Rick shaking his head to Shane in the flashback that he didn’t want to to kill Gareth with the red machete in the church or ripping Joe’s throat out. But he had to in order to protect what he calls his family. And that’s how far they have gotten through and survived with Rick. After his departure in the series the group is learning to survive different ways and stepping up. But constantly still having enemies while trying to live in an apocalyptic world.
