I first watched this video in middle school, while still barely conversational in english, understanding very little and stayed mainly for the songs and images. Since then, I have rewatched this video many times and each time I watch, there are always so much that i didn’t catch the last time. This is truly one of the best video on the internet.

As an organic apple orchardist, I have to DISAGREE…..But then, what do I know, except that a 100 years from now I truly believe that the creativity/tonality/harmony/melody of "All the Things You Are" will still be appreciated, sung and enjoyed….while "Mary had a Laser Bat" will be long forgotten….loooooong ago, far away forgotten. That is just my opinion, of course….as an organic apple orchardist (from the 'old school' of apple picking).

This is actual genius. I don't know if you're still reading comments on this video over eight years later, but the insight packed into this thirty-minute video, along with the clarity of its expression, makes it an incredible achievement. Like, I could feel everything I thought I knew about the creative process melt away with the "navigating an exponentially complex branching tree" visualisation, and then you hit me with what it means for something to mean something, and then the beauty of those 12-tone compositions, I mean, there's so many different elements to this video and all of them pull their weight, like all the points on, well, a 12-sided star... I feel like I've gotten so used to formulaic video essays that I can just put on 2x speed and absorb, but this is something that's going to stay with me for a while. Thank you.

343 likes but three replies @@the-0-endless376 no, its actually because for sound recordings its a complicated mess, in 2022 all sound recordings from a 435 hz pitch fork from 1859 to i don't recognize any of these songs from 1922 enter the public domain on the 1st of January 2022, after that, all recordings will be protected for 100 years instead of 95 until 2047 where nothing enters the public domain because guess what, and im not making this up, its now 110 years for some reason, so now we are in this weird era where movies are going to be in the public domain but not the sound itself. So you wait 10 years and finally sound recordings are now entering the public domain again in 2058, but then all in one swoop,in an unfateful February of 2067 all of the sound recordings made between 1957 and exactly 95 years ago being February 15th 1972 enter the public domain at the same time, and now you can enjoy copyright law being normal, until the 2070s when the United States finally gets +70 years in 2047, so that means that for example Stephen King's "The Shining" from 1977 would enter the public domain in 2073, but "The Shawshank Redemption" from 1982 would enter the public domain sometime after 2093 as Stephen King is still alive.

Same. The abstraction and strings of intuition presented in a "cute and funny way" as to not scare listeners off is something I would've only credited to myself. She, however,, has the resolve to stay through with her ideas until a product like this is done, has more years of experience than me, and of course she's a cutie female. Makes me withdraw into my defensive philosophy of "lol its not about competition anyway just let things be" who knows where that actually leads

I've been using KZfaq since 2007, and this is my favorite video. I have rewatched this dozens of times, and I always catch something new. This time, it was keenly noticing how she set up the mutability of context in the intro. When she rewrites "Owl and the Pussy Cat," into "Fowl and the Pussy Bat," she drops a beat and then says "How about Laser Bat?" without explanation. Then when she changes "Fowl into Bowl, because Laser Bat sounds so much cooler. Then she adds "...but we all know it's a bird bowl." She used that setup to teach a lesson in the way that context is created. The Bird Bowl is drawn through the rest of the video... But if you hadn't seen the initial explanation, it makes no sense. However, this time I noticed that she does not give any explanation for the connection between "pussy" and "laser." Later in her video, she talks about unexplained leaps in meaning that are anchored by experience, which leads me to assume that the connection (at least in a pre-GOOP world) was a cheeky nod toward intimate laser hair removal.

As an starting musician, this got to be one of my favourites music related videos, I mean, I've watched a lot of Adam Neely's videos, a lot of other music youtubers, but this single video mixes creativity with didacticism and of course, musicality. and also YOU BREAK A LOT OF RULES, that's why I find this kind of videos far more interesting, it breaks rules instead of going overthere creating new ones, shamefully I can't click the like button twice.

Thanks for making this. Whenever I wander upon it, I always end up feeling refreshed and inspired in my own work. The amount of thought, heart, and time you put into this really shines through, even all this time later. Every time I’ve taken something new out of it. That, I think, is what makes a work of art meaningful and great. This is probably my favorite essay on this platform. The beauty of the associations you make in this thing honestly chokes me up a little. I really love it.

Vi, you should be the math, science, and music teacher at every school everywhere. If we ever create cloning devices, that should be the first order of business. You present complex information in the most pleasing of ways. Most of the time, I am not the most intellectually inclined person. For the most part, I didn't like classes other than theatre or music. But I loved this video. Even with my severe ADD, the video managed to keep my attention for the full 30 minutes without clicking away then coming back. Thank you Vi!

It all has to do with context, like the author states. It depends on what you've been encouraged to see as patterns in the randomness. If you lived in the medieval period, certain combinations of pitches would have sounded good to you- some were thought of as pure and holy; and some as satanic. By the baroque period a new set of 'rules' was established. This helped to form the 'popular' music of the era. If, however, you were raised in anon-western culture, your ideals of what is 'good' music might be completely different again. It has to do with what you're conditioned to believe.

Both true, Liam Smith and loverlyme. But "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" (copyrighted) if musical performances could tuned again to the Verdi Tuning (A)? Fact: When listening to classical music, however Tuned, but always with resolved dissonance, Cows produce more milk. Just an opinion…from a down-to-earth country person.
