Can a plane like this transport a boat (23 ft, 2600 lbs) under the fuselage? Are there services that do this type of thing?

One of my favorite classic turboprops of all time. I also like the Viking Air Twin Otter 400, although I haven't seen much of it since its introduction. My favorite of the post-modern Canadian de Havillands, though, is still the Dash-8 Q400.

Great video. Kind of surprised that the port engine is started whilst still moored to the jetty; that dockhand(?) seems to have to get awfully near to the prop to cast off the forward mooring. Also is it normal to take off with the rear mooring line trailing like that?.

Who left the rope hanging off the port side ski ,now flapping about behind the plane ?
@sberry2303
@sberry2303 9 жыл бұрын
toby london The rope stays on the heel of the port side float. When the aircraft taxis to the the dock the pilot heels in the port float, dock hand grabs the rope and ties it to the dock.

TheHDAviation the Twin Otter doesn’t have water rudders, so the only way to change our direction or speed is with propeller pitch angle and thrust (Forward/Reverse/Beta or Neutral)

@largol33t1
@largol33t1 9 жыл бұрын
Mirandorl I've been told by some floatplane pilots that it takes just as much skill to maneuver the plane to the dock. They said the tough part is trying to be VERY gentle with the throttle when you're only a foot from the wooden planks. One pilot said he saw another airline make that very mistake and chaos resulted. The pilot put a bit too much power into one engine. The plane jerked into an unintended turn and banged one of its floats on the dock. The impact broke some of the supporting arms on one side. Because there was no support, the entire starboard side of the plane slammed on top of the dock and the engine was destroyed. Fortunately, no passengers or dock workers were injured. The poor plane was declared a total loss. It takes extra nerves to fly this plane AND taxi it properly. I have a lot of respect for bush pilots who have to fly these kinds of floatplanes into countries where airports are nothing more than boards on a bunch of old tires strung along a beach. My dad sees a LOT of these planes in the Caribbean since it's such a handy "island hopper." This plane is such a successful design that a company was founded to restore them with modern avionics to keep them flying. I find it interesting that so much has been replaced/upgraded that it's legal in some countries to sell them as "zero hour" (aka "brand new") planes! It's easy to spot them inside: they have tons of digital screens in the cockpit but they are still DeHavilland planes. If I could fly any plane, I'd love to fly a Twin Otter.
