Well if you need some ideas for future videos maybe you can ask us for suggestions. Maybe a comparison of old shows to modern movies? I know I love the fake team ups you do those are fun. There are characters from the eightys and nineties you could tackle. I think you did The Greatest American Hero but there are more obscure ones. I forget the name of the show but the guy basically could bring a video game tron type of character into the real world his car drove like the tron cars defying the laws of physics etc. I don't know if you did Isis which not sure if youtube might get triggered by her name for terror group reasons. Electra Woman and Dyna Girl perhaps? I am trying to remember other more obscure ones.

So do I. That's whom he has ALWAYS been. Marvel has had several "Captains Marvel" because they had to keep using the name -- no matter how unsuccessful the character proved to be -- to keep their copyright on the character. But there's only one TRUE Captain Marvel.

You do know they used real bullets in those old movies and serials. The cartridges held a much smaller charge of gunpowder though. You can see a metal plate protecting Tom Tyler in front of his chest in closeups where the crooks are firing at him. In the scene where the crook fires at him point blank, you can see him wince because of the impact of the bullets. Low charge notwithstanding, at that range, the bullets will still hurt! A couple good books on old serials are "To Be Continued" and "The Great Movie Serials". Great reading if you can find them. I used to watch a lot of old serials on TVOntario's Magic Shadows, hosted by the great Elwy Yost. That's where I fell in love with them. Luckily, KZfaq has quite a few of them, though The Adventures of Captain Marvel remains my favorite. Heck, I even met CC Beck at a convention in 1978. Good times...

Yeah, I think Superman was on the cover of the 1st DC Shazam book in the 70's. I've got a 70's giant magazine sized comic with Superman vs Shazam that is one of my favorites to go back and look at every now and again. Back in the 40's you got all those pages and hardly any ads which I kind of like looking at old ads, but there's not a lot of them in older books. Most of my oldest books are in the 50's and 60's. It's getting harder and harder to get books in the 40's.@@hotroddave7597

@TVCrazyman - the reason DC isn't calling him Captain Marvel is because after Fawcett went out of business and before DC Acquired the rights to the Fawcett material, Marvel Comics trademarked the name Captain Marvel (while making a completely new character for the name). Initially, DC titled the books SHAZAM! while still calling the character Captain Marvel. Over time, they made the decision to just call him Shazam, and call the wizard Shazam simply 'The Wizard'. So...the reason for the confusion with the name of this hero that dates all the way back to 1939.... is for reasons mightier than the Man of Steel and the World's Mightiest Mortal combined... legal reasons.
@ronpetersen2317
@ronpetersen2317 11 ай бұрын
It is more about Marvel being a jerk and wanting to snag the name. Then DC has been sue happy in the past. They sued over The Greatest American hero as being a rip off of Superman. Over things like usings sounds of a train indicating he was running more powerful than a locomotive and such nonsense. The dumb part is they had more grounds to sue over Green Lantern than Superman. The origin and his powers coming from a device given to him by aliens ... They borrowed a LOT more from Green Lantern than Superman. They also sued Fawcet over Captain Marvel.

Right, people started thinking his name was Shazam because that was the title they saw on the books and the 70's show, but I think those of us that were fans knew better, then like you said they decided to just go with Shazam for brand recognition, I suppose, but that didn't make as much sense in the context of the story. He'll always be Captain Marvel to me. i was never very crazy about Marvel Comics' versions, any of them, although some of the early books were pretty good, way back in the 70's.

While I do agree that Captain Marvel being called "Shazam" is ridiculous because he can't say his own name, it's good to remember that Captain Marvel Jr (AKA Freddy Freeman) always had that problem since he got his powers from Billy, not the wizard. And thus, his magic word was "Captain Marvel".

Jackson Bostwick made me a Captain Marvel fan and despite the efforts of DC Comics, there was no turning back! As for The 1943 BATMAN Serial, I'll bet you were shocked at how influential the cheesy series was on the comic book series! (I know I was when I first heard about it but seeing was believing!) I used to own it but gave it away after I bought the 1949 version! That one was also cheesy but it was less offensive to me and I liked the story a LOT more!

Yeah, I plan doing some more research but it's my understanding so far it was the first place we ever saw the batcave and it influenced how Alfred looked in the comics. I was irritated by how disrespectful Batman was to Alfred. There was one scene where he shoots a lazer at him and then basically calls him a coward for jumping. I think it was pretty bad writing. Maybe, they just sort of did it on the fly and made it up as they went along, but it was pretty boring on top of everything else.

10:09 correct! From Superman 59, Alan Shotwell story, character which actually inspired Kraven The Hunter and then inspired Back the Max Zharov in new52 Action Comics Also fan fact : heat vision (generally, some Could see them as laser eyes like Jim Starlin, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons) was always x-ray vision extension in comics up until 1986 reboot (but heat vision was still mostly invisible to human eye only now Superman's were clearly red when he used or attempted to use them,which was "invented" by Jim Starlin but only became consistent Visible to characters in the comics only after 1986 reboot) . Which was also inspired (or predicted) by Kirk Aylin version of Superman, with Superman's hairstyle being much more natural just curly hair instead of how it was past Shuster Studio era with Superman having "forced" Spit curl right on the middle. Also Kirk's version was first ever version of Superman where Both Kents alive when Clark became Superman, which was carried into comics with 1986 reboot. Before that either both Kents died in the background (original Siegel version) or Mary/Martha dies first then John/Jonathan (opposite how it is in live action after George Reeves' show and especially after Christopher Reeve's The Movie) .

I believe though that X-ray vision was invented by Max and Dave Fleischer for the cartoon "Superman and the Mechanical Monsters" where it was first used. It was later adopted by the comic. Sure would gave been a cool effect for a cartoon for viewers at the time.

There's no comparison.. Captain Marvel 's serial was far superior to anything in the Superman serials. And saying one word to change Billy Batson to Captain Marvel is a better alternative to Clark Kent wearing the costume under his suit and hiding to become Superman. I've seen all the serials so I have to go with Captain Marvel .

That's fair. I liked them both though. I guess, Captain Marvel appealed to me more on the action adventure side and the Superman was a little more fun and cartoony. Cap definitely had Supes beat on the flying scenes, but if you were a kid at the time you may have preferred Superman's cartoon version. They were definitely both better than the first Batman serial, at least in my opinion.

19:58 what's also cool is that in comics of this era (1978) Sam Lane, Lois Lane's father actually looked like older Clark Kent, also she is ginger just like Joanne Siegel (Kovacs/Carter) was who was prototype for the comics Lois Lane Also I disagree, Henry Cavill is only one who truly looks like Superman from comics, especially Shuster's original face. George Reeves inspired (or maybe Weisinger insisted on it to have synergy) Curt Swan and Al Plastino to draw his Superman (and in case of Swan literally almost every male character aside minor details like haircolor, hair length, hairstyle or freckles or lack of them) with very similar face, but that came After, same way Gary Frank and Chris Reeve. While Cavill was predicted by comics art, including the very first ones (which were amalgam of earliest Hollywood actors, but still very first Superman)

14:04 why not?! And in comics Superman actually had times when he either caused traffick accident by being clumsy like in Action Comics 14 or straight up tripped (NOT on purpose) like in Superman 47 Absolutely NOTHING about super strength or super durability stands for super perfect balance, in fact I'd argue for the opposite. Spider-Man has perfect balance because he is sticking to the surface and Daredevil is just Mary SueSue and without super powers
