Part of the interview is devoid of truth. I was a member of the students union. I found the following statement of Semere not correct. a) The challenge against the University's decree of community Service wasn't first initiated by the Union. It was initiated by former students of Biet Timhirti Sewra when they were informed that the services that they did in 1992/93 will not be considered. As a former Student of Biet Timhirti Sewra I know this first hand. The Union was engaged later on and didn't play any pivotal role on this aspect. And in the first place, there was no any official declaration on this issue. It was Woldeab's idea and it soon faded after the former Biet Timhirti Sewra members discussed the issue with Minister of Education, who was supportive of the student's positon and had called immediately Woldeab to stop it. b) Students going to south Africa. I was a part of this group as well, though didn't go at last when the programme was canceled. To say the fight to drop the 150,000Nfa required deposit was spearhead by the Union is misleading. There was a committee representing the students going to SA, though, some members of this committee were also members of the student Union, myself included. The Union's involvement on this issue was way minimal. c) The information on the summer work was oki, though inconsistent. The union didn't oppose students going to summer work. Semere and a few initially opposed it, but the union resolved it in its meeting that it wasn't against the summer work programme but on the way it was handled. Remember this was in the immediate post Woyane invasion and students were still willing to serve whatsoever the case. To say 'we didn't accept the progamme' isn't realistic. I'm willing to challenge Semere on any platform on these issues.
