A lot of people interpret this is being about s/h but I always felt like it was about growing up, and growing out of your more immature friends. “She’s getting older, I guess she’s gotta cut her blue hair off” blue hair is a bright unconventional colour, and it’s young it’s stupid, she cuts it off. Her hair is her immature friends. She has to cut them off to grow as a person. “I guess I’ll just miss her, even though she isn’t even really gone”, mourning someone who isn’t dead is weird but it happens a lot especially in school and college and university. You evolve a lot in those years and you sometimes grow out of your friends or people change and grow out of you, for better or worse, and this can lead you to mourn their dead self tat you were friends with, and they’re alive just changed. This is from the perspective of the person being left behind I think, talking about how they miss this person who is still there, just not the same.

She's new to this world, he is her mentor. _'What seemed so blue in the sunlight_ _By night was a pale green'_ If the blue hair is a symbol of her childhood innocence, this might mean she changes during the night, that her naivety is something she shows off like an accessory and not an actual personality trait. _'And I tried to hold her_ _But it didn't really last long'_ He's trying to keep her pure, staying in her childhood state. _'And she's getting older_ _I guess she's gotta cut her blue hair off'_ She's getting older, he can't stop her from maturing no matter how much he tries. When she cuts her hair off, she's no longer the kid asking him things anymore. _'She asked me if she was pretty_ _Well it's clear that the girl's a fraud_ _There's really no way of winning_ _If in their eyes you'll always be a dumb blonde'_ I see 'the girl' as another person, a blonde woman, and she's asking if she's pretty. This is her considering dying her hair. She relies on his response of what's attractive and what's not before becoming an adult. Maybe because she has an immature attachment to him, and needs him to say the hair colour will be pretty. But he tells her that people only see that woman as a dumb blonde, there's no way of winning if she dyes her hair. AKA, there's no way to win as an adult woman. _'And she cried over nothing_ _So there was nothing I could do to stop'_ He doesn't have control over this reckless, hormonal teen anymore. She's crying over nothing so he can't calm her down. _'Her from cutting_ _Her beautiful blue hair off'_ A suicide attempt and a step into adulthood, cutting ties with her naive past. _'It looked like cotton candy_ _And just as quick to get licked away'_ This genius lyrical subversion at first makes you vision her colourful hair as the cotton candy, until you realise he's talking about blood. Just as quick to get licked away. But 'licked away' also means taking the girl away, and that's what happens next. _'Last I heard she was living_ _With a boy who acts his age'_ Showing she's grown up, moved on and away from him. He was there right before the suicide attempt, but now, he barely even knows where she lives. She grew up. _'And I guess I'll just miss her_ _Even though she isn't even really gone_ _But things are just different_ _Ever since she cut her blue hair off'_ This verse shows a metaphorical death of the girl, because even though she didn't die that day he will 'just miss her'. She didn't take her life but ever since that day she changed. This ending is a depressing exclamation of what happens when a person is forced to grow up. To cut their blue hair off. If anyone's reading this: don't take my interpretation as gospel, I didn't look up the actual meaning, this is just what I got from the lyrics 😄

It seems like she used to be a popular blonde, but people started to dislike her, thats why she asked how to be funny. But she eventually dyed her hair blue to be different and developed a new personality, but in those peoples eyes she was still the same person, so she accepted that fate and instead of staying with her new persona, she cut her blue hair off and developed her blond hair back. But the friends she made with that persona still miss her, even though she's not gone, just different.

I struggle with it so much and it brings me comfort to see recognition without explicitly saying it For those arguing that it’s not sh, it’s never been confirmed by the creators. The pause in between “so there was nothing I could do to stop her from cutting…” is def a reference to sh but I’ve interpreted this song that way because it’s an addiction I deal with and a song that is about/interpreted as sh helps me think I’m not alone

Every time I listen to this song, I interpret it from a dad’s perspective, seeing his daughter grow up. For example some of the lines such as: “And I guess, I’ll just miss her. Even though she isn’t even really gone” This line sounds like she moved out, and started a life with that boy in the lyrics. But it also seems like he misses the old her. “And I tried to hold her, but it didn’t really last long. And she’s getting older, so I guess she’s gotta cut her blue hair off.” This especially sounds like the father struggled, but eventually came to accept the fact that his daughter is growing up and maturing, and no longer that little kid anymore. I also think it’s about him trying to keep their relationship alive. Despite the fact that she’s changed a lot. Not wanting to hang out or contact her dad anymore

The thing I love about this song is that you can interpret it however you want. Some people think of it as SH and others think of it as just growing up.

self harm is a stretch, and the song means the person you used to know changed (she cut her blue hair off which symbolized maturity, and nothing lasting forever.) she grew out of her insecurities, need for validation and attention, and finally cut her blue hair off. (even though she isnt really gone) you'll miss her because thats not the same person you used to know.

I like the shots of the blue wig. Implying that her blue hair is also a kind of costume. Maybe it really expressed who she was at some point, but it definitely doesn't anymore. So no matter how "beautiful" other people find her blue hair, she wants to get rid of it and move on to a more authentic phase of her life. And she seems to be doing better. Going from trying desperately to be funny and pretty, to finding a nice partner. We can even imagine that she actively chose to distance herself from the character singing the song. i literally love Blue Hair, this song reminds me of good memories, it makes me reflect, it makes me cry, even though it was released 4 years ago and i found out now in 2023, Tv Girl has become my favorite band.

I feel like this song is about a person having to move on from a certain stage they were in. All three of the chorus almost say the same thing on a general scale: wanting to hold on, having to let go of something/someone(themselves most likely) who is gone, but still there. To me this really sounds like the writer is reminiscing their older self that they have to let go of. Whether they've moved from a happy stage to a sad one or vice versa
