Today I lost the left engine on the Twin Commander and had to make and Emergency Landing. Turns out it was the #3 cylinder exhaust valve guide broke and the valve was wiggling around. Now I get to drive back up to the airport where I left her to take a new cylinder to get it fixed.

Probably the best twins on the market, and even now, there is still a demand for them. In March this year my business partner flew from Australia to Ohio to ock up our "NEW" 690B with the dash10 turbine engines. We flew 7 legs across the ocean to Japan then onto Indonesia before finally landing in Darwin. From Darwin it was non stop to our destination . Was a perfect flight sitting at 36,000ft with the auto pilot doing most of the work, while we scanned to instrument panel for any signs of problems, especially crossing vast expanses of water. Then checking our route and charts for areas we had never been to. We were welcomed with open arms , where ever we landed, the Aero Commander agents who were there to meet us, went out of their way to check the aircraft and service the engines, with no cost to us ,except for fuel and oil. Today the 690 is flying almost seven days a week, to remote places around Australia where other twins wont and cant get in our out. We had some modifications done to the exterior landing lights. We swopped the 100W landing lights for HID 55W lights in the wings, the oleo struts and in the nose. Makes an enormous light spread on unfamiliar territory

When that controller asked you if you wanted to declare an emergency, he was really hinting that he'd prefer you to declare an emergency. There is no downside to declaring, and plenty of upsides. The aftermath of the 4 I've declared in 43 years of flying was never more than a short pleasant phone conversation with the authorities.

K Cowdrey I agree with “fly the plane first” but there was ample time to declare with clear communication established. It’s safer for everyone and makes it easier on the ATC. Excellent job by the pilot though. Easy to critique when not in the seat.

Enjoyed the video. Always a fan of Aero Commanders as I grew up in Oklahoma City and learned to fly at Downtown Airpark who was the first Aero Commander dealer and painted all the new ones. I was line chief at DTA in early 60’s. Owned my own 500 in the 90’s and loved it. Handled like a puppy dog on one engine with that monster vertical stabilizer.

Ahhh.. I always really enjoy these videos. Not for the video content, entertainment, or even educational value, but rather the opportunity to relish in the wisdom and musings of so many “aviation masters” in the comments. Rarely will so many experts gather on one forum and share their expertise. Doesn’t matter if the video portrays seasoned, professional pilots, who have dedicated their entire life to their profession, we will all read reasons to NOT be impressed. It’s through the criticism of others, that these keyboard Captains try to impress us with “their” expertise. It’s clear, one need not waste time, training and honing their skills as an aviator. By simply reading the comment section of these videos, one can benefit from the teachings of the TRUE masters of the skies, who gather here. When they post their wisdom and insight in comments, scribes record every word, so future generations of pilots may benefit from their teachings. I for one, am humbled in their presence and thank them all for their guidance. 🇺🇸🇺🇸 Great video Glenn, nice job !

Perfect flight, made every decision perfectly. Not his first flight engine out, that's practiced and instinctive response. No comment on the declaration, I wasn't there or PIC. I was enjoying the scenery that's hard to get but in a high wing. Gotta say, in an engine out, I'd be ok. No one in the air who doesn't know the plan. Luckily where I live and fly, flat as a pancake. Would I be as calm as this guy? Oh hell no LOL! Pick up an octave in the voice, increase the rate of speech, head on a swivel scanning - and then realize ...it's all good. I had a FI who was a dik at throwing emergencies at me all the damn time right when he had me relaxed, kicking back then BOOM! ..... He had a way, you are going to remember those moments, especially the first ones that scared the hell out of you because you thought it was real. Really was the fun stuff that will keep you alive.
