What I learned (paraphrased): "Not only should you and the rest of the band be in the pocket, but ideally over a four bar phrase you're inside, outside, ahead of, lagging slightly behind, and at times hovering magically *right beside* the pocket." I've never played keys in my life yet here I am getting a masterclass in rhythm! 😍 Love your playing Matt!!

I'm not a keyboard player at all, but this kind of video is so useful for all musicians. So little attention is devoted to rhythmic articulation and how it can affect the feel of a track, but you provide great examples that help all of us grasp what we're hearing.

I just bought the download to accompany this. This is the kind of stuff I love learning about. You can get rather fatigued on KZfaq watching video after video of lameness. Your teaching and style, Matt, are really something! Thank you for all the time you put into these videos. When a man says he likes Patrice Rushen, I know I am in the right place! I love Acid Jazz too... give me a bit of Incognito or Brand New Heavies and I am a happy man!

I’m hooked, it’s super refreshing and motivating to hear a variety of rich sounds and rythms these days. I want to understand/feel all those chords extensions and you make it more achievable by deconstructing everything for my ears while showing fun ways to practice. Thanks a lot!

There are limits to that type of rhythm tho. The general rule of thumb is to imagine a sine wave, then ride that wave with variable tempo. (Ebb and flow. Etc) That takes some time to master tho. (And it gets immediately crazy when you add polyrhythm ideas or odd meter). Beyond that...I just tell people to listen to Tool. Or maybe some jazz.

Matt you are so right, and thanks so much!!! It is really hard to find good tutorials on period keyboard styles. And- you really do have to play every keyboard differently. I have learned SO MUCH from you and Mike Little about playing vintage keys the way they sound best- in context. Your clarinet tutorial was pure gold (and the clavinet one was great too, lol, thanks spell check) and I don't even know what to say about this treasure trove of keyboard secrets here... Wow and thanks so much!!!! ❤

Thank you so much, always. Full of cool advices. I was checking my own chords voicing, extensions, 9, 11, 13 and altered. Always cool to see it by the others, in term of keybards. You are full of great ideas like "don't change so much notes, stay simple". and then the rythm riffs that i already use, but with cool tips, like taping left hand or insert ghost notes... so much helpfull. It is very often close to clave rythm, what i call white triplet. My rythm signature after all those times practising. But i can hear it on a lot of pop keyboardist too. Thank you for your precious tuto.
