UPDATE: Fixed an audio hick-up.
The Star Wars mythos spans several millennia, many races and several continuities. As such it can be a tricky series to navigate but here's our attempt to shed some light on once of its most popular alien species, the head-tendriled-Twi'Lek.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.

I know this is older vid, but just 1 minor correction, both genders of twi'lek have human like teeth however most males (and some females) filed them to points for what ever reason.

I would like to know the history of humans in the Star Wars galaxy. We know that they don't come from our Earth as they are from "a galaxy far far away" but they don't seem to have a home planet and for some reason they are just widespread across the galaxy and not under some governing body of all humanity, they really are just there.

In the old EU there was a cancelled book which would have explained that the first humans in the Star Wars Galaxy were abducted from earth.

She’s a togruta and the way to know the differences are that one has 2 or 4 lekku and one has 3 lekku, one has montral(horns) and other don’t

Nice to see Star Wars finally getting some attention. Looking forward to Mandalorian, Hutt, Wookie, Kaleesh and Trandoshan. Do Sith and Jedi count? They are a culture, afterall... Another setting you might tackle in the future is Warhammer 40,000 and possibly Endless Space and Galactic Civilizations.

The original species (and possibly the Hybrid descendants) would count in regards to the Sith, but i don't think the Jedi would.

40k would be pretty hard as the imperium alone has thousands of different entirely unique cultures. From the gold plated slums of terra to the jungles of catachan. .

Jedi themselves do not count, but root of they culture goes back to Dai Bendu order who composed of non-human beings called "Talid".

Sith was a race but Jedi is just an ideology, any race can be a jedi or a dark side user (commonly called sith) but the Sith were orginally a race ,before they went extinct or got so mixed up into other races that they became indistingwishable.

There's also the fact that female twi'lek are considered ravishing i.e delightful or entrancing by males of other species, which they don't appear to have a problem with.

This was good. The new canon did not do as much damage to the Twi’leks as I feared they would. However I still wish that the more robust old canon was still around considering how much more diverse their culture was.

And Swtor refrences them as being made by the mother machine on belsalvis along with a few other near humans implying they are also Near human. Appearently there are ways to make hybrids. weather this is natural or artifical hybridization is unknown and holds the key to their status as humanoid or near human. As near humans are more like sub races. One has to wonder though exactly how much do they eat or rather how little they eat. Given how many resturants and bars are in human culture and how eating out is a social activity would a health concious twilek living with humans eat smaller meals or fewer meals. The twilek have always interested me in how they're similar to humans but must have holes in the back of their skulls given the base of the lekku are said to contain brain tissue.In addition Ive always wondered what their digestive system must look like to have 2 stomachs in the same space as the human body. Despite there being basicly nothing about them How about them Miraluka? use the force to see and apperntly cant see colors.

Subscribed! You have really good videos, I'm shocked you don't have more followers. Do you think you could do anything from the Bionicle universe? It may not be sci-fi strictly speaking and it's ridiculously complex, but it was my all-time favorite universe as a kid and still is to this day. I would love a video on the culture of the Makuta in particular. "I bore you. For I am Nothing. And out of Nothing, you came. And it is into Nothing you will go. I stand by Mata Nui, side by side. What is not mentioned in the video is the fact that some Twi'lek even joined the Jedi i.e Aayla Secura, Alema Rar. One even joined the sith i.e Darth Talon. Granted Alema Rar and Darth Talon are both from the new Republic era within the expanded universe which is now non-canon but personally that's not the point. The point is all three are Twi'lek and that's why I brought them up.

I’m not sure if this is canon or legends but I remember hearing that Ryloth is orbitally locked. Meaning that one side of the planet always faces the sun and is a scorching desert and the other is a frozen wasteland shrouded in eternal night. Only a thin band of twilight is inhabitable and this the name Twi’lek.

What about doing a cultural index entry on dexter jettster's species the besalisk. Hell jedi master Pong Krell was one of them. Although they seem to provide very little by way of material goods that is made up for by them being very versatile when it comes to their skills in other words they provide more in what they can do for you and what they can give you if dexter jettster is there any indication they are loyal to their friends to the hilt even to the point of self sacrifice.

In Legends, wasn't Ryloth a tidally locked red dwarf planet, with one side in perpetual daylight and one side perpetual night? With the Twi'leks themselves confined to the "twilight zone" of their world? I remember reading that, I think in the Essential Guide to Alien Species. It could explain their name too -- Twi'lek = Twilight dwellers with lekku. It's a shame that the new Disney canon didn't keep with that, especially since there are a *lot* of RL exoplanets being found that could be similar.

I'd expect it's less 'abandon Twi'lek tradition for the galactic culture' than it is the galactic culture is all they've ever known. It isn't as if culture is genetically determined; that's part of what makes it _culture._

Fun fact in the EU Lore the Twi'leks were created by the Rakata by accident when they terraformed Ryloth. Hence why a nickname for the Rakata was The Builders.

I don't understand why they would be afforded a senate seat in the republic. I mean, compared to all of the worlds with populations probably in the trillions, heavily engaged in trade and technological development, it seems strange to involve them in such a direct manner as having a seat in the senate. It feels like allowing some obscure Papua New Guinean stone age tribe membership in the UN general assembly.

i might be wrong but a red Twilek isn't a rare thing. the red Twilek is a sith and her skin has been dyed. maul had the same thing down I could be wrong but it could down as a sign of remembrance of the sith species and over time the meaning was lost cause maul had it down and in legacy it was done as well.

then i guess i was wrong I was under the impression that the Twi'lek change their skin to the red cause it reminds people the sith was a species and where the sith came from. it made sense to me cause i cannot recall any twi'leks with red and remember Maul with red skin and put two together

Nope. Red Twi'lek are called "Lethan" and the red skin tone(s) are result of a very rare (natural) genetic mutation. The most famous Lethan Twi'lek in Legends is Darth Talon, while the one in the video above is Darth... something, who was in charge of Korriban's defenses when the Zakuul twins invaded. Maul was a Dathomirian Zabrak, by the way.

I know this will sound small-minded and incensetiv but, the only reason why they are relevant is the Twi'lek & Togruta women are beautiful and sexually sought after by the human species in the Galaxy ! IMO 😎
