TVR and Cobra in mighty Goodwood battle!

The RAC TT Celebration is Goodwood's yearly race for all things big-banger GT. It features lightweight Jaguar E-types, Lister Coupe, Corvette, Porsche 914, Ferrari 250 GTO and of course V8-powered Cobras and TVR Griffins. Although last year it took place at a different event, the TT is a regular part of the Goodwood Revival - acting as not only Goodwood's showpiece race, but also the premier race on the historic racing calendar, that means that everyone is never short of giving their absolute all.
As the 2020 race went on the V8-powered TVR Griffith of Mike Jordan and owner Mike Whitaker would engage in a tense, incredible battle with the also V8-powered Cobra of Oliver Bryant and Andrew Smith. With Jordan and Bryant at the wheel the two cars could not be separated for lap after lap, with Jordan just about grabbing the upper hand.

@@a.k.a.A.E. TVR Griffith uses a Ford V8. Probably 289 cubic inches. ...So the TVR and the Cobra could have the same size engine.

i had a replica 427 cobra it gave me a good idea what Power the cobras possessed. the 289 was a different beast if not more refined

That's not a TVR Griffin, it's a Griffith! I'm fairly sure it's just a typo, but as an American who has great respect for classic British sports cars, I feel the description should be corrected :-)

Yup, thought "Griffith", even looked at the entry list to double check... typed Griffin. Perhaps we're just hankering after a Vauxhall 🤔

I think that the origin of the name was when an American, called Jack Griffith, decided to put a V8 in the car, various issues meant that there were not many. So much as an AC Cobra started life as another AC I think that it is probably OK to call it a TVR Griffith (The first of two and a half)

@@benmarr352 Yes, the story I heard was that Mr. Griffith and Mr. Shelby were drinking, and having the kind of lively discussion you get when two car guys are drinking, and Mr. Griffith made a bet that he could make a car from his dealership as fast as a Cobra. With the advent of daylight and sobriety, Mr. Griffith found the Ford V8 fit the TVR frame surprisingly well.

They _sound_ wonderful - not singing or bellowing, but snarling - but there's plenty of other cars getting around there, more visually attractive than either of these. The Griffith is a cute little button of a car. The Cobra? It's a mutant: once a polite and well proportioned device, but it was modified into a grimly determined and bulging monster.

If the cobra is a 289, they're powered by the same engine, but the Griff is paper thin in comparison

The TVR & Cobra have the same engines, however the TVR has the edge because it's about 500 pounds lighter than the Cobra. Also driving skill & ability are major factors.

If it is it has to be built to exact original specifications and have a valid FiA HTP, but I dont think any of these are 🤔

Neither of these cars are heavy. The SBF weighs less than a Triumph six cylinder.

@RadioFlash No.8 Yes it definitely seems to be a 400 -- the taillights are distinctive. Only 59 of those were ever made, according to ye olde Wikipedia. Such a cool car!
