This was probably was one of the saddest scenes in Twin Peaks despite the jovial mood. Leland is obviously breaking up at the loss of Laura but he does not get any sympathy, and turning his misery into a dance was twisted. Only Audrey is upset by what is happening.

This is 18th scene with Audrey and also the second scene when she is not depicted as a spoiled, nosy girl, who only thinks about eavesdropping for fun, dancing, smoking cigs and flirting with FBI agents. I think this scene shows the transition of Audrey - she begins to think about other people, not only herself. In other words, she decides to carry out her private investigation in order to do good, and not just to win the heart of Cooper.
@BimberMistrz
@BimberMistrz 14 жыл бұрын
It also shows that underneath she's a good, tender person - only she feels empathy for Leland. Others are either unaware what's going on (Icelanders) or focused on their own businesses (Horne brothers). Audrey is in fact one of the most innocent and good willing characters in the series. Which doesn't mean she can't handle herself and play tough when needed. That's why she's so awesome :)

Jeez, that was so freaking sad. At first I was like "oh boy, there he goes again", but when everyone started dancing while completely ignoring Leland's (quite obvious) breakdown and his sobbing... That was fucked up. I mean, it's been only several days since he lost his daughter, and yet no one cares. Why couldn't any of the Hornes just take the poor guy out of the room and at least try to calm him down?

This is one of the best scenes ever filmed. The format is that of a comedic scene and it is presented and acted as such. But it's not funny, nor is it meant to be. It is incredibly sad, disturbing and even horrifying. The reason that I love it is because of its unfiltered humanism. What we are witnessing is the pure distillation of the absence of compassion. The despair that we feel we are not carrying alone because there is someone crying with us. Not only that, but that someone is one who perceived herself to be heartless in her own right, but revealed herself as human once the true face of inhumanity revealed itself to her. We are creatures of inspiration, not complacency, and we should expect more from ourselves. And each other.

This really hits me on such an emotional level. I underwent a serious trauma in my youth, at which I began to close up to everyone to the point that everyone thought it was my "normal" and put on happy faces as I was torn apart inside. The emotions that run through you as you begin to break down while everyone still wears their happy masks is like a torrential mixture of loneliness, anger, jealousy, and crippling depression.

i never quite understood why Audrey was crying here. she didn't care about laura, this scene didn't have anything to do with her relationship with her dad, and this is the opposite of the audrey who goes off to one eyed jack's. i dont buy her as a cryer, i guess. (or a teen? that too)

This is a super late reply, but I always assumed she was crying because the situation perfectly encapsulated everything that scared/horrified her about the town and the adults around her. Leland is having a breakdown but instead of showing him empathy, his co-workers and supposed friends quickly cover it up as quirky dancing to save-face in front of the investors. It's everything Audrey hates about the people around her - they're more interested in how they look on the outside than how their family feels on the inside.
@johnnyboyonthetube

another super late reply, but i think her crying here does have to do with her father! if i remember correctly, this scene takes place almost immediately after she finds out about ben and catherine. that, combined with the miserable scene that leland and catherine create here and the absurd cruelty of it all, is a pretty good reason to cry

I just watched this show for the first time a couple months ago, and it became repetitive enough for me to develop a drinking game out of it before the first season ended. Is a character having affair/betraying another character? Take a drink. Is Audrey being blatantly sexualized? Take a drink. Is Cooper recording a memo to Diane? Take a drink. And my favorite: is Leland Palmer having a complete mental breakdown? Take a drink. Of course, once I got to the reveal in season two, I realized how fucking accurate that last one was 😂😂😂

This isn't hard to understand, the crazy dancing is like a foretelling of Leland being possessed(spoiler). Audrey provides an instinctive reaction on behalf of the viewers to the dancing, sensing it to be abnormal. The music and the situation create ambiguity, the veneer of happy swing music and the reality of deep disturbance.
