In kebbi State and former Sokoto State (Home of the Caliphate), There are festivals that are of non-islamic origin that were performed years in years out. Example is the Argungu Fishing Festivals Even though the Kebbawa later embraced Islam, the Argungu Fishing Festival is obviously non-islamic in origin. Every year in the north-west of Nigeria, communities gather to participate in the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival near the Matan Fada River. It is also part of an ancient fertility ritual which, from the point of view of the local Kebbawa people, is the most important aspect of the occasion.
