A chopper delivers fuel for a Twin Otter to a remote beach in the Canadian Arctic. The Twin Otter (equipped with tundra tires) departs from an extremely short distance on the "runway" which is actually a beach.

Simply one of the greatest planes ever built, so much so it is still in production after 50 years with the Series 400. A testament to a fantastic design.

When I was in the Military and doing one of two tours in Eureka, on Ellesmere Island. I watched a Ken Borek twin otter land across the runway. The winds were sooooo strong, we didn’t think he would land, Nope wrong. Beautiful job! Also seen those planes so overloaded with freight, baggage and passengers, oh and with a 45 gallon drum of fuel with a hose into it for the plane to use in addition to its own fuel tanks.

The aggressive angle of their wings allow them to take off on such short notice, just a work horse a plane. Such a good design that they started building them brand new again.

First time on a plane was a Twin Otter seaplane taking off from Penn's Landing on the Delaware River in the mid 70's when I was around 5 or 6 years old.

Not really tundra tires, those are called intermediates, the tundra tires are a lot bigger and are the same size as a DC3 main landing gear tire. They do use the intermediate nose landing gear tire while running the larger tires on the mains though. 👌

This is why the Twin Otter a is the preferred aircraft for these conditions.

That looks exactly like my time spent with Canamera during the diamond rush, right down to the tents on the beach and the jet ranger. We flew Ptarmigan airways and I think Tinde.

Any idea where this is ? I worked in the Arctic for several summers and pushed a Bell 204-B through the friendly skies. Worst place I ever got stuck because of weather was on Devon Island, along the Penny Strait. Most Arctic beaches are like this. Nobody running to the water!

In arctic bomb cyclone wind conditions the Otter is a VTOL aircraft and only needs a landing pad in such powerful wind conditions

Seems like a pretty standard soft field takeoff. Get the plane off the ground as soon as you can and stay in ground effect, really cool plane none the less and the beach runway looks kind of fun

Was wondering why the urgency to get airborne. Seemed unnecessary but your explanation makes sense.

Cold air at sea level plus headwind.. that makes a big difference . I live in the tropics(colombia) at 5000 feet and those twin otters take much, much longer to get airborne here

id love to be there!!!! I am a technician but not a scientist ;) It would be nice to get away from civilization. I was once a helicopter mechanic but love to be a pilot, or a arctic explorer.

The single large propeller otter doesn't have much range 300 miles? Kerosene turbines are ok with me. I don't advise smoking on these airplanes.
