this song is easily my favorite off the album. its full of nostalgia and a lil bit of whimsy for me. makes my heart hurt but in a good way. beautiful video!

One of my all time favourite songs, which I recently discovered. I really dig the music and the lyrics. Maybe it is also because that cembalo like instrument was used in Czechoslovakia in the 60s 70s in fairy tales, which were still favourite in the time I was a kid, so it might feel nostalgic for me. And nostalgia combined with cynicism is basically my life right now. But screw the ending of the song, really :D

for the past four years ive been thinking about the meaning behind this song. i still cant quite put my finger on it, but this has been my take: I feel like its about a couple in the perspective of someone is struggling with addiction. They know their addiction is going ultimately ruin the relationship in either death/overdose/sewerslide or heartbreak (i really feel like death because of the whimsical and nostalgic sound - also the wording of lyrics). The speaker (addict) knows they hurt their spouse which is why they admit to being the cynical one for choosing drugs/alcohol over them. The spouse is so hurt they say it wasn't love, but they were in love- they are so angry and hurt that they lash out and say it wasnt love. Regardless of the meaning, the song will have a special place in my heart.

Ooo. Could give meaning to "I like the harder stuff"?? Too. Nice interpretation. I'd say I think it's him talking to an ex, who lost faith in love. He was the one who was always cynical about love, she was maybe bright and jolly before, but now lost hope. He also felt like he gave her "too much" and that wasn't enough for the idea of love she had. Wine and roses were fun (again maybe ideation about some "ideal love") But he always maybe enjoyed the "harder stuff" (could be sex, could be fights, could be just closeness). He talks about how she's on a house on a hill (maybe alluring to head in the clouds type stuff, but a stretch for sure) and he feels like in her idea of love, she will forget him (as a real person). Also staring at someone's eyes while they look out a window also alludes to a kind of childishness/princess type stuff (or I'm looking into it too much) But at the same time he mourns the fact that she had lost that dream like love because of him. That means that he made someone else cynical like him. Also I'd say the tune goes from whimsical to the violin (stretch again but I'm dramatic) to maybe allude to the feeling of someone loosing their innocence (this is a huge stretch)

I don't remember much of the meaning of the song but i think they also have a hard time opening up to their partner. My apologies if my information was wrong.
