[tutorial] Lighting switch Porsche 911 (996) and Boxster (986) - Control box on Intervention lights

Intervention on control box lights Porsche 911 (996) and Boxster 986.
Tools needed:
- 1 torx screwdriver T15 for the 3 fixing screws (the screwdriver head must be magnetized)
- 1 plastic crowbar
- 1 flat nose pliers for central fixing nut
- 1 bomb cleaning electrical contacts
- 1 electric switch ref. 996.613.535.00.

Thank you very much. I just changed the switch at my 996.2 following your instructions. Everything went as you show it. The only difference is that at the 996 you need a T20 instead of the T15.

Just found that my low beams not working and hi beam only when passing switch used but not on full beam switch. Tried jiggling switch about between positions but no joy at all and still same . I got a tip to start engine and put headlamp switch into Fog lamp position and give it a quick slap in to Lo beam position. I did and Lo beam lights came on and Hi beam also working now. This proved to me it was the switch internal contacts and will need replacing. Your VID clip showed me exactly how to remove the switch and i can only thank you for posting. Just thought this little tip might help some others too.

¡ Fenomenal Monsieur ! I’m glad how i improved my french, as i understood the whole ‘ñapa’. The problem in my 996 mkll is that the switch is stuck (doesn’t twist), but now i know how to get to it. Mercy bocoup!

Just changed out the switch on my 2001 Boxster (986). Solved the dim/no light problem instantly. Thanks for the excellent video. Part was ~ $150. Not sure I needed it - maybe cleaning would have done the trick, the old one looked pretty good, and but I already had the new part in hand and decided to put it in. One tip - the screw in the switch needs a magnetic driver to get it out. I managed to get it loosened with a non-magnetic driver, then used a strong magnet to pull it out. Other than that, this was very easy, thanks to the video.

ed george Thankyou very much for your comment. In my case the screwdriver was magnetic but you're right to say that the tool must be magnetized to extract this screw easily. I have a 2003 986. And my xenon headlights would flicker and not come on. There is no Porsche service where I live so I called the next state over service. They told me the bulbs were old. Before replacing the bulbs, I could get them to come on by flipping the headlight switch on and engaging the high beams. After replacing bulbs, same problem but now pushing the level for the high beams will not turn on low beams. Could the switch be bad, or like this the contacts? Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you for your videos.

haudijosh there are lots of forums on this - most point to a faulty switch. The same thing happened to me. I change my switched twice before concluding it was the headlight ballast unit. Change it and all good.

Bonsoir, cela dépend de l’âge de votre Porsche. Mais le changement du commutateur éclairage n’étant pas très compliqué et son prix pas très élevé j’opterais pour son remplacement. Mieux vaut le changer car pour ma part je m’étais retrouvé avec un éclairage défectueux sur la route en pleine nuit. Donc vue l’importance de cette pièce n’hésitez pas. A plus
