Hi Sorin. Greetings from Australia. Great video as usual :-}. Now, when you connect the light bulb(s) in series with your device, in case of a short, you limit the current to the device. Say, with a 100W bulb you get the current limited to 430mA @230V. So you can test your board WITHOUT blowing your fuses, and something actually might get hot. Of course, if you want higher current, use more bulbs - a total of 230W for 1A or 460W for 2A and so on. I have built my AC current limiter out of 4 bulbs, that I can individually turn ON or OFF each, giving me more flexibility without changing the bulbs for the different power. I am sure you knew this - just wanted to explain for other people watching and wanting to learn something :) Regards, Jerry.

Great video. In my HVAC business we see this kind of problem a lot. Insects get into the cases of outdoor refrigeration compression units when the weather gets cold, and they congregate in between the contacts of three phase contactor switches because of the heat coming from contactor coils. I’ve seen bugs take down 10 horsepower walk in coolers with $8000 worth of food in them...

I was shouting with my headphones on "its smoking from the socket", my wife thought the house was on fire. 😂😂 Why not just test the the board with the insects removed first before renewing the socket? That's why the board fuse did not blow, the short was before the board fuse. Brilliant entertainment. Thank you Sorin.

The first time the bug got there and got fried the heat fried the plastic of the socket and turned it into conductor/resistor. He could have just soldered the cable he cut earlier directly on the place of the socket. That would have been the fastest fix.

That the internal fuses didn't blow, but the mains plug fuse did can be described perfectly by kirchoff's current laws as demonstrated in this case by the very low Rl being the cockroach itself being closest to the 220v mains supply

The old trick for powering up equipment with a potentially short-circuit using an incandescent lightbulb in series works very well, it can dissipate a lot of power and the resistance is very non-linear, i.e. almost zero when the lamp is cold and several 100 ohms when hot. Fault finding is possible because the forward voltage drop of the semiconductors can be measured under power.

I use a variac and/or a series lightbulb for these kind a things. (and every DUT is behind my 1:1isolation transformer) My first TV repair (in the 80's, I think was 17) Also a short. I placed a matras and pillows over the TV, bridged the fuse with wire and then plugged in the TV with an isolated pair of pliers. Result, Beng, collected the pieces of the exploded capacitor, replaced it and it worked again

In hindsight it’s obvious why the internal fuse never blew. We often jump to conclusions and don’t have the discipline to think rationally. But it will happen again, that’s just how the human brain works ! A good book on the topic is that of Daniel Kahneman - Thinking. Fast, and slow. "It is the consistency of the information that matters for a good story, not its completeness. Indeed, you will often find that knowing little makes it easier to fit everything you know into a coherent pattern." Thanks for the videos Sorin !

I had a similar problem. A friend gave me a 55" 4K LG TV, had a blown fuse. I removed the power board and underneath on the TV back was a black mess, strange pieces of something unknown. I checked the board and no fault found. I replaced the fuse and it worked. The blown black mess was the remains of a lizard that crawled into the AC socket and fried itself hehe!

That must have really stunk when you cooked that bug! Once I absolutely could not find a short that was blowing fuse. I put in a larger fuse and watched for a pop or pillar of smoke. This led me directly to a shorted transistor. Luckily the board wasn’t damaged in the process. Replaced the transistor, put back in the proper fuse, problem solved. I highly DO NOT recommend this troubleshooting method, for it could create unrepairable board damage, eyeball damage, or even catch your place on fire! I now use a variable voltage ac transformer 0-130V ac “in America” and use a 500W photoflood bulb in series with my hot wire wire on my power cord using a flange base bulb socket and a junction box wired up with with a male plug on one end, and a female ac receptacle on the out side of the bulb which I plug my device under test into. Only the hot wire travels through the incandescent bulb filament, the white common and ground just goes around the bulb without any connection. The bulb filament on the hot in series acts just like an inline fuse to lower the current if there is a short in the circuit. The brighter the bulb, the more direct of a short in the device under test. I can test pretty large amps with a 500w bulb, if no short it passed enough current/voltage to actually let the device under test operate normally if the bulb isn’t glowing.

Sorin, a very good choice to remove the rubbish food, it was a worry watching you in the garden having problems breathing. :-( And the t.v set, i have never seen a socket do that before, madness lol. The plug looks non polarised, so it does not matter the way it goes in. Mains goes through the bridge rectifier anyway, so it does not matter at all. I have never seen a cockroach in the uk, maybe the set was made in malaysia?.
