Hey, I really want to thank you for having done this tutorial, I'm currently working on a 1/12 scale panzer IV from figma for the GuP anime show but given it's just a single tone of grey the vehicle doesn't look right and given it's size it is perfect for modulation. Dear Mr Mendes I'm watching with interest your video and I am marvelling at your skill and ability. I am also asking myself what am I looking at? I'm not looking at an attempt to depit a ww2 fighting vehicle because surely that is just the canvass you are using. What I am looking at is a master class in light and shade this is how an art lesson would go. This is pure art at a very high level and while I accept you go on to weathering etc where practical dipiction may ameliorate the true artistic base of the endeavour the whole project has so many facets it is truly mind blowing. Thanks for such an instructive video and I certainly look forward to seeing many more. MrD53

Cool video Carlos and super relevant for what's coming up next ;) couple of minor tweaks to discuss but we can go into detail on that later. overall a very nice preparation effect and I look forward to the next installment :D I liked the way you amended things towards the end with a little fine tuning. Had some thoughts about colour modulation using a dry brush techniques and blanket white from above etc. but I like this though, striking but subtle. However I do wish whoever gave this the thumbs down was brave enough to say why, in a constructive way of course :)

thanks for this great video! you're definetly getting a sub from me. Just my thoughts on the technique of colour modulation: it's a great technique that has great potential for creating realistic, eye catching results however i think the majority of the people who use this technique tend to OVER do the effect. A number of recent articles in certain scale modelling pubications come to mind. For those that say colour modulation is unrealistic: well painted surfaces exposed to the sun for extended periods of time will fade more than surfaces not exposed to direct sunlight (underside of fenders, hull ect.). In reality, we also SEE these vehicles outside, in the sun where upper surfaces will reflect more light and therefore appear lighter. However, both of these effects are reasonably subtle in reality and therefore much more subtle when scaled down. And while modulating the hell out of models does make them eye catching, it isn't entirely realistic. I think a sweet spot needs to be found somewhere inbetween checkerboard and super flat paint schemes that looks realistic, and in my opinion this sweet spot is closer to the subtle, flat side than the prominent, eye catching side. that said, great video carlos! I'm going to be doing some more work on colour modulation myself on my next builds :)

The actual grey was very very dark, almost black. Even darker than that original base coat.

I always learn a lot from you, and I'm working my way through all of your videos. This is suppose to be a mass produced tank built during WWII. and probably would have the not have the exact delineated lines between colors. Wouldn't it look more natural and authentic to fade between colors either with the airbrush or paint brush fading. It looks too perfect and clean.

i usually dont do color modulation on my models, it looks nice but it doesnt look realistic like if you look at a ww2 stuf 3 you wont see it painted in this. but despite i like color modulation because it kinda pops the recesses and in general it looks a lot nicer than a normally painted model. not saying that theres anything wrong with normally painting a model tho

You should make model WWII Planes!

You ever think it might be easier to paint certain hard-to-get to parts before gluing them on. I don't know if you glued the top turret shell to the rest, but I would have left it unglued and painted the inside, so people can see how the gun works. I think the inside of these tanks were painted white to reflect any kind of light on inside of the tank, because once you shut the hatch its dark as hell, except for a little mini light in the tank. Anyway, I'm not trying to tell you how to do your hobby, so no offence if I caused any. I'm just trying to give some tips. Not that ya need any, you're very good at what ya do. But I just thought maybe you never thought of that. So c-ya.

I'm not sure really. The effect is nice, but a little too elaborate to be realistic IMO. It looks blotchy, and thats not the way tanks get variations in color.

for me it is to much modulation....and the sagged track is also wrong.
