gate, make sure to stay on the side of the worst cat. (if you are alone...if you have help, of course there can be somebody of each side). Also make sure that the worst cat plays really every day till it is exhausted...then it will have less strength & will to fight. About walking the cats: If at some point you want to do that or able to do that, please never ever walk them, where they could meet outdoor cats. Otherwise you will have a scene just like before. Go into calm nature only, where definitely no outdoor cats roam.

P.S.: About hiring some behaviorist...I think it would be waste of money. And you never know, if their tips are good or nonsense. They may just try to get your money or sell you some calming medication or something. Or they may simply say, that nothing can be done (because they simply don't know the solution) & you loose your motivation completely. You can achieve your goal by yourself. The only person that is worth paying for would be Jackson Galaxy (he has a tv series called "my cat from hell", I recommend watching it...he helps even highly aggressive cats...there were even cases basically exactly like yours!). He knows what he is doing. But I doubt that he is for hire. And you don't even need to hire him. Just watch the tv series, if possible every single episode & you will learn quickly the pattern how he solves problems. It's quite simple. His tips helped me a lot as well. Though I had to do more than he recommends. My cats needed Agility e.g., because playing with toys didn't to the trick enough & they needed walks in nature... So, he isn't perfect either, but he is a very good source of knowledge.

@@TravelersGarden_dgdr Thanks so much for the advice. They are 5 years old and were both spayed before I brought them home. I cannot do anything with my yard structurally unfortunately because I live in a rental, but I have set up automatic motion sense air guns outside and I have not seen the cat again. We plan to move out of this house when the lease ends, and I will make sure we move into a place on an upper floor so we will not have to worry about this again. I think I will just have to buy a screen door to install in the mean time, because what we are doing now is very inconvenient and is making things even harder. Unfortunately, one cat has to stay sometimes in a small bathroom. This house is just very badly situated for this process, I can't imagine a worse place for this to have happened. Luckily there are two of us, so we can both play with one cat until she is exhausted. It seems to have worked well tonight at least, they are both calm. They are eating calmly near one another and in view, and I've been told 2 weeks is not that long for this process, so maybe things will be fine. I will be diligent about the outdoor cat until we can move. Do you think the move will make things worse or better? I worry about that a bit.

Was happy to help. When you do the introduction, can you put one e.g. in a bedroom or living room & the other into the hallway or something. (door gate between of course) After training you can put the one in the hallway back into a proper territory/room. I wouldn't put a cat into a small bathroom...not even temporary. It's very confined & most likely will increase stress. Good that the playing showed effect. Moving will make everything better, if there isn't any possibility of outdoor cats meeting your cats at windows etc. And then you will never have to worry about this happening again either.

@@TravelersGarden_dgdr Hello again. I finally broke down and hired a behaviorist, it was absolutely a waste of money. She had us stop viewing sessions for over 2 weeks until I could do a Skype consultation, which I worry set us back a bit. It has now been almost 2 months since the initial incident. We have installed a screen door and covered it with felt, we do clicker training sessions while allowing them to view each other. We have not had them in the same room together yet. We are able to have them ~2 feet apart during the clicker training over the last few days.. I am very very scared to put them in the same room, but I know it must happen if they are ever going to get along again. The screen door makes the view of each other rather dark because of the wiring across it. Will they react differently without the screen there? How do I know when it is time? Should I continue clicker training for a while to see if anything bad happens?

I tried my best efforts so far to socialize during lunchtime so they see each other & get along. Senior cat sleep at home in separate room at night, the younger cat everyday goes out at night comes in early morning & sleeps a while, comes home only for meals. My cat mittens hasn't ever really liked other cats, but we ended up rescuing a kitten. We found Deana outside our house in a tree, she had no momma and was extremely thin and sickly, so we took her in. It's been about half a year since we found her, and we were hoping they'd start to get along, but they never did. We had another cat before, he and Mittens got along okay, but they still got into scuffles. When we gave him to a close friend, Mittens became very vocal and happy, (which was surprising because she never meowed, and hated everyone but me) so that was really great, but when Deana came in, she got really crabby. She growls and hisses a LOT. I want them to get along, but Mittens literally hates other cats with a passion.

I've been thinking about the using of a firm voice to stop my cat from being mean to his brother. It actually works for cat 2. I can firmly tell him to leave his brother alone and he will. But for cat 1... he recently went through non-recognition aggression to cat 2. He was hissing, growling, and swatting at him. They are doing much better, but there are still little hissing moments if he does a nose sniff with cat 2 or following them bathing one another and cat 2 resumes cleaning himself (very odd one to me; maybe he's mad he doesn't get the "resource" of cat 2 bathing him?). I'm worried that scolding might make it worse in his case, so I haven't been. It feels like he felt threatened by cat 2 upon returning from the vet, lost territory due to having to separate them for a week, and if I use a firm voice, it might confirm that he was right to feel threatened. I'm not sure, but I might test the waters now that it's dying down a bit. Cat 2 looks so sad when he gets hissed at for no reason. We have a feliway diffuser plugged in, are increasing resources in the apartment, and I have a calming supplement I've been trying for him.

I recommend to watch my tutorial & see what things could be the causes for the stress between your cats & then using the solutions presented in the tutorial. Usually cats won`t fight because of a vet visit or not seeing each other for a week, if there were no problems prior. Such small changes shouldn`t make them suddenly "hate" each other. So, in my experience cats only react so sensitive to stuff like that, if there were problems prior. Meaning there was some kind of stress or tension on regular basis (e.g. disagreements or even small fights, boredom, lack of resources, lack of exercise, lack of access to the outdoors etc.)....and the vet visit etc was just the last straw to make everything go downhill. So, I think there needs to be more than adding resources (big cat trees, cat walk etc). There needs to be much more exercise, at least 3 times a day till they are tired. Never use laser pointer...only real toys (that can be caught/chewed on etc) or food for play. Also access to the outdoors needs to be there too....minimum a secured window (with a cat net), so it can be opened completely...like a miniature balcony. I have a tutorial on a how to build something like that for around 20 bucks. There might be more things that cause a problem....for more info watch tutorial. So, I recommend not to see the vet visit etc as the only cause of the fights, just as the last straw. There were most likely other causes/problems going on even before that...and those problems need to be identified & solved. Otherwise you will have fights again after every vet visit or small changes...or in general. Scolding a cat won`t really solve anything...you just stop it in the moment, but it will happen again & again in the future. Also scolding a cat can make it more frustrated/aggressive, depending on how you scold them. Yes, you should go between cats if they fight & you can say "stop!" or something in a serious/firm tone etc...but never scream/be loud or angry. After breaking up a fight, you need to make them friends again (very important!)...which I explain in the tutorial (how to do that in detail). Meaning doing positive activities with them together to bond them in a positive way (as soon as possible after the fight, after they calmed down from it...e.g. after 5min or more). If you don´t do that, they will associate each other only with the scolding/negative stuff....and may dislike each other more. And you need to play with them after that too, so they can release their negative feelings/tension in a positive way. (Fights, scolding or simply boredom makes cats tense...so, you need to give them release from that...otherwise it will build up & they will lash out again.) Calming supplements, feliway diffusers etc won`t solve anything. They either won`t work at all or simply produce an illusion of peace between the cats. Cats aren`t really happy or friends with each other, if they are under the influence of calming medications which suppress their true feelings. You need to find all causes of the fights & solve them. That`s the only way to get true peace & friendship between the cats. That requires enriching their life more (more mental & physical exercise etc) & other stuff....more info in the tutorial. Best Regards, Rita

Around 3 years ago, we brought home a 1-2 year old female cat and we already had a 3-4 year old female cat living with us (both adopted). We had little experience with cats in general (never had any prior) and wedidnt know how to properly introduce themselves. At first, the new cat seemed friendly (she previosly had lived with 2 of her own kittens for months) and meowed at the other. But the other cat being nervous hissed at her. They mever got along too well. The younger cat chases my older cat several times a week and bullies her (the older one is smaller and weaker). We don't know how to stop them because when we intervene the youngest continues the chase further. Around a week or two the youngest scratched my older's nose. Today it happened the other way around but again, the bully started the fight. We have recently brought another female cat and I'm afraid she will be violent too. (We didnt ask for cats btw, they just came from the streets to our house and we couldnt leave them or give them away. We love them).

Are all the cats castrated? What is your daily routine? (Feeding times, playing times etc. Do you free-feed?) Do they have access to the outdoors? The older cat must live in a very stressful & unhappy situation...she will get sick at some point due to all that stress, if she isn't already. Those cats should be separated immediately & re-introduced correctly. (Part 2 of this Tutorial Series) After the re-introduction, don't let them be together alone for a couple of weeks till there are absolutely no fights between them, when you are around. Separate also at night. Play with the younger one more. At least 3 times a day & till she is completely tired. And of course also with the older one...she needs play to get more confident. Of course no other cat should interfere when she is playing. Makes sure all eat calmly & nobody steals food from the other. Well, intervene in a way, that the cat takes you seriously..since she doesn't. Grab her immediately (before she attacks!) & put her into a room (like your bedroom e.g.) & close to door. Let her sit there alone for at least 30min. Ignore any meowing completely. Only open the door again, when she is quiet. She will learn that her behavior only brings her solitude. It also will calm her down & take her mind of attacking the older one. If she does attack the older one after that immediately again, then put her back into the room & do the same thing. But this time, before letting her out of the room, play with her till she is completely exhausted. A tired cat doesn't have the strength to attack anything. Another way would be to grab a toy quickly & redirect her attacking mood towards the toy/ playing with her. That would be a nicer & more productive way of solving the situation. But if that doesn't work, put her into a room for a time out. (Of course in the room should be a litter box.) Other than that, try out all the other tips listed in the video. If after 6 months of trying all the tips, you don't have a significant positive progress between the cats, then you should think of re-homing the younger one. Since the older one lives already way too long in that terrible situation & she shouldn't have to live with that much longer....and definitely not the rest of her life. And frankly...bringing a 3rd cat into your home (especially another female!), when your 2 current cats don't get along, isn't a good idea. It will just add to the stress & may make things even worse. Especially since you don't know if the 3rd cat is even social. I know it might not be easy, but I recommend searching another home for the 3rd cat. The only exception would be, if the 3rd cat is still a kitten under 6 months of age.

I’m so glad I watched this we got our cats at 6 weeks old and now they are at least 10 weeks old they’ve been fighting sense we got them and now it’s getting out of hand. They fight almost all day my mom always says don’t get involved cause it adds more aggression but either way they are aggressive towards us I’m gonna try this thanks for the video this helped. 😸💓

I hope you will resolve the issue soon. Please always intervene if there is a fight. Being passive doesn't do anything good...the cats will continue fighting. They will get even worse. You must always intervene. Make sure to play with them every day...just as said in the tutorial.

That sounds like a very serious thing. Always separate the cats when you leave the house for now. And depending on how much they fight, when you are at home, you may need to separate them completely & re-introduce them slowly again. How old are they? Did you go with both cats to the vet? Maybe one of the cats is sick...since that can cause sudden aggression or fear. The vet needs to do a big blood test with kidney, liver & thyroid values. Check also teeth & heart. Did you notice any other behavioral changes in the cats? What is your daily routine with the cats? How often a day do you play with them & with what? Are they indoor or outdoor cats?

both my cats are outdoor/indoor cats. They go out during the day and come back in before dusk. I don't play with them much because i figure they get their exercise outdoors a lot, but now i'm thinking I should play with them indoors as well before bed time. I need better toys, however. They don't seem to care much for their current ones. And also, i need to catify my bedroom. Both sleep with me in the same room as I don't have more space than that to give them each a room.

Yes, even cats that go outdoors need play. It's not only physical exercise, it's also the best way to bond with your cats & simply giving them attention. If they are food-driven you can do Agility with them. Is the best, when cats don't react to toys much. Also you can try valerian toys...usually have big effect on cats.

I rescued a kitten, Keo (of a stray cat, Neo, whom I had been feeding for a long time) in 2021. Now, by 2022, both Keo and Neo are adults, spay/neutered and of different genders. Neo who was a stray cat (and mother of Keo) wants to stay indoors but since she had abandoned Keo a year ago, she doesn't seem to remember him or get along with him. Any tips on how to revive some friendship b/w the mother-kitten duo would be helpful!

Thank you for this very informative video. I’m struggling. I am not experienced with cats and wish I had done a lot more research before getting them both....I have a 4 month old male kitten (who will be neutered soon) and have just introduced a 2 month old female. He does not like her. And she doesn’t like the dog. I originally had shut the male out of the main living area but discovered he doesn’t like that because he has sprayed and soiled in a couple of other places (I know that this is him letting her know that it’s his space) so since then I have put her in a dog crate(she has water and litter box and bed and toys, and I only leave her in there for a couple of hours at a time and over night ) in the main living area so it allows him to still roam the house as before. He seems happier but I am stressed out. He isn’t covering his poo in the litter tray now either which stinks. They take turns and play together but I can tell it’s slightly one sided and he is not happy. I wish I hadn’t for the other kitten now but want to be able to live altogether happy. Please any help would be gratefully received. 😩👍🏽

Glad you liked the video. I would need more information an the whole situation: 1. How old was the male kitten, when you got him? 2. How long do you have the female now? And how did you to the introduction? 3. What kind of dog do you have, how old is it & how does it behave around the kittens? 4. How often do you play with the kittens? And with what? 5. How big is your home? 6. How many cat-trees do you have? 7. How exactly are the plays between the cat? Is somebody bullying the other or what exactly is going wrong? 6. What do you feed them & how often a day? Tips I can give you with the current info is following: 1. Don't put a cat/kitten into a cage. A crate is nothing different than a cage. You can cause frustration & depression when locking up a cat in such a small space. Instead of putting the kitten into a cage, you need to put it in a separate room with all the necessary cat stuff. 2. You need to make them associate each other with positive things. Food e.g., look into my video for the tips for that topic. 3. That your male is doing his business outside the litter-box has really nothing to do with marking his territory. He is way too small to understand such behavior. His behavior came from the simple fact, that he got suddenly locked away from the main living area. He was there first, then the new kitten came & he was pushed aside...that's how he saw it. That made him depressed, frustrated & lose his confidence in himself, in his home & his owner. And that's why he did his business outside the litter-box. He felt neglected, insecure & unhappy. When doing an introduction the first cat should never lose anything, on the contrary should get more (more attention, more play etc.). The new cat needs to be separated in a room. That he now doesn't cover his poop could be simply stress. Maybe the female is bullying him at the litter-box? Or it's the general situation. I would say it really weird how he reacts. Kittens usually become friends in just a couple of days, if an introduction is done right. I have the "suspicion" that he was solitary for too long (without other cat) and/or taken away from his cat mom too early. Which caused already the beginning of anti-social mental disorder towards his species. This can be corrected but it takes more time. I have that "suspicion" because your female kitten is indeed way too young. Kittens should only be taken away with 3 months or older. Never younger. Taken too young can cause a variety of behavioral problems. Also neuter them with 5-6 months and do both on the same day. That's important, because if you bring one from the vet neutered, they will smell like the vet & that can cause aggression from the cat at home. If you take both, both will smell like the vet & there will be no problems. Neutering younger than 5-6 months isn't necessary.

Thank you for the tutorial. We adopted a cat and before fixing her we wanted her give birth once. She has 3 kittens, one of them is male. We want to keep the male one and find homes to the other two. However, after 5 months from the birth the mother suddenly started to show aggression, especially to her male child. We live in a house with garden and all them are out-going cats. The mother started to come just for eating and sleeping out even some of the nights. Just don't know what happened and what to do. I am so sorry both for the mother and the kittens.

Glad you liked it. Well, it is normal that mothers will chase away their kittens, when they become 5-6 months of age...that age kittens start to be able to reproduce themselves. So, they aren`t children anymore. Daughters can be seen as rivals for territory, resources & therefore reproduction. Sometimes mothers & daughters will raise litters together, but only if the characters fit & the daughter show submissiveness. (Some daughters will try to dominate their mothers & that causes fights.) Some mothers however simply won`t accept any female rivals in their territory, because their drive to reproduce in best conditions (without rivals) is more important to them. When it comes to sons, they will be chased away by their mother quite aggressively without exception. This is an instinct to prevent incest, since sons will try to mate with their mother. Some sons can be very forceful & even aggressive to get what they want. The only way you can save the relationship between the cats is by removing the reproduction part of the situation, since that is the cause of all of this. Meaning you need to neuter all cats asap. The mother & all her kittens. Kittens should be neutered with 5-6 months of age anyway. If you don`t do that, the mother will get more & more aggressive, especially to her son. Which can lead to the kittens not coming home anymore & search a new territory. Or the mother decides to search for a new territory. So, you could lose either the mother or the kittens. If you decide to neuter all of the cats, but do it too late, it`s also bad. Because every fight damages their relationship more & more. And at some point, the damage is so severe, that even after neutering the cats, they won`t get along & will constantly fight each other. Too many bad memories & distrust. So, I really recommend to act quickly.
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 2 жыл бұрын
P.S.: As a tip: It`s not enough to only neuter the mother. Since if the son stays intact, he will still sexually harass his neutered mother. And the daughters will try to dominate their neutered mother, because a neutered female is lower in rank than an intact female. In that case, the mother most likely will run away from home. And very important: The son can also try to mate with his sisters. So, it´s a really bad situation right now.

I've had my kitten for a week and a half now, mostly things are going well although the older cat is still a bit stressed. They play chase together nicely, can eat from the same bowl, and have slept on the same couch together. The older cat has shown signs of wanting to groom the kitten also. The issue is my bed, my older cat gets very upset when the kitten is there. She will growl and this morning peed on the couch, I guess she's feeling her territory is threatened in there. I have another cat tree ordered for my lounge and am thinking about some shelving for my room if this might help them.

Yes, I guess she feels still insecure about the new family member. Makes sure to play with the kitten & the older cat every single day till they are tired. Give extra attention to the older cat (more than you usually do) & always feed it first (make sure, the kitten doesn't go close to the bowl of the older cat)...that will make it more calm & reassure it, that it's still a valid member of the family. When she calmed down & things work out great & you can stop to "prefer" the older cat & treat both cats the same. That's what I did, when I introduced my 2 new kittens (Burmese & Bengal) to my 11 Year old Siamese. They are all friends now. And of course I'm using all the other tips in my tutorial as well. My 2 kittens get walked in nature as well (with my older Siamese together)...them being only indoors makes them restless. You could also consider getting a second kitten, if your older cat can't keep up with the high energy of the kitten. I had to take that step, because my older Siamese was just too calm for my first new kitten (Burmese)...that's why I got a Bengal kitten quickly.

Glad my tutorial was helpful. I think you need to separate them...their fights are too serious to keep them together. Chasing, growling, being terrified etc...those are very bad signs. That is too much stress. They need to re-introduced, I have a tutorial how to do that step by step. Every single fight between the cats will make their relationship more destroyed...so, this needs to be prevented by re-introducing slowly & after that worked, only keeping them together with supervision. *Never* leave them together unsupervised till you are 100% sure they are good friends...that may take weeks. Here my tutorial about how to introduce cats slowly (In Playlist Video No: 2): kzfaq.info/sun/PLz2-JM3q5bi62nhJ6rABidyRFYIv_479r You can also find in this playlist 2 videos about Live Introductions of my 3 cats. My Siamese, Burmese & Bengal. There you can see live the steps I did, what I did to prevent fights, how much cats behaved etc. Also: Was the feral cat outdoors the whole time & only now being kept indoors? Does the feral cat still have access to the outdoors or is only indoors now? If the feral cat is only indoors now, that`s bad...a cat that was once used to the outdoors can`t be made into an indoor cat without any access to the outdoors...they will get very unhappy & aggressive. They need the very least a backyard or something...

so.. i recently adopted a spayed female cat (4 yrs) to bring home to our spayed female cat (1 yr) and i went through the entire introduction process. they can sit next to each other and eat their food no problem. my younger cat is constantly chasing the older cat and purring and pawing at her. i don't think it is aggressive as sometimes she "chirps" and constantly tries to play with the toys lying around if the older cat does not play back. the older cat will often times try to go under a chair or behind something to get away but still observe. she will play with me when i use teaser toys and was very playful in the shelter... the younger cat will back off when the older cat paws at her and they often times lay near each other (within 1-5 ft of each other) on the floor. is this okay? what can i do to promote them to play together? is the younger cat bullying her??
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 2 жыл бұрын
Play with the younger more, so she doesn`t annoy the older so much. (at least 2-3 times as a daily routine.) Also, redirect the young one with toys/play, if she harasses the older one. It doesn`t matter if the young one only wants to play...if the older one feels harassed (which she does, because she hides behind or under stuff), then something needs to be done...because the old one may snap at some point (& do more than just pawing). If you play with the young one more, it will be happier as well...because getting rejected from the older one too much, can result in frustration as well (which can lead to mobbing). The young one needs more play than the older one can or wants to give...so you need to fulfill that part & play with the younger one as much as it needs to be happy. Best Regards, Rita

Thanks for the information. Sadly I saw this video late and we already made all possible mistakes. Our two cats Maui and Harry were rescued from the street. Maui is 2 years old, did not grow up with cats and is with us from day one. Harry is 6 months old. Both are castrated. Harry, a puppy full of energy and seems to be very distressed to Maui. He seems to be really depressed. Maui Redhead, aggressive and evil to strangers, has never been around cats and only goes out on the porch. Home today is quite a nightmare. When they're awake, Maui doesn't let Harry get close to him. Blowing on him and hurting him. I always get in the way, but he is quite aggressive and very angry with me. We are carefulWe make sure to play with the little one. Maui is not interested at all. They have food all the time in a regular place individually, Harry comes with the habits of a street so he steals Maui many times. Of course I take him and Maui gives up most of the time ... At night they sleep on the same couch on both sides, or in separate rooms we have been like that for three months. Didn't know cats can be taken out for a walk !!! Promise to implement this advice .. I'd love to get more advice from you if there is. Thanks for listening so far to your amazing thetails and sounds like you too. Regards Esti⁦❤️⁩

Hi! Just found your video and I'm learning a lot, thanks! I have a male cat who is 18 months old and last month I adopted a female kitten. She is 6 months old now. Both have been fixed at young age. We brought her in and made a lot of steps for 2 weeks to introduce them. The older male cat stoped using his litter box since she arrived and now only uses "her" litter box. I don't know if it's a good sign or not. What I do know is that he chases her around the house, jumps/mounts at her and bites her neck. Then they start the fight and although I've never seen any blood, I do see some fur flying, mainly his fur (he is black and she is white). I've tried to take him outdoor but I live in a very chaotic city (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) with many strayed dogs and cats and I'm afraid. He is a very, very scared cat who is afraid of anything, anyone. The worst thing is that he just won't play. I've tried many toys and even food treats and it seems nothing gets him excited for more than 2 minutes so my guess is that he's bored to death and so he chases the kitten around. When that happens I correct his behavior by saying a firm "NO" for a couple of times and most of the time he obeys but sometimes he ignores me and the chasing and fighting go on. I ALWAYS interrupt them 'cause I get very scared but I've had some vets saying I should relax and let them deal with each other for a while in order for them to learn their limits. I just don't know what to do anymore. Whenever I see him preparing himself to chase her, I try to interrupt and if they end up fighting, I put him alone in a room. Am I wrong for doing this? People say you shouldn't punish the car and I don't know he perceives this as a punishment. (I'm so so sorry for the long text, but I felt the need to give you some context)
@milacn
@milacn 3 жыл бұрын
Also, they lick each other and bump noses sometimes. I've already doubt if they were really fighting after all since they seem to like each other. But when they're fighting (I guess) she screams a lot and growls at him. She never chases him while he does that many times so my guess is that if it was really just play and fun they would switch places in the chasing.

You should separate them immediately. They aren't ready to share the same area. It's very clear, that the previous introduction failed. You need to do it again & this time correctly. i have a tutorial how it's done. With a door gate etc. Yes, if he doesn't play, he is bored. No, PLEASE do not listen to the vet or other people saying that you shouldn't do anything. The female has absolutely no chance against a male. Not only can he physically harm her seriously, he is tormenting her mentally as well. Just imagine being a female locked up with a male, who chases you around, jumps on you, hurting you every single day & the one person that could help you, just stands around & does nothing. You would feel betrayed & helpless. Protect your female, she needs you. The male is treating the female like prey....this is not play, this is not dominance...so this will NOT resolve itself by not interfering. He could kill her one day. I'm not joking. So, separate them, introduce them correctly & make that male tired with play every single day...otherwise this won't work. Find food that he loves & do agility with him, if he doesn't react to toys. Don't do free feeding (dry food always in bowl), only fixed meal times. And don't feed dry food in general, use high-quality wet food. Buy plenty of big cat-trees, make sure there is access to the outdoors (at least window with net for fresh air & direct sunlight). If you don't want to walk him, buy a pet backpack or similar & put him in there & simply carry him every day around the city. That will keep him busy. In the backpack he is safe. First do only 10min & then slowly increase to about 20-30min. (Not longer than that). Redirect with food to keep him calm. If you can't make him tired, so he won't terrorize the female....then you should find a new home for the female. She won't be happy in a home, where she is bullied & hurt every day. So, try to do your best now to change the situation, maybe then there is a chance. If not, then as I said...find the female a better home.
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 3 жыл бұрын
Just seen your second comment. Growling, hissing, screaming, chasing done by only one cat are clear signs of a serious fight. The female is terrified...she is literally screaming out of fear & pain. And he doesn't care....on the contrary, he is most likely loving it when she screams...just like a predator hearing the prey scream. So, this in not play , this is bullying or even hunting & it will get worse, if you don't make the male tired with play & teach him to not treat the female like that. But mostly him being tired & happy is the key for peace.

You need to separate them into different rooms & re-introcude them with a door gate. How to do that is shown in my tutorial part 2. Then if that`s done, you can move to part 1 (this video) & follow the instructions. All the reasons for fighting are listed in this video...go through the list & see what could be the cause...if you don`t know, try to change things & see if it gets better. E.g. playing with both 3 times a day & making especially the aggression tired with play. Other things you can try, are shown in this video.

He stocks her around the house and she is constantly hissing at him. Recently he has started fighting her and its getting bad. I know you said exercise is a good thing for him, but he is LAZY! You have the same situation like I had in the past. Your male is bored & frustrated with his life, that's why he releases that onto the weakest member in your home. The solution is clear: You need you provide a better life for him, that makes him happy. Just like I had to do with my male. A cat is never "lazy", they are predators. They love hunting & exploring. Cats that don't have motivation are either sick, depressed or everything that is provided is simply boring. Try different toys. And if toys don't work, use food. There is basically no cat in the world, that doesn't like to eat. The only reasons why a cat won't work for food is following: - Boring/ not tasty food like dry food or similar - Free-feeding makes food boring in general & is bad for cats. - The playing with food-motivation wasn't done before feeding time, meaning the cat wasn't hungry - The cat is sick. - The cat is highly depressed & even lost the joy of eating. But usually that can be dealt with, when trying new foods & playing with food-motivation before feeding time...meaning when the cat is hungry. And just do all the other tips I list in the video. Not sure what the mtv show daria is to be honest. I don't watch tv. But again, he isn't lazy because that's his character, but he has reasons for that. I have a small house and an unsafe yard. I'm going to build a cat safe area outside in the spring. I'll review all your info. Mine don't really fight, they sort of girl fight- chasing, arguing slapping and growling. It's still unacceptable for me and them. I'd love to have them with me at the same time.

Great that you want to build an outdoor area for your cats. I would say, that slapping, chasing & growling is already fighting. It's of course not that serious, but I think too, that any type of negative behavior should be addressed/ the cause should be found & solved.

I'm in the process of introducing my cats, it's been almost a month and this video will be so helpful going through! I would appreciate some advice on what to do next on our current situation though if that's ok! My resident cat, I adopted when he was just 4 months old and has been alone with me for 1 year now. He is male and neutered, shy and playful. He had the whole apartment by himself and hasn't played with other cats since. He hasn't interacted with other cats until recently . The new cat I adopted is 1 year old and also a male. I only got him fixed very recently. He is cuddly confident. I am in the phase with a cat gate between them but they both can eat together comfortably and be side by side with no problem. The first week, I made mistake of getting them face to face together and a fight broke with fur flying and piss. I did more research after that since this is my first time. I slowed down the introduction. My resident cat is still a little cautious with the new cat and gets scared when the new cat tries to smell his butt lol. They fought again this week on the cat tower when the new cat tried to play with my resident cat. The only thing that gets them fighting is when the new cat tries to play or smell my resident cat. So I play with them separately. Now the routine is good but I'm wondering how I can get them playing together? They eat and can sleep together but when it comes to playing near each other, they don't interact with the toys that much and only have a staredown and signs of fight which makes me worried so I separate them immediately. I am so confused on who initates the fight cuz they both tell the same body language.

Glad my video is helpful. I think the new cat is instigating the fights...the old cat is just defending itself & doesn`t trust the new cat. I think you need to play with the new cat more, so he doesn`t bother the old one...it seems he has more energy, so he needs more play. Also I think that the new cat may not want to smell the old cat, but actually threatens to bite him. Dominant/Bully cats tend to get close to the butt or other areas, quite slowly, as if they want to smell, but then they start to fixate & open they mouth slightly...like they want to bite. You can be sure, if it`s friendly or not, when you look at the reaction of the older cat...does he feel threatened & shows it? Well, then it was most likely not nice play or just smelling. Of course the old cat could be simply nervous in general...but still....I recommend interfering if you see the old cat showing signs of discomfort when the new cat approaching him or does anything with him. In general: Giving a shy male another male the same age as a companion wasn`t the best choice. Also the new male was neutered just recently....which makes it even more difficult. The same age & late neutering have the risk of causing fights in ranking order between males....and those fights can be really serious. The new cat should`ve been younger (not older than 5-6 months) & already neutered...and the best choice would`ve been a female. It doesn`t mean that it can`t work out with your 2 males, but I think it will be much more difficult to make them friends & get along in every aspect...and you will need to put much more work into their relationship their whole life. (Compared to if you`ve gotten a more fitting 2nd cat.) So, keep an eye on the new cat & stop him from doing anything the old cat doesn`t like. And don`t let them together without supervision....the moment you leave your home, separate them...only if you`re 100% sure they are good friends when you are around, then you can stop separating them, when you leave. Play with them only with the doorgate between, if there is a risk of fights between them while playing. Make sure you have enough cat stuff (several big cat-trees etc.), so there will be no fights about resources & give them access to the outdoors to some degree at least (window secured with net to open completely e.g....that is the minimum.)....more detail about that in the tutorial & in general about how to get cats to be friends.

Separate them immediately & introduce them again like shown in my tutorial part 2 (link in my other comment). Keep them separated till the introduction is complete, which can take days or even weeks. Don`t let them together, when you leave the house or at night! (Very important!) The rest of the tips are shown in this current video...all reasons for fights are listed & how to solve each problem. Just go through the list, look what is causing the problems/missing in your cats life & change it. If you don`t do that, the female will get abused & hurt for the rest of her life...and that`s not fair to her. The male can also kill her one day...yes, this can happen, I know such cases. So, this is very serious. If your mother doesn`t care about the cats getting along, then find the male a new home. Letting the female getting abused her whole life is not ok.

Great video thank you! I have just adopted a 8 week female kitten to keep my 1 year old female cat (spayed) company. I introduced them slowly following every video and article online and they tolerate each other. However, my older cat will not stop pestering the kitten. She follows the kitten literally everywhere and licks, sniffs and playfully swats her at every possible opportunity. It scares the kitten who will growl and fight back aggressively so I separate them. I thought this may be a sign of bullying from the older cat however they CHOOSE to eat together out of the same bowl (even though I put two separate bowls of food down) share litter boxes (even though they have two separate litter trays each) and sleep on the same bed together. I am really confused whether my cat is bullying the kitten or whether she is just fascinated by the kitten?
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I do a couple of problems with the situation. 1. The kitten is *way too young* to be taken away from it's mom. A kitten should be at least 3 months old, before taking it away. Of course it is very stressed & over-whelmed having to deal with a full-grown adult cat, especially when it is pestering it so much. Growling is a clear sign that the kitten is afraid. It does NOT see it as play what the adult cat is doing. 2. The adult cat is clearly extremely bored & sees the kitten as a new toy. Even if it's not bullying yet, it will turn into bullying & the adult cat can seriously hurt the kitten. So, you need to play with the adult every single day at least 2-3 times til it's completely tired. 3. It's NOT good they eat from the same bowl. It's not because they like each other, it's because they try to steal from each other. It's rivalry & dominance. You need to establish clear rules, that each cat has its own bowl & isn't allowed to touch the bowl of the other. So, you need to be present when they eat every single time & block any cat that breaks the rules & send it back to its own bowl. That's very important. Otherwise this can also turn into fight, when the kitten starts getting older. Sharing the same litter box is ok & normal though. Sleeping together on the same bed is good. It means there is some kind of positive part between them. But that doesn't mean that everything is great between them. If not carefully supervised & regulated, their positive parts can turn bad as well. Speaking from experience. 5. I think the adult cat is liking being not alone anymore, but also frustrated & bored...so, seeing the kitten also as a toy. 6. Frankly it would've been better if you got 2 kittens from the same litter. If possible I recommend getting another kitten (this time at least 3 months old) for your other kitten. It needs somebody to play with that has the same strength & size...the adult cat is just too much for it. And then the adult cat won't only fixate on that 1 kitten.

@@TravelersGarden_dgdr Thank you so much for your reply and advice, I will take all of the points into consideration. It is worth noting that both cats are rescue cats who were dumped and left in bin bags etc by humans so separated from their mum very early on. I hand reared the older cat myself when she was a kitten so she is highly dependant on me and does get hours of play and attention each day. Getting another kitten isn't an option right now, would you recommend splitting the house up in the day so kitten gets half the house and cat gets the other half until kitten is bigger and can play with the cat without being overwhelmed?
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the playing doesn't make her tired...so it's not enough. If she would be tired, she wouldn't have the energy to annoy the kitten so much. What kind of play do you do with your adult cat & is it laying tired on the ground each play-session? How many big cat-trees do you have? Do they have access to the outdoors (secured balcony, backyard or similar)? Hand-reared solitary kitten have usually behavioral issues, especially when it comes to interacting with their own species. You need to teach her to respect the kittens warnings...don't wait till an attack is already happening. Interfere the moment you see the kitten showing any negative signs towards the adult cat. Whipping tail, pinning ears, hissing, growling, going away etc. The adult cat should not be allowed to stalk the kitten, instead it needs to go away. You need to teach the adult cat that. No, it would be terrible for the kitten to be kept completely solitary now. It will get behavioral issues just like the adult cat. But I would definitely separate them, when you leave the house...otherwise you aren't there if a fight breaks out.

@TravelersGarden_dgdr 3 жыл бұрын
Quit free feeding the cats & the food motivation will come. Only fixed meal times, for adults 3 times a day. Free feeding isn't good for cats anyway...mentally I mean. They are hunters...waiting & working for food is their meaning of life & brings them joy. If food is always there, the biggest joy in their life become boring...which can cause a lack of motivation for food. It can also cause in general grumpy or moody behavior. Also try a variety of food & treats. Also special stuff like cooked chicken hearts. You also should try a variety of toys. Toys with feathers, with Valerian, mice toy with synthetic fur etc. Especially Valerian is usually beloved by all cats.

Yes, give it a try. Then you can use their regular food for training. Chicken hearts have a different effect than chicken breast. In my experience chicken breast has the lowest effect. Chicken leg meat has more effect, the same goes for chicken hearts. The meat smells & tastes different. E.g. one of my new cats (Burmese) won't even take a bite from chicken breast...but loves chicken leg meat & hearts. @TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 3 жыл бұрын
You need to castrate the adult cats anyway. They would've gotten into fights sooner or later. Never keep cats intact, that will cause many problems: - Aggression & Overly Sensitive behavior (which will lead to fights) - Intact Males will sexually harass females constantly (intact & castrated females!) - 2 Intact Males will fight for Females in their group...they can even kill each other! - Intact Females that don't breed every year, have a high risk of actually getting sick & die. High risk of an endless heat-cycle, cancer/infections/inflammation of the reproductive organs etc. So, it can actually kill them, if they don't mate yearly. But letting them produce kittens every year wouldn't be morally ok, because there are already way too many homeless cats & kittens. *So, castrating them is an absolute must & should be done as quickly as possible.* The same goes for the kitten, when it reaches 6 months of age. Don't wait longer than that.

I think that the cats should have cat-trees & other stuff (shelves e.g.) where they can climb high up & sleep in the house. Even if they go outdoors. The reason is, that they need to own something in the house to feel confident & calm about their territory, especially when sharing that home with dogs & another cat. They should be at least 2 litter-boxes, so the cats can mark their territory indoors as well...since a litter-box is not only for doing their business, but also marking. Yes, it can happen that a cat will use the litter-box of the other one...it's not a big problem...at least they have the option to choose, if there are 2 litter-boxes. I recommend feeding at a door gate (one on each side). Windows block the smell too much, even if it's a little bit open. Also playing at the door gate, so the cats can get used to the movements of the other cat. Since they are so tense around each other, they should definitely get played with at least 3 times a day till their are tired. How are the cats getting along with the dogs? How many dogs do you have & what kind of breed are they?

Hi, I would really be happy if you have any suggestions. We introduced a new cat to our existing cat 2 months ago. Our cat was very friendly to humans but the first few days she was very scared of the new kitten and hid and hissed. We are past this phase now and she feels more comfortable but she still hisses at the kitten a lot and hits her occasionally. It does seem like they are playing a little, though it is more of a chase around the apartment, the kitten is very bold and tries to engage the first cat in play. The kitten would like to get closer to the first cat but she has grown very careful of her especially since the first cat has been licking her sometimes and when she is finished "washing" the kitten she occasionally hits her and hisses, seemingly out of nowhere. They have never really hurt each other but they are far from friends and would never cuddle or such. Do you have any suggestions on what to do?

Merry Christmas to you as well. The changes you made sound very good. Did you see any difference in their behavior with those changes already or no difference at all? Did the vet make a big blood test with kidney, liver & thyroid values? Did he check the teeth as well? How old are both cats? How often a day do you play with both & with what kind of toys? Are both completely tired after playing? The behavior of the first cat suddenly getting aggressive after grooming the kitten, is a sign of frustration, but also dominance. I think she really is trying to be friendly, but she still has difficulties with it. That could come from her living solitary all those months before the kitten came...she may be simply out of practice in being social to her own species. But it is a good sign, that she actually tried to groom the kitten. Grooming between cats is a way to bond. If a grooming between them occurs again, stay close & observe. Look when the change from friendly to tense to aggression starts & intervene before the aggression starts. When cats groom each other & there is a sudden stop in the grooming behavior, where both seem to wait for something & get tense, then usually the escalation comes. It's very quick, so you don't have much time to prevent it. If the aggression already happened, interfere calmly & get them back together by giving treats next to each other, petting them etc. Encourage them to be next to each other in general, through treats, cuddle, praise etc. It's now quite late, so I will go to bed now. I will respond to your answer tomorrow.

!! I hope you get this but can you please help!! I have two cats; Penny(F9) and Merlin(M4). We've had penny for 8 years and merlin for 4 years. Of course introducing them was the usual growl and uncertainty but then they became best buds for years. Until now. In may, my mother left for florida and was gone for a month. The cats were normal while she was gone. The evening she comes home, they start fighting and Penny is screaming. We assumed it was the usual startle since that has been known to happen rarely when theyre on the patio at night. But an hour later it happened again and escalated. We had to lock Penny up overnight. We tried again in the morning but Merlin pounced and a fight brawled out. We took them both to the vet and found no probable medical cause. But we learned that penny has juvenile arthritis so we have to give her meds. We kept them seperated and swapped over night, then we upgraded to a kennel cage so they could see each other. They showed aggression at first such as growling, hissing, and avoiding, but overtime they were able to be in the same room and sniff each other thru the bars. Things seemed better. After a month we decided to let them be out during the day but not yet over night. At first there was still the occasional sqaure up and hissing but no fights escalated and we would put one away to calm down and then back out. Things were great for maybe a week. They began grooming each other without conflict, playing, and sleeping together all sweet. We had hope things were over. But no. Last week early morning, merlin looked at penny the wrong way and sent her attacking. It got to the point where they were trying to fight through my mother closing the cage. We were so hopeful. But it felt like a relapse. Penny couldnt even stand seeing merlin in the room or in the kennel. One second theyre sniffing thru the bars and then merlin turns around and penny screams at him when he did no threat. We are so confused. I ruled out that they saw one of the feral cats that comes near the house and it was redirected aggression. But even after penny still growled at merlin like she never knew him. She does not show any symptoms of dementia or a cognitive disorder. Merlin has no illness either aside from occasional anal gland scooting. We're at the point where one more fight and we have to place one elsewhere. We're heartbroken and scared. We've been swapping them out every two hours and they seem fine being near each other. But only three days ago penny was growling at him. We even bough Feliway to help but i dont know what improvement looks like thru that product. This week its been the same; sniffing each other thru the bars, reaching out and touching the other thru the bars, and penny sleeping next to the kennel on a makeshift cat bed. Weve been doing all reintroduction methods and conditioning with treats for good behavior. But my parents are impatient and they dont want to keep doing this routine. My mom is ready to try letting them out again but Im not. Im scared. Im at a point where im paranoid and constantly hearing that horrible sound of cat screeching in my dreams/wake state that everyday i ask my mom if they were fighting while i was asleep. She says no and im litterally hearing things since there so many noises going on in my house i.e a roomba vacuum every day which i offered could be a stressor since Penny startles easily. Weve doubled their muscle relaxer meds ti twice a day and we plugged in the feliway diffuser. I was so confident that they can be best friends again forever but now im too scared to try letting one out. I love my cat penny and i dont want her to be aggressive anymore. We dont know what to do or what the cause is after ruling out all possibilities.

Thanks for the detailed description. Well, I think the trigger is them being on the patio at night. It's quite likely that some outdoor cat triggered it. Even if they see it only from far away. Or the male could've seen prey at night & since he couldn't reach it to hunt it & he redirected his hunting instinct towards the female & attacked her. After all, you said that there were occasions of a "startle", when they were at night on the patio. So, there was always something there & it didn't just came out of the blue. But this time, it finally escalated due to other things adding to that. E.g. the arthritis of the female (which can make a cat overly sensitive, aggressive, fearful etc.). Maybe also that your mother came back & it made the male excited & restless. So, I recommend not letting them on the patio at night anymore. Also keep the female in your room at night, separated from the male. Make sure, she has a litter-box & water bowl though. So, please don't them them being together at night anymore....it's just too risky & it's quite clear that you have severe anxiety over this & this will influence the cats badly as well. Since they sense what you feel & it will make them feel the same way. So, my guess is, that the male caused all of this. It's very clear that the female is very defensive & fearful towards the male. She just shows aggression to protect herself. So, she isn't the problem here...she is the victim. Also, even if she gets meds now & isn't in pain anymore, she remembers him doing something bad to her & her being helpless against him. And if he looks a certain way, it triggers her trauma. Also, please don't put a cat into a kennel. A cat doesn't belong in a cage...since that can cause frustration & influence the introduction badly. Separate them in different rooms & put a door gate at the door. That's how you introduce 2 cats properly. It's also quite clear that the male has more energy than the female...and the female being much older just can't keep up anymore. He would've started bullying her sooner or later anyway. He needs more daily play till he is exhausted. Also play with the female every day, but don't make her move too much because of her arthritis. Try to engage her in more mental exercise like trick-training, intelligence puzzle etc. Your female having arthritis this early in her life, shows that she hasn't been doing enough exercise/play every day. So, my guess is, that the male is also lacking that. Lack of exercise will cause frustration, being overly sensitive, aggression or bullying behavior. So, more play is a must. Use a stick with feathers or similar, never a laser-pointer. Also consider walking your male in nature. That will keep him mentally & physically fulfilled. I have tutorials about that on my channel. What do you feed your cats? Do you free-feed? (dry food always available) or fixed meal times? Sorry, but if the condition is that if there is just 1 fight again & things are over...then this is pretty much pointless. It also brings an immense pressure & anxiety into the situation...which will definitely trigger something bad between the cats...because they feel all of that pressure & anxiety directed at them. So, this condition needs to be absolutely gone out of the mind of you or your parents...otherwise this is hopeless & not even worth working on. It's also not fair towards the cats...it's not their fault after all. It's not the fault of the female getting old & fragile...and it's not the fault of the male being younger & wanting more action in his life. It would be also the best, if you get a male kitten (younger than 6 months!) for your male to play with. The female can't fulfill the male anymore with playing etc...and it will always make the male depressed, because she will deny playing with him more & more as she gets older & her arthritis getting worse. It will frustrate him, that she denies him & that will cause him to bully her. But...if for whatever reason you decide that give up one cat...please don't re-home your female. She has been longer with you, is a lot older & will have a lot harder time to get used to a new home. She doesn't deserve being given away in such an age & while being sick. And she is the victim in all of this. The male will get used to a new home a lot quicker.

@@TravelersGarden_dgdr I appreciate you getting back to me. We feed them dry food, but right now for meds my mother pours the capsules into liquid/creams so they can digest it easier since penny is a picky eater. We do not let them out on the patio anymore at night you are right. We did let them out during the day when things were going great. The kennel was bought because my mom thought it would help transition them into seeing each other without a fight. We had them in a seperate room for about a week before getting the kennel. My parents are very impatient and they didnt want to deal with the cats banging and crying on the other side of the door. Ive had to be the one to constantly remind them that patience is key. But I agree we probably missed quite a few important aspects but we were just desperate to try anything. Merlin is very playful, he even plays fetch and we usually keep up with him. Penny is a lil more on the slower side BUT she loves the lazer pointer and my mom plays that with her before going to bed so if we have to try a different toy then ill look. Overall, i had hope in the beginning, but now i am letting the anxiety cloud my judgment and im not sure anymore. We did discuss that Merlin would be the most marketable because he is so young and playful. I would try keeping penny in my room overnight since she favors me more but im afraid my bedroom door doesnt shut all the way so she can easily open it and merlin can easily get in unless i block it. We all know this isnt their fault and we dont want the cats to live the rest of their time being caged up. Ive always wanted to take merlin outside but ive always assumed hed take the chance to run away so ill definitely look at your tutorial. I really appreciate your feedback it means a lot that you provide so much.

I would definitely suggest only fixed meal, so no free-feeding. Instead of the kennel I recommend a door gate. You can see what I mean in my recent introductions with my 2 new kittens to my older cat. If the female is at night in your room, there shouldn't be any whining. Of course, if both cats are played with right before bedtime. Yes, please make sure, that the door is closed properly. Why laser-pointer aren't good for cats: It's prone to cause anxiety, frustration & restless behavior. In severe cases it can cause obsession over the toy & make the cat ignore any other "real" toy. The laser-pointer isn't "real", because the cat can never catch the dot of light. It can never bite down & carry it like a real toy/ like prey. And that's exactly what causes the anxiety, frustration etc. That will influence the relationship negatively between the cats, because there is already an issue anyway. So, please only use real toys. Also only real toys can make a cat more confident, because it feels proud catching the toys. Again, it can never catch the dot of light. And confidence is what your female needs desperately now. If you do the outdoor-training right, he won't run away. I have now 3 cats & I walk them all (together). I hope that you will soon have some progress & that things will work out.

Hello. I would like you to help me with my cats. I brought at home a kitten and i already have an older cat. The cat is 1,5 years old and the kitten is up to now 6 months old. I separated them at the beginning and allowed to look to each other through a fence. After 3 weeks i put them together for 5 minutes playing with them with a feather stick. `````it went very well. The next day i tried the same program of playing and feeding and loving, but i was not able to finish the whole plan, because the older cat attacked the kitten and hit her in the eye. I went to the vet etc. etc. After that i kept them separated and just smelling each other through a few cm opened door (and kept this small door opening by a plastic stop). I am very much afraid to let them meet again although i know that it is not either possible or healthy to keep them apart forever.But i keep doing it because the older cat keeps hissing against the younger. I also have to tell you that the older cat is not socialised with other cats. She lives just with me since i adopted her when she was 2,5 months old and abandoned. Please, help! What can i do to make them friends?

I have a tutorial about how to introduce cats slowly. --> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fK5pZJB1ybiUmXU.html Only when they are absolutely peaceful at the fence, you can try to let them be together in a room. But to help you further I need more information: 1. Are *both* cats castrated? 2. How often do you play with both cats & with what kind of toy? Are they tired after each play-session? 3. How often to do you feed them each day? Is there free-feeding or only fixed meal times? 4. How many big cat-trees do you have & is there access to the outdoors (balcony, going on walks etc)? 5. Do you clip the claws of your cats? That would keep the cats from hurting each other, if they would scratch each other. If you don't do that, let the vet show you how to do it correctly or let the vet do it. In general I can say, that when having a cat that has been solitary from young childhood till adulthood, then it's always the best to get always 2 kittens at once. Reasons: 1. It will take longer time, but it wouldn't be fair for the kitten to be solitary till the adult cat becomes friendly. It's stressful for a kitten to be without a cat buddy & it does cause mental issues. 2. The adult cat can observe both kittens, how they communicate / interact with each other...that let's the adult cat learn how to be a cat again. Solitary cats forgot how to be cats...they don't understand their own kind anymore. But 2 kittens would be a great teacher for an adult cat. If it's just 1 kitten, then the adult cat has it very difficult to learn. 3. The kitten won't annoy the adult cat, because it has another kitten to play with...that will make the adult cat more relaxed, because it can just rest & watch the 2 kittens interact. And if the adult cat wants to participate, it can do that, if it wants.

@@TravelersGarden_dgdr the younger cat is not yet castrated but i am going to have her castrated within the next week. I feed them twice a day, but the older cat does not eat her whole food immediately although it is the correct amount for each meal. So i leave her bowl and she finished the meal within the next two hours. `the young cat eats the meal right away. I play with each cat with cat toys, as mouse, bird, small ball, sticks with feathers. I have small cat trees but i am going to buy bigger ones. `the problem is that in Greece, where i live, cat trees are very expensive. The older cat goes out to balcony, but with my presence and supervision, not alone and whenever she wants. That because i live in an industry area with big roads and big vehicles traffic. The road is next to our home. the younger cat does not want to go out to the balcony. I have tried to bring her out with me, but she hides herself in my arms. The truth is that i always had dogs and still have (but in a different apartment with my parents) and i took the cats because i saved them. `they were abandoned as kittens both of them. When i was raising the one i was trying to give her for adoption. Nobody was interested. I couldn't let them go back to the streets. Finally i ended up with 2 cats, that i love very much, but i'm sad of their relationship.
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 3 жыл бұрын
1. Yes, please let the younger one get castrated quickly. With 6 months they already can get into heat & the smell changes into an adult cat. That can make your older cat aggressive towards the younger one. Is the younger cat a male or female? 2. How many times each day do you play with both? Indoor cats need at least 3 times a day a play-session. 3. For 2 cats you need at least 2-3 big cat-trees. If cat-trees are too expensive where you live, you can build something similar yourself with very little money & not much effort. You can build giant scratching posts (tall wood post with carpet around) & put shelves on the wall (shelves just like for books but with carpet attached on the top, so the cats don't slip). In my cat play-room I have both things & I have a video where I show it & explain how to build it in detail. You can find the video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hq1gh8WUqt_QYYU.html 4. I highly recommend making your balcony secure with a cat net. That's not expensive & looks like that: sanctuarysos.com/balcony-enclosures/ It's like a net that keeps the cats inside the balcony. But still always supervise your cats on the balcony, even if there is a net. If your younger one is scared of the balcony, then you need to you some visual cover around...blocking the view to the street e.g., putting a chair, boxes or similar on the balcony, so it has something to hide behind, which will make it more calm. Don't force it, meaning don't hold the cat. Just open the door & let it go outside on its own...only use food, toys, cuddle & praise to motivate. (ONLY after the balcony is secured with a net of course!) Pick a time, where there is less traffic. And of course don't let the older cat be around at that time...both cats aren't ready to meet without fence. In that time you can put the older cat into the separate room of the younger one. You need to make a territory swap anyway, every day a couple of times...without the cats meeting of course. 5. Maybe you can find another kitten that is abandoned? Maybe in a shelter or on the street? So, the kitten has somebody to be & play with till the adult cat becomes social.

Well, the cats need to be neutered as soon as possible. Otherwise they will start to fight each other very seriously. So, please tell your grandparents to neuter the cats! Deaf cats are very complicated...there is only a chance, if he would've been a young kitten. But he isn't anymore & he has been in a lot of fights with other cats, meaning he experienced a lot of bad things with them...it's too late. You need to separate them immediately (in different rooms) & slowly re-introduce them to each other. *How to do that is seen in the Second Part of this tutorial.* Link in pinned comment. And don't leave out any step, because you have a very serious case. Don't let them alone together! The male could injure the female severely (till blood!) & traumatize her beyond repair. Rub the female all over with a t-shirt you worn a day. You need to get your scent on her as much as possible. After such a fight, you need to give them at least 1-2 days a break from each other. Meaning, they shouldn't see each other at all. In that time calm them down in their separate territories. With a lot of playing, multiple times a day till they are tired. Give them a gentle & slow massage (neck, shoulders, back) & talk to them softly. Then you can start the re-introduction like I show in Part 2.

@TravelersGarden_dgdr 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely separate them, when you leave the house. When you are 100% sure, they are best friends again, then you can stop separating them when leaving. Make sure she has everything in that room she needs & that it's not too small. It's actually not unusual that cats react this way after huge stress. I have heard other stories like that. Even with cats that were best friends. But all bonded with each other again, as long as the owner did the re-introduction slowly & correctly. If she was attacked, then she was in fear of her life. That is a lot of stress & that's why she overreacted to your male cat. She just thought, she would get attacked again. And as she attacked him & smelled most likely like that animal that attacked her, he went into attack-mode as well. Such misunderstandings can happen unfortunately. Make sure to take your female cat to the vet & get her checked. Wish you a lot of success.

Thank you. Are all your cats castrated? If not, that this should be done asap. Well, the cats need to be separated asap & re-introduced with a door gate (I have tutorial about that, link in pinned comment)....that will take a while. If you don't do that, your male cat will kill the other cats at some point...especially the female has zero chance against a male. So, this is very serious. If you don't have the time to give the cats the home they need, so they won't try to kill each other....then you should re-home the male, that is attacking the female. So, there is no other way...either you take the time to make big changes or re-home. Keeping it like it is, makes everyone involved unhappy...or even worse...it may end in a disaster.

Are all cats castrated/fixed? Yes, it's not good that there wasn't a proper introduction. The older cat most likely saw the kitten as an intruder. You still can use the tips in the video to make them friends.

@@chaos9649 Ah, 2 males can be a problem...there you need to take extra care that things go well. But good that they are fixed. The tips in the video will help you. I have 2 males as well (I have now 3 cats...2 males & 1 female)...and I used those tips for them as well. Both are very dominant males.
