One thing I like to do with my recoverable boosters is to have a smaller tank at the bottom of the booster which I disable the lf and ox to (not empty it, just make sure those little green arrows turn into red Xs). This has two desireable effects for me. 1; I don't accidentally use up that fuel to push out my Ap, 2: The center of mass on descent is so low that I only need RCS thrusters at the top of the booster (about the same height as the airbrakes), which saves a little weight, and it tends to stabilize boosters down all by itself, even if the airbrakes burn up on reentry. ... I do also use FMRS, so I don't need to worry about getting my second stage to orbit quickly as mentioned here, but that is another story entirely.

I do the same with the small tanks just to enable for landing fuel. It really helps avoid making mistakes and you know you'll always have enough fuel left to land :)

Trying to do this on console feels doubly tough due to performance. But with tutorials like this from you and Marcus House, I can at least try to mirror what you all are doing. Great work!

It's easier if you use parachutes and don't aim for landing at KSC launch site actually. Otherwise you really need to pay attention to your ascent profile, few degrees in each direction and you won't make it. Good luck!

when the second stage lights up, you should switch back to the first stage immediately (second stage WILL keep burning as long as it stays in render range), and do the burn back right away. After the boost back, switch back to the second stage, which should still be in range, and still burning. Your boostback will be way more economical that way and you will fall a lot straighter, which helps in making the landing more precise.

I can't imagine doing this without the Trajectories mod. It should be a part of the base game, like many other mods (I am looking at you, navball docking indicator!). Also, what's the name of the last track that's playing during the landing of the 2nd Stage?

I get around the time to circularise by going for a very steep launch, boosting to 100km then starting the booster's boost back burn before switching to second stage for more circularising burn. Can usually keep S2 AP far enough away while booster lands.

If you want the full Elon Musk experience, look for the mod "Reusable Rockets" (or something like that), it adds landing legs for boosters and some other parts. Also you should get the mod Hullcam VDS, it adds cameras to the game and there's the Aerocam which you can attach to the end of your booster. I used it when I tried to land and it's a really great mod

Thanks Mark, this vid helped me complete a 240t payload reusable rocket system. (I'm using the new big white tank as target payload) . Do you think using these reusable rockets are viable in career mode, or maybe I should just design a vehicle that will refuel the landed stages before I recover them?

Awesome work mate! Just wondering if you considered adding 'Garden modules' to your domes mod. So, for example, the smallest one being about the size of the mk 2 cockpit and the largest ones just being a model of a tree that must be placed within one of the domes. Just for the nice colony aesthetic, or have it intergrate well with USI life support to slow down or, in large enough numbers, stop the development of homesickness ??

that lift and control by winglets is insane. With Grid Fins in reusability pack u have power to maybe increase angle of attack by few degrees, with theese winglets it looks like u would be able to do loop and land in same attempt. what the h**l

Impressive landing! But the much more steeper ascent profile and extra fuel required for landing, makes me wonder if we just ascent efficiently, and no need for extra fuel, we can build a much smaller rocket at the first place, then the cost saving isn’t that much?
@Catishcat
@Catishcat 5 жыл бұрын
I did this with a smaller rocket, both stages landed vertically without parachutes. Not near KSC though, don't have enough dV left to turn around on the first stage.

Very nice! Although the rocket itself is pretty inefficient when it comes to payload weight you have to think about the money that you save with recovering the stages. Is it worth it?
@MarkThrimm
@MarkThrimm 6 жыл бұрын
You actually save a lot of money, because what is expensive in KSP are engines and science equipment. Fuel is cheap, so getting as much back as possible makes you pay only for the fuel. Cheers!

That's my solution of choice as well. But if I want to play realistically, I have to try not to get those boosters wet (salt water damages engines and stuff) and that's one more reason to learn to fly boosters.

Interesting. My setup for reusable boosters has the boostback burn before circularizing the upper stage to minimize losses. I normally put 3 km/s on the first stage with 1.3+ TWR and 1.2-1.8 km/s on the second stage with 0.5+ TWR at max payload. And booster separation normally happens between 1100-1400 m/s orbit velocity (although I'm a pussy about landing them and use parachutes to get down to 20-30 m/s for easy usage). My orbits can get down to 75km on Apogee if I manage about 1.7 TWR on first stage and 0.8 on second stage. What is your net cost per ton of payload to LKO and max payload capacity usually? At the time of writing this, I've achieved 890 credits per ton for 33 ton payload and 1123 credits per ton for 81 ton payload. I'd be curious if you could hit 500 credits per ton. Maybe shrinking the upper stage and expanding the lower stage saves cost, or maybe the increased fuel requirement cancels out the advantage.
