Claire is joined by Kevin Doyle, Minister Roderic O'Gorman and Holly Cairns TD to discuss the fact that there are now over 3,200 homeless children in the country.
Kevin Doyle stresses that the homeless figures have been above 10,000 for the past few years and it seems inexplicable that the government have not been able to reduce this figure.
Holly Cairns TD tells the panel that there's "been a 47% increase in child homelessness in the last year. And now we're going to consult the AG about potentially having a ban on evictions?"
Holly believes that "there should be a rent freeze, there should be a ban on evictions!"
In response to Holly, the Minister states "the government has to act legally."
He states that he knows "the Minister for Housing is engaging with the Attorney General in terms of the legal provisions around any potential restriction on evictions"

Easily said not so easily done. There's a labour shortage and materials are twice the price they were five years ago. We need to send the immigrants back.

Maths wouldn't be your strong point, it takes a decade to build 250000 houses, they can let 300000plus migrants into the country in 18-24months. You also need to think of the cultural and economic costs of doing this

@@mrmc2465 Common sense and empathy are obviously not yours, we've had a housing crisis since the foundation of the state 100 years ago, we've also had the same two corrupt political parties in power since the foundation of the state, back in 2006 the same incompetants were wringing their hands and saying we have too many houses, ghost estates and single builds across the country and maybe we should just bulldoze them into the ground, we had crackpot ideas like self certification, 100% loans by corrupt banks, co living, Nama and many other ridiculous practices all thought up by who ?, the same two incompetant corrupt political parties. Sure it takes time and money to build houses, they've had 100 years already and they're still making a b###### of it, so why dont you try using the common sense you think you have and see if you can spot the reality.

If they introduce a rent freeze then homeowners wont want to rent. Why should tenants pay rent if they cant be removed? it is definitely not the solution.

Their are playing King of the castle. The young people who aspire to home ownership haven`t a chance when even defaulters get to stay in houses they are not paying for. The government are still trying to keep properties off the market so prices stay high. And, this after they borrowed 160 billion euro since 2008 to reblow the bubble in property prices. Do they really expect young people to repay that 160 Billion when it was used to save the overborrowed and maintain the paper wealth of anyone with a deed? All the young get is the cost of the cement levy on top of any new build. Time to demand compulsary eviction, without legal recourse for anyone who fails to pay every single mortgage payment in full and on time. Anything less is market manipulation. We have pandered to defaulters long enough and the 160 billion it has cost us is what is really driving inflation in this country. The defaulters got their cut already. Why should they (again) be given priority over the young?

Where i live about 25% of the town centre, or more, is unoccupied houses. They are old and would need roof check, rewiring and maybe a bit more. But i believe a retrofit house could be made available much quicker than a new build. There is s croi conaithe scheme. But the vast influx if Ukrainian has not helped the housing situation

BUILDING MORE HOUSES IS WHAT IS NEEDED. Landlords will just take their properties off the market 😂 this is going to create less houses in the market

Great to put money towards it and all but where are all these builders going to come from? There is a huge shortage of labour in the construction industry. Actually in a lot of "manual labour" industries.

What's better than rent control? A tax on vacant lots and unoccupied buildings. While rent control makes it less attractive to supply accommodation, a vacant-property tax makes it less attractive NOT to! Such a tax, although sometimes called a "vacancy tax", is not limited to what real-estate agents call "vacancies" - that is, properties available for rent. It also applies to vacant lots and empty properties that are not on the rental market, and prompts the owners to put them onto the market and get them occupied in order to avoid the tax. By the way, the desired *avoidance* of the vacant-property tax would initiate economic activity, expanding the bases of other taxes and allowing their rates to be reduced, so the rest of us-including tenants, home owners, and landlords with tenants-would pay LESS tax!

There is a problem. Don't the vacant houses incur property tax? If you want to retrofit my understanding is you have to fork out and wait for reimbursement.
@GavinPutland
@GavinPutland Жыл бұрын
@@annedonnellan6876: "Don't the vacant houses incur property tax?" Presumably. But, whereas an ordinary property tax is payable whether the property is occupied or not, a vacancy tax is payable if the property is unoccupied but *not* if it is occupied. That's a stronger incentive to get it occupied. Re "retrofitting": If a property is vacant because of government action or inaction, then clearly it is intolerable that a vacancy tax be payable at that time. But if the property is vacant because of something that the owner is doing, economic logic suggests that the owner should still be given an incentive to get on with it, although political logic suggests the contrary. More generally, I'm sure that there are many ways to botch the implementation of a vacancy tax, especially if the implementation is designed by someone who opposes the principle of the tax and therefore wants to see it fail politically!
