Tutorial: Kartboy Front and Rear Shifter Bushings on 2006 Subaru WRX STi

Learn how to install both the front and rear shifter bushings on a 2006 Subaru WRX STi. All STi's are the same and the WRX is very similar. I'd recommend doing the short shifter at the same time, as we found it a lot easier to take the rod out of the car to put the bushings on, rather than try and squeeze the rear bushing on under the car.

Yes this mod is a must have and shifting into gears feel direct and firm because of the poly. I love TIC and kartboy mods, very inexpensive with huge gains.

Word of advice from someone who has done this....be prepared to run into at least one big problem. So do this on a weekend that you have all day

yeah you have to take the c-clip out of the cup to get the link out. basically what i had to do. easier just to do both at once.

thanks. sorry about that! YT didn't like my audio settings and i used to not check the videos once uploaded to YT. works fine on my comp. ive since fixed that on tutorials going forward, so the newer ones will be fine.

So, this is not really a good place for this I know, but if I installed headers + up pipe w/ a downpipe, will my car be damaged at all if I did not get a tune for a month or two? Also if I did those, should I apply heat wrap and if so, where is it applicable? Thanks so much!!!

How hard would it be to get the link out of the car if you aren't doing the shifter at the same time? Looks like you would have to remove the shifter anyway?

Thanks for your videos on this topic. I used them both for my install today. However, you don't have to remove the transmission cross members to install the front and rear bushings. The geometry is weird, but it can be done with some finessing.

haha shouldve picked my dp video or header video!! anyway, yes you need a tune or your engine will be all messed up. heat wrap the entire tube. basically you just want to leave the flanges unwrapped.

totally. the shifter isnt complete w/o the bushings. gives shifts much more positive and crisp feel.

Where did you get the metal bushing for the front bushing? Is it from the old rubber front bushing?

What do these bushings do exactly? Do they keep the gear shift from being moved left and right while in gear?

abu ess performance! Basically it gives you better feel when shifting. Stiffer, more precise and more crisp. The stick wont feel all loose and sloppy with these bushings. The stick will still have play that youre talking about tho. Thats not all that important cause youre not actually using the stick at that point

nukem384 oh ok got you. I ask because I replaced all the bushings but these, and I still have a sloppy shifter (moves side to side in gear a few inches) and I’m at a loss as to why

@@JL-pq4rl yeah its going to do that. i wouldnt worry about it, as every cars shifter is like that. its all about the feel when shifting anyway, not when its resting in gear just sitting there

@@JL-pq4rl I know this reply is a bit late, but I was able to get pretty much all side-to-side play out of my 2004 STi transmission by replacing the linkage bushings *AND* the yoke/spring pin itself (i.e. the part that attaches to the shaft coming out of the transmission and the two nested roll pins that secure it to the shaft). I replaced the linkage bushings with TiC bushings and the yoke with an OEM one (about $50!). Turns out, the bushings in the linkage were sloppy, the yoke was wallowed out internally, and the roll pins were a bit loose too. The front and rear stay bushings don't remove shift slop, they just keep the shifter ball and socket joint more firmly located. It is the U-joint bushings, the yoke itself, and the spring pins that wear and cause the side-to-side and, to a lesser extent, front-to-back play. Hope this helps someone!

for a part like that, id say just get it from subaru. not sure there would be any aftermarket brands for something like that.

no, DP doesn't get in the way. its the driveshaft that gets in the way. dont bother to try and take it off, way too much work for what its worth

The rear stay bushing was probably installed upside-down. Not much else it could be unless you also removed the shifter for the install and re-installed it backwards.
