Hearing all twenty of these amazing snare drums back to back in two minutes is absolutely awesome. Alright, to be fair it's more like 2 minutes and 38 seconds, lol. But hey, twenty snare drums in under three minutes ain't too shabby right? I hope you all enjoy this wonderful mix of modern and vintage snare drums from my personal collection. 🍵🙏🍵 #snaredrums #vintagedrums

It’s a really interesting topic ✔️ It also has a lot to do with how the snare pitch make us perceive the kick. There’s an interesting interview with Jeff Porcaro (floating around somewhere), where he speaks about this subject a bit.

What a great and incredibly informative snare drum comparison video! Drummers of the pre-KZfaq era (and I am one of them) could not have imagined that this type of audio and visual information would eventually be available - and at zero cost. We are so fortunate to have this amazing content at our fingertips, and so fortunate that Mike and other creators put in the time and effort to provide it to us. BTW, I thought the Brooklyn Standard had the warmest and most appealing sound.

Gonna time stamp this, for later reference: 0:00 - A&F Raw Steel (14 x 5) 0:08 - 1960s Slingerland Radioking (14 x 5.5) 0:15 - Ludwig Black Beauty (14 x 6.5) 0:22 - Rogers Dynasonic Reissue (14 x 5) 0:30 - Dunnett Classic Titanium (14 x 6) 0:37 - Bucks County Oak (14 x 5.5) 0:44 - 1920s Ludwig NOB (14 x 4) 0:52 - Doc Sweeny Myrtle (14 x 5.5) 0:59 - Gretsch USA Custom Copper (14 x 6.5) 1:07 - DW Custom Birch (14 x 5.5) 1:14 - A&F Raw Brass (14 x 5) 1:21 - Sugar Percussion Poplar (14 x 5) 1:29 - A&F "Rude Boy" Raw Brass (13 x 3) 1:37 - 1965 Gretsch Name Brand (14 x 5.5) 1:43 - Drum Supply Aluminum (14 x 5.5) 1:51 - Brooks Steam Bent Maple (14 x 4.5) 1:58 - A&F Raw Copper (14 x 5) 2:06 - 1929 Ludwig Super Sensitive (14 x 5) 2:13 - Gretsch Brooklyn Standard, the Mike Jhonston Signature Snare (14 x 5.5) 2:20 - Modern Drummer Cherry (13 x 6) Personally, the Drum Supply Aluminum surprised me the most, and I think it's my favorite on this recording. The DW Custom Birch was also really good, kind of a more controled version of the aluminum. But like everything, these will all sound completely different (probably worse) under my hands, and every situation calls for a different snare. Great video man!

Super helpful vidoe. Seems I liked the more old school vintage-sounding snares, and the shallower, wood, or copper ones. Loved the sound of the 1960 Slingerland Radio King. Then my two favourites were the1965 Gretsch Name Band and that dark, short, punchy Rogers Dynasonic reissue. Liked the tighter sound of the DW Custom Birch and shallower Brooks Steam Bent Maple too, kind of in the rough ballpark of the Slingerland, for a more recent snare. Sugar Poplar was cool too. I had less love for the deeper-toned Ludwig, apart from the shallow 1929 Ludwig Super Sensitive which was super nice. And I least liked the Steel, Aluminum or Titanium snares. But I really loved those snappy A&F Brass, and especially the mellower Copper one.

The classic Dyna was always a top notch snare drum. Buy after being out of the business for nearly 4 decades, they enter a market flooded with top notch competition & stand out!
