TV's most RADICAL Show EVER was the Brady Bunch. (yes, I mean it.)

Television has changed radically in the past sixty years, but a lot of modern trends can be traced back to a very unlikely source... the Brady Bunch.

When I first ran across one of your videos regarding the Orville, I expected to see a subscriber amount in the hundreds of thousands at least. I was surprised to say the least. Great job!

I think it’s the puppet schtick. I enjoy watching for the analysis, but I never like or subscribe because the puppet is just not working for me. It literally does not add anything to his videos. In most shows with puppets the puppet is interacting with someone or something making it engaging for the viewers. You can literally splice clips of the puppet from any episode and splice them into any other episode and no one would know. In fact, he could have hours of footage him just moving the puppet and record over the same footage for every episode. If he isn’t doing that then…well, I don’t know why not. We wouldn’t notice. The puppet isn’t ever doing anything thematic to the review, or the environment doesn’t change. The puppet literally doesn’t add anything. He needs an intro to explain why a puppet and not just him like Quantum Leap had to explain in every episode. Otherwise new viewers are left asking “did I miss something here? Why a puppet in this review aimed at an adult audience?” The more I watch the more I realize he must be camera shy because the puppet is literally adding nothing to his reviews. Just the opposite, it’s distracting and leads people to believe these (if not for the titles) are for kids. For people scanning thumbnails, you’re not going to attract a lot of new viewers. Why don’t you just do a video essay without the puppet? It comes off as lazy and confusing. Nerdstlagic is a channel that does video essays without showing his face if your camera shy. Maybe check him out.

For what it's worth, I love the puppet. It made me do a double-take at first, but it's cute and harmless and it stands out in a fun, non-negative way. Your mileage may vary, though! :)

I think you've stretched this idea past the breaking point. Reboots aren't "long form storytelling", they're just attempts to squeeze more cash out of known brands.

You could just as easily say continuing to make new seasons of a popular current series is just a way of "squeezing more cash" out of it. What they did with the Brady Bunch was literally the definition of "long-form storytelling". With The Brady Brides we got to find out what happened to the characters in the years after the show ended, and then they continued to tell that same story off-and-on for 10 more years, without ever ignoring anything that happened in any of the previous reunions. So, you have Jan and Marcia with the same husbands (played by the same actors), but now they have children, for example. Of course they made those things to make money, but they also respected the characters and the audience enough to try to make a believable story (even though The Bradys was a steaming pile of crap...).

I do know My Three Sons, one of the longest-running sitcoms, did show its characters grow older over the course of years before The Brady Bunch, but obviously it was still the exception back then

Why is everyone so confused? Adults don’t look for content with puppets. I think I accidentally found your channel but accident purely by its title, however when I saw the puppet I thought it would be funny. It’s not. This theme is so confusing. Shawn your analyses are excellent. You could be among some best video essayists out there. Drop the puppet schtick.

I loved The Brady Bunch. I've watched all 117 episodes, the animated series, The Brady Variety Hour, The Brady Brides and The Bradys. If Robert Reed didn't complain about the original series, they would've done 2 or 3 more seasons.

The point about Soap Operas hits home. I know way more about General Hospital lore than a man just turning 25 should all because my mom and grandma watched it so religiously, it's practically as much of childhood as the shows actually made for my generation. And it's STILL going last i checked...

The incorporation of the soap opera genre's tropes into other TV show genres is nothing new: The groundbreaking 1980s urban drama, "Hill Street Blues" has been described as a prime time cop show that uses soap narrative tropes as a form of serious drama, just like how "St. Elsewhere" did the same for a medical drama series.

Really well done! I would take the development of these shows a step further even. With advancements in AI and computer learning you could have one of these shows involve the viewer (through video, no holodecks). You can become the main character of your favorite show, or maybe have a casual conversation with a character before you go to bed at night from your laptop.

Thanks! With the advancements in VR, I feel like we're getting closer and closer to that kind of experience. You actually reminded me of an old Flash-based Breaking Bad interactive experience called "Walt's Warning" that's kind of similar to what you're describing. It's not nearly as advanced, but it's fun to imagine what might be possible in the future.

Nooooooo!😲 Say it ain't so. They are not going to mess up Daria. Daria without Jane, is like peanut butter without some jelly or jam. Mtv is about to screw this up big time. It would have been fine, if Daria were off in college at a school where Jodie happens to attend, then they just got close. Starting over from scratch though is a slap in the face to all of us fans of the true Daria show. It can't be remade.

Thanks! I really appreciate it!! The little stuffed animal is an alien named "Fuzzball" from the extremely weird Disneyland attraction, Captain EO. It's based on a very strange Rick Baker creature design, with butterfly wings and an upsettingly long tale that resembles an earthworm. The plushie is definitely a lot cuter than the real thing!

The reboot concept wasn’t knew radio shows from the 30s-50s were rebooted for television in the 50s-60s But the Brady kids wanted to do more serious issues on the Brady Bunch but the network said no. But some reboots don’t work because the show might only work in a specific time period. Saved by the Bell as written in 1989 wouldn’t have worked with teen audiences today, teens of the 80s and 90s didn’t have to deal with the issues post 9/11 teens have to deal with. Being a teen of the 80s-90s was a fun time. Girl Meets World was just too bland and never took on serious issues like Boy Meets World did The Wonder Years although it’s just about growing up the late 60s/early 70s it was one of the few periods of dramatic change, the original show was only 20 years after the time period which made it more relatable vs 50 plus years.

Lol I loved the realization about the soap opera argument! On a serious note, I had no idea that The Brady Bunch was so revolutionary. Given its time (and as a young millennial) I incorrectly assumed it was a relatively straight-forward, boring family show. Funny enough, those same crazy storylines still appear in a lot of sitcoms today. All the spin-offs recently are probably stemming from a) a desire for nostalgia from audiences and b) a lack of creativity, where building off of already-successful franchises is often an easier, faster, and potentially safer option to score ratings/views/profit from the general public.
