Barkha wanted to interview and then honor Mr Arunachalam Muruganantham with an award, without even knowing his name properly. Is it that hard to say his name? I am a bengali and can say that name in one go. I have learnt german words even tougher and longer than that. Its disrespectful to keep mentioning him as Padman Padman. He shud be known for his own name and name alone.

I have been a fan of Barkha, but it's sad to see that she still is not as educated and still needs to learn some basic manners and build on her cultural capital. She almost pushes the woman to speak openly about the topic and then she treats them so down. First, she asks them to come on stage in a very bossy manner. Then she treats them so down, not standing and saying thank you to them leave them in an awkward situation and then snatch the mike from them while she still is setting. The woman who is a sex-educator is a hero of this time. Her story was wonderful, very touching, fascinating and very full of awareness. "A person is known for his little deeds" a person's true character is revealed by thses small things that they are not aware of and here is clear that why she is doing these shows.

Barkha. I, never had any opinions regarding you though I do know ppl generally harbour dislike towards you. After watching this video I understand why. You have to learn to behave respectfully to others. The stage is not the place to find out if your panel member is called 'muruga' or 'murgi '. You had to do your homework prior. You are an Indian. Not Irish or French. Saying Mr. Muruganantham is not difficult to pronounce. I am a professor at a medical college and let me tell.. I have seen my 18 year old students with no experience at public speaking speak more respectfully to ppl. If calling his name was so difficult you could have just said 'sir'. Very sad at how you mistreated him and didn't let him speak enough. I was here to watch him speak and not you. I respect him more than you

" We know it's a natural thing and it' s not something to be ashamed of. Don't have a period leave, when we Don't feel good, we have to take a paracetamol, that' s a painkiller, doesn' t help for the moodswings Though. But I 'm pretty sure no man in Holland will do wear a pad and do the things this man have done. I think he' s very great and deserves a lot of respect! I would have liked it, when mr padman could have said more during this show. Because he 's done a lot!

I think the show hasn't accomplished it's objectives but I laud them for atleast making a start. And Barkha: show the man a little bit of respect.. calling him Murga and Murgi is insulting. He is Murugunantham.

I disagree. Many English speaking elite families of India follow all the same taboos with periods - making girls feel embarrassed about touching anything in household or doing anything god related when on periods. This topic is universal and definitely needed to be discussed with all classes in India including poor and elites both. Also, it’s the elites and middle class folks who are going to make a difference by volunteering time and money doing social work and charity to help the poor with such causes especially now that awareness is being raised by such good forums.

Shame on us to be pretending to be protective of women in our families but not even thinking what they go through and to have a discussion with finance minister regarding the budget issues, huge respect to you. India is emerging because here is a high school dropout who understands economics in a long run better than the people who are responsible for developing and improving GDP of a country who’s population is the second largest in the world. I also appreciate the English language being spoken so perfectly. All women of India should visit America to learn comfort and freedom to speak openly about their cycles. We haven't shame nor embarrassment over our periods. We recognize the fact that without our cycles there'd be no reproduction...we've got the power and ALL women should be proud! ❤🇺🇸💕 Almost forgot...I absolutely loved the movie, "Pad Man!" Why Barkha Dutt will not allow someone to speak. She called someone to stage and that lady was telling such an important story about the real ground situation there. She didnt allow that lady to complete also. She called some Army woman and showed her crying. What is this ? Isnt it an insult to call someone on stage and not allow them to talk and instead ignore them and call someone else. How insensitive. She cant even respect the man who is doing so much for women. She is calling him names like Murga etc...instead of his real name MURUGA (short for Muruganantham). Be humble and learn from people Madam. Please.

First, MUST admit that this is a GREAT contribution towards social change by Arunachalam. Also, glad that Twinkle Khanna has taken it upon herself to publicize the good work by Arunachalam. And, truly this is not just a story of sanitary napkins but also raises a whole lot of issues surrounding how Indians (especially, Hindus) view menstruation and menstrual blood. On this point, I would like to add just one correction to the comment by Twinkle Khanna that menstruation and menstrual blood has always been regarded impure and inauspicious. True, up to a point - for thousands of years that has been the case. However, go further back and you will find that menstrual blood was considered auspicious and represented the power of human fertility. Different cultures celebrated menstruation and menstrual blood differently, but celebrate they all did! In some cultures women would go and throw themselves into the sowing fields with the belief that their own fertility powers would be transferred to the land and, as a result, the land would deliver a bounty. A version of this ritual is still seen amongst the Bhils in India. Before sowing the fields they will set up a stone and smeer it with vermilion. Vermilion, here, represents menstrual blood. And, menstrual blood represents the POWER of FERTILITY. The Shiva lingam that is revered so much in Hinduism is a representation of the union of Shiva's linga and Durga's vagina. We all recognize the linga, but fail to recognize the part that 'collects' the milk poured on the linga! Yes, our swamijis will call it Cosmic or Celestial union. The origin, is more EARTHLY and rooted in fertility rites associated with early agriculture. Bengali Hindus may like to know that the simple sign painted with vermilion on the Durga Puja "Purna Ghata" is that of a new born baby. Yes, vermilion, symbol of menstrual blood is used to paint this on the Ghata, which itself represents the womb of a woman. (There are more details about it that is best left to the curious to follow up in Prof. Devi Prasad Chattopadhyaya's LOKAYATA and Abanindranath Tagore's 'Vratas of Bengal'.) This was prior to the rise of patriarchy. This was the age of early agriculture (pre-Iron age), when agriculture could be carried out with sticks and stones in the soft fertile river valleys. Thus, we find the celebration of the female vagina, celebration of menstrual blood, power of fertility across multiple cultures in Africa and Europe (prior to the rise of Bible and Vedanta, the 2 MOST POWERFUL TOOLS OF PATRIARCHY). This story about PADMAN Arunachalam is a GREAT BEGINNING. It is time women in India took back their power and prestige in society instead of being victimized throughout from womb to grave.
@viswaghosh1
@viswaghosh1 6 жыл бұрын
On the topic of 'period leave'... This may surprise many Indians and definitely Corporate India: Japanese corporations have a default one-day leave per month for all women employees - separate from the usual paid leaves for all employees. And, there the women don't feel ashamed of mentioning 'period leave'. Nothing to hide! Nothing to be ashamed of! The issue in India is, of course, worse. Even if the organized adopts a symbolic 'period leave' for female personnel, what about the unorganized sector!? Thats where things are much worse!

Most Indian sanitary pads manufacturers don't come under GST bracket as their revenue come under 20lakhs. And Govt provides free sanitary pads to most rural villages in anganwadis. If we remove Tax on all sanitary pads then Indian small scale manufacturers will loose out everything & become jobless, they will loose out on competition to BIG industries & Chinese imports. Its intelligent economics to sustain indian small scale jobs. Not an emotional decision.

Each women is different , if you think that period days must be not be off days , it's your opinion . Now just , Because you were being told you'd off your campaign , it's not your call.. Listen to the Army girl --- Hats off . She did a wonderful job of explaining this .

It would have been respectful to learn the name of the guest of honour. If white-people at Harvard and Princeton can learn and pronounce ARUNACHALAM MURUGANANTHAM, so can Ms.Dutt.

Hats off to Mr Murgan. I completely agree to the fact that to see India as a developed country we first need to respect and empower our women. Waiting eagerly for Padman release.

Muruga is the quintessence of the word: 'Chivalry'! I am sad to see how an ancient way of life, with noble intention got horribly twisted in the middle-modern times and NOW, is being asked to be completely routed out! It is inhuman to treat woman poorly during her periods - in fact, we must make sure they are well fed and well rested and have their own time. Read the nice article below: mythrispeaks.wordpress.com/2014/03/26/menstrual-taboos-and-ancient-wisdom/

Burkha is annoying and so disrespectful to those women who stood up to share their stories.. she didn't even thank woman who supplied under wears to 1k girls ofcourse coz movie was not on her. She wouldn't have cared for army officer if she wasn't in uniform. Literally snatching the mic from everybody. Muruga was not even important ..her jokes and Twinkle was

To be fair, the kavach lady used the platform meant for Padman. That said, Barkha appears to lack gentle probing techniques in order to get more out of Padman. After all, it is HIS story, and not Akshay Kumar's or Twinkle's. So it should be about HIM

I agree that the lady went over her time, but the platform was open to share their experience. What good is a pad when the girls don’t have an underwear. It undermines the movement itself to a certain degree. Yes, the story was about PadMan but she was focused on Twinkle and Akshaye with her cheap jokes and her other corny remarks. But all in all I’m glad that this took place to bring awareness and be more open about the problem.

In padman movie there's a line.. Men don't look good when crying.....why it's like that in our society that the man will be only man ( Strengthful) when he hides his tears 😢 why being emotional is considered the great enemy for men. ? He is also a human being. 🙏 :

There is this guy who wants to change India , and there's this lady who is interested in her programme TRP. Does not let him complete the sentence , he has only approach these programs so that many people can benefit . How many people are not watching this programme or people who do not understand English . Mr.Arnachalam Murugananthan please do your social work without these program , they do to help you , only interested in their program TRP. Being honest.
