thanks man. there was a time when there were a few good car and motorcycle shows. when Discovery channel very first started doing bike build off episodes, they were cool. no drama. just building bikes. then...they had to throw in ridiculous challenges, time frames, faked supplier issues, etc to keep viewers. Then the OCC Jerry Springer show started and it became far less about the bikes. Those shows did give a much needed boost to the industry though so hard to be too rough on it. If you know any production companies that wanna do a pitch, what the heck...im in....but i get to choose the content. LOL

Just getting to watch, wow...that is why we had no oil pressure . Darrell said he didn't realize it was that bad. Scary stuff when you think about if we had not stopped riding it before we even brought it to you. We could have caused more damage to the bike or worse, we could have been hurt if it locked down going down the road. Enjoyed watching you take it apart and seeing the damage as you see it. Thanks for all you are doing to fix our bike.

My 13 Street Glide had 10,000 crank run out. Tore it apart and put a Dark Horse signature series crank in which was dead nuts. Couldn’t be happier with that $1700 decision. Great video brother. 👊

I am about to pull my 103 out of my 2009 Trike for a stripped bolt supporting the torsion plate on the front cylinder. I have watched pretty much all your videos and so much for a simple fix without doing a whole lot more due diligence. A smart technician is one that leaves all questions answered. I always enjoy the videos and information that Mr. Baxter provides. These talks and series are pure gold and a veritable trove of concise, indispensable reference material. Best of all Mr Baxter makes it all easily found and catalogued for free!!! I dare you to ask someone else divulge all the knowledge and techniques that he/she uses to house, feed and clothe their family. Kudos and a great big thanks go out to Mr. Baxter. Glad to hear this motor is getting a Hoban brothers Darkhorse crankshaft and compensator. Those items are amazing products. Just had my 07 FLHX with a tad over 35k on the odometer bumped up from 96ci to 107ci and had those installed in my build. Much like the engine in this video, I found that my bike had a significant crank issue that was yet undetected but my bike was on the verge of catastrophic failure. Instead of a manual chain tensioner I went with a Southern Oregon Hot Bikes hydraulic chain tensioner and I love how stable the drivetrain feels now, especially how much the shifting has improved. I can't wait to see the next installment in this series!

Have the same 96 ci Twin Cam on my 2010 Road Glide. So far, mine is running good at 48 K. It's great seeing the inner workings of this particular motor. You are a top notch motorcycle mechanic.

That much carbon is why I've chosen an EBS for my Dyna. A catch can and some plumbing will mitigate the build up. Great videos Kevin. I've visited many channels... And you're by far the most knowledgeable. That, and you're able to explain these issues in lay terms. Keep it up. 👍🏽🤙🏽

You are pretty strong, lifting out that motor, brother Kevin. Liked the wooden block stand. Noticed how an extra set of hands is a winner when lifting to the cart, and breaking loose bolts, etc. I’ve been that “second man” so many times as I am apprenticing and have worked at a few shops… this is a humbling craft and i’m grateful to be involved. I had a 2008 CVO, 110 CID. Went thru 4 compensators of varying HD design revisions, 3 sets of lifters, cams, oil pump, cam bearings, etc. in 127,000 miles. Always had to wipe out the SE air cleaner at 500 miles so not to wet the air filter. It was fitted only with Stage 1 (hi-flow air cleaner, Rinehart Tru duals, and dynoed). Traded for a new 2016 SE Ultra Ltd, 110 motor, liquid-cooled) - have not had an issue in 40,000 miles. Have RC exhaust, it came with hi-flow air cleaner, dynoed so no decel pop. Runs great still. Only odd noise I get is what sounds like a loose primary chain when I let the RPMs get low (1600 or so). Love your show, keep 'em coming!!

I ride a 16 SGS with a 103... I think I'm sumping, not sure. Went to Sturgis from Winnipeg, over 3500 Kms total, down over a quart of oil. Plugs are clean, very little oil in the breather. Primary is where it should be. I have to pay a HD dealership to do a bunch of tests. I wish I could do this as my 9-5... Great content Mr. Baxter!

That motor is junk for Harley to put that in a bike imo is almost criminal for a person to have to pay for that and now have to pay to rebuild it that's the way you lose customers!

Thank you for the education on twin cam engines. I have been riding a TC88B for quite some time now and it helps me to know what’s going on in the motor. If I could afford it I would have the runout checked on my motor and also switch to a manual tensioner on the primary. My bike/engine has about 64k miles on it. Thanks again.

Another great series of videos Kevin. I did the whole new compensator and chain tensioner last winter along with new cams, cam plate, lifters, pushrods and oil pump at 25k miles. No issues all riding season but watching this video what other issues can I look for that can tell if it’s sumping?

Sure is different from my old 62. You really are helping me get familiar with these newfangled computer motorsickles.. I'll guess I'll ride this Rushmore Road Glide until it makes racket and then crank the throttle to get that there catastrophic thing you talked about. At least it will be exciting!

Love the videos - It seems to me like the most true to original and most reliable Harley are still the sportsters. My 07 sportster - had 20k miles when I sold it (all put on by myself) never had an issue just basic maintenance and was dead simple to work on myself.

I had the witness grooves as well on my 07 FLHT and came to that same determination- Thanks for verifying this Issue. I did also find that my starter ring gear had spun and was not flat or true. I put a straight edge on it to find the 12/6/3/9/position and tack welded i, lightly, had same issue and removed factory chain tensioner and put in a Hayden rewelded it a bit more penetration. I hated that welding was my only option, at the time but the welds being consistent and some grinding no major issues. I should have drill and use set screws like in the gear box maintenance manufacturing environment. this is just a FYI if anyone needs to make a repair.

I gotta say .... I love how you handle wrenching on fasteners,,, by hand... let me clarify a little..... I worked on specialised pressure gauges for 20+ years. To be more specific,,, I worked on the movements ( analog gauges ) so all my tightening,,,, un tightening were done with human power lol that has carried over to wrenching on my bike. lots of torque specs also keep up the good work

Just replaced my original 2018 oil pump with the new 8 lobe version to get rid of occasional up hill oil light and better scavenging for the Stage 2 torque cam and SE HP lifters. At what mileage would you recommend my M8 have the runout checked? I’m at 21,670 mi.’s on my 114 FLHCS.

I need to save some money and schedule a rebuild with you guys. 2017 RGS / 16,000 miles with a lot of heat and blow by. Dealer says all is well of course.

Another great production. I had 48k on my 2007 when I sold it. I heard through a friend the guy that bought it started having problems about a year after he bought it. Mine was a 103 so the jugs and pistons were replaced at about 15k. I’m thinking I may need a manual primary chain tensioner for my 19 RGS.

That was a great video! I can only imagine what some of my components might look like on my ’15 103” with 65k on it... 🤔. I’m hoping to hit 100k before it needs a major tear down but only time will tell...🤷🏻‍♂️. It does seem to have plenty of blow-by by the looks of the air filter but that’s been a problem since day one for this bike.

I really enjoy your channel, cause I enjoy Harleys and your knowledge of them, VERY informative, but it can be a little depressing since I mainly bought my last bike to ride, not to work on or lay in bed at night wondering if it is dying inside. I bought a 2002 FLHTPI and it is very sweet, stock Police, it only had 29k on it and I thought, wow, I won't have to do anything to this for???????, anyway after watching a lot of your videos I find there is really quite a few problems that are gonna come up with all of them, it seems like my year is not as drastic as some though. I will be opening the cam chest soon and have my fingers crossed that there is nothing wrong yet and will update it with a billet plate and chain, & sprockets and hyd. tensioners. One thing that really bothers me is the flywheels just pressed together so at some point I will rebuild it and get them trued and welded. THAKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING ALL YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM! :{)

Just rebuilt mine due to compensator spring & washer failure. Eliminated the compensator spring, weld & heat treated compensator & spacer. Not too many harley parts was reinstalled.

After watching these videos I've learned so much. Wrenching on my 02 88tc for the first time really and it being my 1st Harley it has helped a lot. In this video, my biggest question is why wouldn't Harley put a drain plug in the bottom of that crankcase so you could drain out any large amount of oil like that? Obviously, the pump should have picked it back up but wouldn't letting it drain for an hour really clear a lot of that up or would it have come back within 50 miles? I guess I need to study the oiling system in the manual.

The pre-07 compensators were pretty much bulletproof. Harley really shit the bed when the redesigned it for the 07 model year. Been nothing but headaches ever since.

This is a very informative video thank you. Now I have a 08, and a 10 96 ci harley. This video is making me sum what nervous. They both have approximately 20 thousand miles on them. Short off tearing the mtrs down can you please tell me what to look for before I have a major break down. Do I look for the carbon build up? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This is why I pull the drain plug on the sump of my 2005 and measure the oil.

Subscriber here - Did the tight primary chain pull on the crank and cause the excessive runout and all the related issues? Could this primary chain binding scenario actually induce crank runout due to the end result of scissoring or flapping between the crank halves? Your videos have greatly affirmed the necessity for the rules of parallelism and perpendicularity in the design and functioning of these engines. You're in a skill and technical league by yourself!

Good video! I was a bit confused regarding the primary disassembly; were saying one of those shafts wasn't true and that's why there was evidence of rubbing on the inner wall of the primary? And it was also causing the oil leaking into the base of the motor? Thank you.

Just liked and subscribed. Seeing this makes me want to pull my crank on my 04 Fatboy, have it trued, and welded, but at 71, maybe it will last as long as I will. Kevin, ain't there a 1/4 " allen plug on bottom to drain sump. More than 4 oz. and there is a problem, right.

On rebuild, are you willing to detail the Man-of-war compensator install with adjustments and what you look for when installing ,even with new parts ( Clutch basket assembly and compensator)? There are virtually no videos out there on this unit.

Wonder what primary tensioner you're going to pair with that Darkhorse comp. If I recall correctly from the Darkhorse podcast they did r&d with the stock auto primary adjuster. Perhaps they used the updated version.

My M8 workshop manual says (in the bike) change out crank if at 12 thousands OR change out at 5 thousands in a truing stand. ? Huh? That's alot, and confusing. Great video. 🙂👍

If you check it in the bike, bearing clearance will show up too. That is why the .012 in the bike. .005 on a truing stand is far more accurate.

At 38k miles my M8 oil light would intermittently stay on after starting motor. Shut off and restart, sometimes took 3-4 restarts before light would go off after start. Caused scoring on crank and other issues. Awaiting new motor from HD
