Washington state is poised to export 161 million tons of coal each year headed for China -- a proposal that's sparked intense debate in the Pacific Northwest. TVW that gives you a balanced look at the coal controversy and the burning questions about Washington's potential as the coal shipping capital of America.

UPDATE?? I wonder if that grape grower guy has gone broke yet? I feel for him but coal on freight trains produce more money, jobs and export than growing grapes. He will lose in the end.

I don't understand why don't they creat a cover tarp to cover these rail containers like they have them for dump trucks to prevent dust to escape, that's all they have to do is up grade the container's to prevent them for being wide open to the public during transcription on rails

34:00 The cigarette comparison is asinine because you don't benefit from smoking. Energy is a necessity for all advanced societies so comparing it to food is more appropriate. You would prefer your mother eat leaner meat like chicken instead of ground beef.

People (hippies) just hate trains in general. They'd stop grain shipments if they had a valid argument.

Nicotine does not sustain life no matter what value is derived from a smoker. Energy is an absolute necessity for a prosperous society. Reliable and cheap energy is the number one priority to get the world’s poorest out of poverty. This is the recommendation of the World Bank’s boss.

Problem number one, what makes these folks imagine that the demand for coal will rise dramatically and that each of the many depots will be used to capacity, and remain that way? It is a fools paradise, Australia is much closer to China they are building a $16 billion coal depot which will be the largest in the world.

I'm a newcomer to all this being as I live in Ireland. Not a lot of coal here. I wonder did the terminal get built at Cherry Point? Or has all this discussion been outmoded in some way, shape or form?

we were doing the research to see if there was any coal that was gettin out during transport through residential areas. I believe they finished the port up in canada and ive watched coal flow through this state on its way to a barge headed for china between 2012 to about 2016 and then it stopped all of the sudden. I think Australia has significantly increased their mining output and has been providing the bulk of chinas coal and i also believe i remember reading that in the midwest states that the coal was comming from, a lot of national and state level pressure was placed on the miners to slow down. im sure there is still coal going to china but im guessing it goes through california now and is of lesser quantity. with bulk carriers it makes sense to transport large finished goods to the US, and then fill them back up with coal on their way back (especially since china banned the us from sending them all our plastic garbage in around 2016) ironically trump really wanted to increase the coal export industry but he rubbed shoulders with china so badly im guessing they got their coal from somewhere else (australia?, indonesia?) china ran out of coal that they could mine competitively in around 2012 and now only a few providences in china mine it. this was a big deal recently as china has been having nationwide power shortages (but mostly in the North east of china) complicated issue for sure... hope u have a good day

Boy, you people really like beating up on the railroad. Lets all just ask the question of whom was here first you (70-80) years or the railroad who built the entire country from the ground up over 200 years ago. If you dont like trains move away from the tracks. simple as that.

Those studies from Stanford are just that, studies. It will be decades (if even then) before they become practical for the richest nations to adopt. I suppose all the environmentalists would prefer China and India wait for these technologies to become affordable before they continue to grow their economies.

NO MORE COAL TERMINALS, NO MORE COAL TRAINS. Up here, we value our clean air and water, we value our fisheries, and we have a hard time trusting an industry that thinks its ok to completely blow the tops off of hundreds of Appalachian mountains, that thinks its ok to pump mercury and lead into our air, that fights regulations to clean emissions and save human lives,

The cigarette comparison is perfectly valid. Smokers derive a value from smoking; but the value derived is not worth the destructiveness of the product. Addtionally, there are nondestructive alternatives to cigarettes. The analogy is nearly perfect: There are plenty of alternatives to coal. Recent studies by Stanford, NREL, Univ. of Delaware and others say technologies are ready to begin shifting to 80 to 90% renewable energy by 2050. That presumes decreasing (not increasing) coal dependency.
